Chapter 61: Brother-in-law, Do You Really Love My Sister?

"You should be thankful ah. You have this Young Master Xu sending you to school this morning. Aren’t you grateful?"

Calix glanced at Irene who sat on the front passenger seat. The girl burst out laughing in glee. The merry echoes resonated in the car.

"Hehe, thank you, Brother-in-law. I’ll surely boast to my friends."

Rowan and Bianca were not the only ones shocked when Calix said he would send Irene to school. Old Madam Li and Deena also were not exempted. Their jaws almost rolled to the floor.

"C-Calix... are you sure? You don’t have to trouble yourself, you know."

"It’s fine, Father. Now, Irene is my little sister too. I’m sure Charlene wants me to have a good relationship with her."

Calix smoothly eased Rowan’s doubts. He promised to drive Irene safely to school. Under his persuasion, Rowan and Bianca finally agreed. Shortly after, the high school girl found her way inside the former’s car.

Leslie quietly looked at Calix and Irene from the backseat. She wondered if Charlene’s younger sister had something to say to her new brother-in-law.

’This should be her first time talking to Calix, isn’t it?’

Irene was generally a quiet girl. Because of her sickness, she used to miss more than half of the school year, leading Irene to not have many friends from elementary to middle school.

Irene had just entered the first year of high school at Blossom Jade High this year. It was a private high school near Jadeite Peak, mostly attended by the children of the wealthy.

Being sick didn’t mean Irene’s grades were bad. She was placed in the special class due to her intelligence. She excelled in the difficult entrance exam.

"Brother-in-law," Irene turned her head, looking at Calix with a pair of inquisitive eyes, "Do you really love my sister?"

Calix almost choked. He didn’t expect to be questioned like that by a girl almost two decades his junior.

"Y-you...why do you ask about that?"

Calix quickly regained his composure, unwilling to show how shaken he was by the unpredictable question. He didn’t notice that Leslie was also shocked by Irene’s inquiry.

"I always wish that my sister would meet a good man," Irene withdrew her gaze from Calix. Her round eyes were focused on the road ahead of the car, "So, I hope that you’ll treat her well."

Calix was speechless. Leslie also was robbed of her words.

Unaware that she caused some awkwardness, Irene continued talking. She softened her tone more than usual.

"Big Sister isn’t happy at home, I know that. Our parents usually pay more attention to me because I’m sick. But, Big Sister mostly only has herself."

Even though Irene was significantly younger than Leslie, her observant nature made her notice how huge the gap in treatment was between her elder sister and her cousin Gladys.

Her elder sister often smiled happily in front of Irene yet, she perceived sadness and loneliness coming from the former. It was similar to the sick children she always crossed paths with in the hospital.

Irene’s words pricked into Calix’s conscience, all because his intention to marry Leslie was with ulterior motives.

Despite treating her like a friend, Calix was still aware of his actions.

Trying to ignore the discomfort tugging his heart, Calix tried to sound as normal as usual when he started responding to Irene. He unconsciously tapped one finger on the steering wheel.

"Your sister will be happier from now. I’ll treat her well. About your sister’s condition now, don’t worry. She’ll wake up soon. You believe that, don’t you?"

Irene blinked. A gloss layered her eyes before they slightly reddened. Nodding, she hummed.

"Yes."

Calix smiled in helplessness, thinking how Irene was cuter than his own younger sister.

Evelyn was the type to kick her brothers’ legs. But, she stopped doing that to their ex-military of elder brother. Her sole target now was Calix, much to his dismay.

Soon, Calix and Irene reached Blossom Jade High. At eight, many cars lined up to drop the students off. Due to its prestigious status as a private school, only expensive vehicles could be seen there.

After getting out of the cars, the student either waited for their friends or immediately walked to the gate.

Two security guards handled the main entrance. They were skilled in combats and other martial arts, befitting their roles in guarding the private high school.

"When will the bell ring?" asked Calix slightly curious.

He slowed down before carefully parking the car not far from the main gate. The school didn’t allow the parents to drive inside unless in the case of an emergency.

"8:15 here," Irene unbuckled the seatbelt. She turned to face Calix and said politely, "Brother-in-law, thank you for sending me to school."

Irene was just trying her luck. She actually didn’t expect to have her request easily granted by Calix.

"Study well," Calix took out something from the small storage next to him, "If you get excellent grades, your brother-in-law here will treat you to good food, understand?"

"Hehe, okay. I’ll go now."

Before Irene could open the door, Calix stopped her. He handed the high school girl a card black in color. Silver letterings were printed on it.

"Call me if you need anything. If you ever come to my company, show this card to the receptionist."

Irene was stunned. She dazedly asked, "Is this okay? Brother-in-law, we don’t know each other much. What if I sold this card to someone else?"

Calix burst out laughing, "I’ll catch that person then. Never mind ah, you’re already my little sister. Your sister surely wants me to treat you well too, isn’t it?"

Irene’s expression brightened "I’ll brag about it to my friends. Who knows, we’ll get you to treat us."

Irene happily stepped out of the car. She needed to round the car to get to the main gate.

Calix wound down the car window, exposing his handsome face to the high school students. He waved one hand at Irene. She happily returned the same gesture.

"Thank you, Brother-in-law."

"See you again."

Irene nodded. Turning around, she ran to a group of students nearby. They seemed like her friends at school.

Calix laughed when he saw the students looking in his direction. He rolled the window up again.

"They are surely talking about me, huh?" murmured Calix.

"CEO Xu, you love attention, don’t you?" asked Leslie. She had moved from the backseat to the one next to Calix.

Her words prompted laughter out of Calix’s mouth. Still chuckling, he drove away from the high school.

"Leslie, your sister is a good girl," Calix glanced at Leslie, his lips curling up, "Seems like she cares so much about you."

Leslie smiled faintly, "Irene is always a good girl. She never makes trouble for me."

Irene genuinely wished to see her elder sister waking up again. If she knew another soul replaced her sister, sorrow would undoubtedly overwhelm her.

But...

There was nothing she could do anymore. Leslie sensed that she was getting more familiar with Charlene’s memories and life.

"Leslie, once you wake up, let’s bring your sister out together."

Calix’s words jolted Leslie awake from her short daze.

"...okay. I’m sure she’ll love that."

Calix hummed, hoping for that day to come soon.
