Chapter 62: The Pastries Did Their Job to Sweeten Her Mood

The traffic on Friday morning was slow but, Calix was not in a hurry. Turning on the radio, he let the newly released spring pop songs blare in the car.

Leslie’s lips curled up, enjoying the upbeat tune of the songs. All of the songs were unfamiliar to her but, they reminded Leslie of her favorites from her world.

’I miss my go-to songs ah. Seems like I need to forget about listening to them again. Better I find new favorites here.’

While Leslie’s heart danced to the tempo, Calix’s was in disarray. Cold sweat broke on his back as shivers traveled his whole body.

He suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to tell her something extremely important!

What to do?

What should he do?

If he brought it now, wouldn’t she get mad at him?

But!

He needed to tell her before they got home!

Please... don’t let him get strangled by his ghost wife on this wonderful Friday morning. He specifically didn’t go to work today to enjoy the brilliant spring day.

As Calix was panicking inside, an idea struck his mind. He saw a glimmer of hope even for a moment. Despite doubting its effectiveness, he had no other way.

No matter what, he had to try it.

Perhaps, Leslie wouldn’t be as angry as he initially thought.

Having decided on that, Calix slowed down as the car entered a familiar commercial district. This place was not far from Xu International.

"En? Why are we stopping?" asked Leslie once she noticed Calix pulled up next to a roadside.

Calix grinned, trying to mask his guilt. He pointed out somewhere along the streets, "I’m getting something. Wait here for a moment."

"Okay."

Leslie watched Calix get out of the car before he hurriedly entered a shop. It was a bakery named Thyme’s Up. The inside was occupied by patrons getting their sweet treats.

’Is he looking for strawberry cakes?’

Leslie chuckled, thinking back to Calix’s confession about his love for strawberries. It seemed like he really brought strawberry-flavored candies wherever he went.

Not long after, Calix reappeared with a brown paper bag and a cup of hot drink. Once he returned to his seat, he handed the bag and cup to Leslie.

"For you. Aren’t you hungry?"

Leslie was amused. She took the items from Calix’s hands.

The sweet fragrance of butter, sugar and cinnamon wafted in the air once Leslie opened the paper bag. A few pastries were placed inside.

"Thank you, CEO Xu."

Smiling, Leslie looked at Calix. She raised her brows when she saw something was wrong with the man’s expression. He hadn’t started driving again.

"Hey, why do you look like that? Scared of something?"

The confidence Calix showed when he tormented Geoffrey and Deena earlier vanished, replaced by a look of hesitation and... was it guilt too?

"Haha..." Calix laughed awkwardly. He tried to look away from Leslie’s prying eyes but, his gaze kept returning to her face, "I forgot... to tell you something. Can you promise to get mad at me less... in return for those pastries and coffee?"

Leslie was speechless. She stared at Calix in incredulity, wondering what was wrong with his head suddenly.

"...what have you done to sound so serious?"

Calix clammed his mouth shut, racking his brain on how to bring up the news to Leslie. They would arrive at Mapleview Hills soon.

If he didn’t speak about this matter soon...

Calix shuddered. He couldn’t help but picture Leslie transforming into a vengeful ghost.

"W-well... do you remember what we talked about... the morning[1] before I went to work? When... Aunt Wendy wanted to discuss... taking care of you?"

Leslie froze. Her mind immediately jolted the memory awake, reminding her of the awkward moment.

Aunt Wendy wondered if she should take care of Leslie who was lying comatose on the bed because there were no exclusive caretakers. This included maintaining her body hygiene.

Which meant...

"Y-you! Ah! I forgot about it!"

Leslie abruptly covered her face with the paper bag. She had forgotten about it!

How could she not think about it at all? She followed Calix to stay at the Xu family’s ancestral home, went to the company and then spent the night at the Li family’s ancestral home.

Only Leslie’s soul followed him, not Charlene’s comatose body! It remained motionless on the bed!

Calix coughed. He turned his head the other way, randomly looking outside the window. The tips of his ears turned red.

"I forgot... my grandma arranged two private nurses... to take care of you. She nagged at me because... I didn’t quickly find them."

"..."

Leslie’s red cheeks almost burst. She couldn’t imagine she was talking about this topic with Calix.

This was so shameful!

An awkward and suffocating silence drowned the cheeriness of the pop songs. Leslie and CEO Xu were immersed in their embarrassment.

Having no choice, Leslie quickly called Mimo. She wanted to clarify this matter as soon as possible!

’Mimo! Why don’t you tell me there are people taking care of me? Even... undressing me?!’

|Eh? Did I have to tell you? Sorry ah, Leslie. I didn’t know.|

"..."

Leslie didn’t have the heart to get mad at Mimo. The fox toy’s childlike voice sounded so innocent.

’Forget it. It’s my bad. I’m heading back now. See you soon.’

|Yes, yes! Come back quickly, Leslie!|

Exhaling a sigh, Leslie shook her head. Helplessness washed over her heart.

There was nothing wrong with Old Madam Xu’s arrangement. The matriarch was simply expressing her concern toward her new granddaughter-in-law.

"It’s fine... it’s not like we can dodge this subject forever," Leslie spoke quietly, breaking the silence, "Aunt Wendy, your grandmother... everyone will think it’s weird if I don’t have caretakers."

Calix and the Xu family were more than capable in hiring private nurses to take care of the comatose Charlene. Thus, this was unavoidable.

She better get used to the idea as soon as possible.

"...I’ll tell them not to stay at night. At least... you can feel a bit free," replied Calix, still not looking at Leslie.

"That’s good enough," Leslie let out hollow laughter, "Thank you."

"You’re welcome. W-well... eat those pastries ah. Good food will lift your mood. Don’t think too much about it."

Leslie couldn’t help but laugh more. Shaking her head, she grabbed one of the flaky and buttery pastries. Parting her lips, she took a bite. Sweetness spread in her mouth.

"Strawberry and cream cheese fillings? It’s tasty."

Calix grinned. He pushed the lingering awkwardness away. Staring at Leslie, he boasted, "This bakery has the best strawberry pastries and cakes. I always get some from here."

"Do you mean, Edward gets them for you?" Leslie raised her brows. She took another bite of the puff pastry.

"Hehe, he’s multi-talented."

Leslie snorted, "Don’t you mean you use him to run even the non-important errands for you?"

Calix guffawed at Leslie’s remarks. Shrugging, he replied, "He knows what’s coming for him ah. Does he think it’s easy to be my assistant?"

Leslie snickered, feeling sorry for Edward despite not knowing him so much.

Calix continued driving. Relief washed away his initial worries.

Hehe, she didn’t get mad for long ah.

The pastries did their job to sweeten her mood.
