Chapter 69: Witnessing Romance Novel Readers’ Favorites Scenes
But, Leslie didn’t let herself be discouraged for too long. She comforted her troubled mind by reminding herself of Calix’s willingness to listen to her stories, no matter how nonsensical they sounded.
It began when Leslie introduced herself as the soul of Calix’s newly wedded wife.
Despite being shocked by her proclamation, he still treated her well from the beginning. He even worried about her mealtimes.
Calix also listened when Leslie brought up her request to look for Calliope. Once again he was surprised, especially when she admitted that she couldn’t tell everything to him yet.
But, he promised to assist her in the end. He also didn’t pressure her to expose her secrets.
Thus, Leslie chased her fear away. Calix said they should have a conversation later. She anticipated that, wondering what he might have in mind.
"I should go see everyone too," whispered Leslie to herself.
Moving away from the spot where she hovered, Leslie quietly entered the hotel room. She saw Calix talking to Xander. The male lead’s face still had traces of being drunk but, he had regained his alertness.
As for the female lead, Violet was still unconscious. Laying on the bed, her body was covered with a thick blanket. Her teary-eyed assistant wiped her forehead with a damp towel.
Davin and the doctor stood on the opposite side. Their expressions were grim. Even though Violet was saved before the irrevocable happened, the situation was still dire.
The longer Violet stayed unconscious, the stifler the air turned. Xander was so close to marching to the room next door, desperate to unleash his wrath on Monica and Alex.
It took every fiber of Davin and the doctor’s beings to stop the infuriated Xander. Fortunately, Calix came with his shield to protect them from the furious CEO Qin.
"Xander, don’t act blindly. Since we’ve caught the perpetrator and her accomplice, you can focus on Violet first. Deal with them later."
Calix’s voice was less stern than during the time he interrogated Monica and Alex just now. He patted Xander’s back a few times, his gaze expressing his concern.
Leslie raised her brows, thinking that Calix was indeed a good friend and supporting character for Xander. No wonder they stayed friends until their adulthood.
The enraged male lead was still caught in the heat of the moment. If he acted now, Monica and Alex’s fates might turn even worse.
"Are you sure they’re bound well?" Xander frowned, ferocity glowering in his darkened eyes, "Hah! I’ll make sure they regret living. Who told them to mess with my woman?"
Leslie pursed her lips, refraining from laughing during this intense situation.
Xander’s last two sentences mirrored the ones muttered by the male leads in the other romance books.
Leslie didn’t expect that she would hear swoon-worthy yet cringy lines herself. As a transmigrator, she got to witness most readers’ favorite scenes.
Wasn’t this a good thing?
Calix was irked. If he didn’t think of tarnishing his friend’s image, he would smack Xander on the back right now.
"They can’t. Don’t worry ah," Calix pressed his palm on Xander’s back, resorting to pressing his fingers like massaging, "Now, stop thinking too much. Focus on Violet. I don’t care what you’ll do to them but, do it when I’m out of here."
"You’re leaving now?" Xander slapped Calix’s hand away.
"It’s midnight. I’m sleepy," Calix shrugged, smiling nonchalantly, "You have your people here. I’ll tell mine to retreat. See you later, man."
"..."
Xander watched Calix heading to the door. His friend remained with his carefree attitude.
"Thanks, Calix."
Calix didn’t look back. He simply waved his right hand. His gaze briefly landed on Leslie, faintly smiling at her.
Before leaving the hotel, Calix notified his bodyguards to leave the situation in the hands of Xander’s people. Then, he and Leslie returned to the car.
"Sigh... not a relaxing weekend night at all," Calix muttered as he buckled the seatbelt, "For sure, that Tang actress and the Guan boy won’t survive Xander’s wrath. They have to pay for their idiocy."
Leslie wanted to say something but, held herself back. After pondering some more, she quietly asked, "Violet... the victim, she’ll be alright, en?"
Leslie couldn’t help but wonder if Violet was not simply being drunk. If Monica laced her drinks with drugs...
"She’s okay, thank goodness. The doctor said she’s only drunk. But, the bodyguards found drugs in the man’s possession."
Leslie blinked, out of words.
If Alex used that drug on Violet... Xander would be unstoppable. That foolish young man might be thrown into shark-infested water.
Calix chuckled. He roughly guessed what Leslie was thinking about. Her thoughts were clearly written on her countenance.
"Haha, let’s go now," Calix slowly reversed the car out of the parking lot, "It’s getting late."
"...okay."
The clock pointed to one in the morning. The streets were still bustling with cars but, not as much as the day. The city’s neon nightscape glimmered in the dark.
Neither Calix nor Leslie talked. Only the voice of the midnight radio deejay filled the silence inside the car. He was talking to the callers who shared their concerns with him.
"...? Calix, are you stopping here?"
Leslie’s attention was shifted from the deejay when Calix slowed down the speed. Eventually, he pulled up by the roadside. The other vehicles sped past them, leaving dust in their wake.
"Don’t you think the scenery is pretty?"
Calix threw a question to Leslie instead of answering hers.
"...huh?"
Grinning, Calix pressed a button on the dashboard screen. The sound of something moving above startled Leslie.
Looking up, the panel of the sunroof slid back, revealing the view of the night sky and...
"Oh?"
Pink petals of peach blossom flowers gently fell into the car through the sunroof. Leslie put her hands facing upward, letting the petals land on her palms. Her eyes twinkled.
"It’s pretty," Leslie’s countenance brightened up, marveling at the simple gesture, "Hehe, I didn’t notice there are peach blossom trees here."
Calix entered the area where peach blossom trees were planted on both sides of the roads. The petals and leaves swayed gently in the night breeze, painting a beautiful photo of the night.
"I want to thank you and... apologize."
Calix’s mellow voice pulled Leslie from her trance. Turning to look at him, her gaze met his. A hint of guilt tainted his eyes.
Leslie clasped her hands, letting the petals wrinkle in her palms. Lips curling up, she gently asked, "What for? Because I told you about what might happen to Violet?"
"Yes," Calix nodded, "If not for you, we won’t know about this until... it’s too late. Anything could happen to Violet."
If Monica achieved her aim, nothing could stop Xander anymore. He wouldn’t simply ban her from the entertainment industry.
Calix sounded so earnest, tickling a part of Leslie’s heart. Her countenance softened like the peach blossom petals.
"I should thank you, Calix. You listened to me. You could have treated my story as nonsense, but, you didn’t. So, don’t apologize."
Always.
They had only known each other for a few days but, Leslie felt comfortable interacting with Calix. She was glad to meet such a kind man when she was thrown into this unfamiliar world.
Calix pursed his lips, his brows slightly furrowing as he caught the faint loneliness from Leslie’s tone.
