Chapter 555: SS5: Weaving Through the Cobblestone Street
The cool breeze in spring eventually turned warmer once summer arrived. As planned for months, Calix brought Leslie and Calliope to Rome, Italy for their honeymoon trip.
Back to the place where they used to have a trip before.
The family of three departed right after Calliope began her summer break. Calix successfully secured two weeks off work, thanks to Andrian’s willingness to cover for him.
They would stay in Rome for the first week before visiting Tuscany for the second one. The capital city and the region alike incited excitement from the family of three.
"That cloud look like a bear~"
"Mama, birds are flying! Look!"
"Ohhh! The sea is so big ah."
Calliope couldn’t stop chatting about all the things she saw during the flight. Her voice, generally upbeat, echoed in the lounge compartment.
Calliope had been staring out of the windows, happy to look at the endless blue sky, the rolling hills and eventually the vast ocean.
Calliope also enjoyed running around the private jet, and playing hide-and-seek with her parents. Most of the time, she played with Calix because Leslie was generally sleepy during the ride.
Despite the long flight, Calliope was well-adjusted. She slept in the bedroom when it was her usual bedtime and woke up once she was fully energized.
Calliope’s excitement soared once the private jet landed at the airport. The time was still early, barely around eight in the morning.
"Yayy! We’re here!"
The warm summer breeze of Italy greeted Calix, Leslie and Calliope. The husband and wife tried to hold the little dumpling back before she began running around in the unfamiliar place.
"We’ll go to the house where we’ll stay first," was what Calix told Calliope when the little dumpling asked when they could visit the city.
"Oh~ A house~"
As Logan drove the sedan from the airport, heading to the villa of their accommodation, they watched how Rome’s golden sunlight bathed the ancient city.
"Papa, look!" Calliope exclaimed, pressing her tiny hands against the window of the car, "The big round thing! How can it be so big ah?"
"That’s the Colosseum, my buttercup," Calix said with a smile, patting Calliope’s head before turning to Leslie, "Your mama and I have visited this place before."
"Ohhhh!" Calliope snapped her head toward Leslie, her eyes widening with awe, "Yes! Yes! Mama tell Poppy already."
That was so awesome!
How could she forget that?
Calliope remembered she wanted to see photos but, her mama and papa only showed pictures of Rome.
Oh!
There were only a few of Papa’s photos ah. None of Mama’s.
Calliope was confused as to why but, her mama said she was too shy to take photos at that time.
"It’s good that you remember," Leslie smiled, her eyes glinting mysteriously as she leaned closer to Calliope, "So, we’ll bring you to have fun here this time."
"Really?" Calliope clutched her hands together, her voice brimming with hope.
"Yes," Leslie winked playfully. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear as she spoke, "You’ll get to play and try new food."
"Aaa! Thank you, Mama and Papa!"
Calliope pounced on Leslie, eliciting laughter from her mama. Calix chuckled in helplessness, knowing full well how happy the little dumpling was with the idea of playing and eating.
Various kinds of gelato, fluffy pastries, pizzas and pasta; everything was Calliope’s favorite.
Soon, Logan pulled up at the villa. It was the same one Calix and Leslie stayed during their previous Rome trip.
Mr. Nucci gladly arranged the accommodation for their family in exchange for having a meal together once. He and his wife wished to meet Calix’s little family.
"We’ll go out after we take a nap," Calix reminded Calliope as he and Leslie showed where the little one would sleep, "Remember, you have to nap first, okay?"
"Okay~ Poppy and Mimo will nap well."
It didn’t take long for Calliope to drift into sleep. Despite how excited she was, the long flight and the change in the time zones had an effect on her small body.
"Are you too sleepy, my love?" asked Calix as he and Leslie lay on the bed. His wife’s eyes were barely open at this point.
"En... So sleepy," Leslie covered her mouth, mumbling drowsily, "Dunno why... I’m so sleepy these days."
Calix pursed his lips, recalling the few instances when Leslie suddenly dozed off. He wanted to check with Dr. Mo but, she insisted it was because she could be more tired in summer.
"Sleep," Calix leaned closer, gently stroking Leslie’s back, "I’ll wake you up later."
"En..."
Within no time, Leslie drifted to sleep. Her breathing turned softer, the rhythm of her heart steady.
True to Leslie and Calix’s words, they brought Calliope to explore the iconic landmarks in Rome. The first few days were spent venturing the city.
The little dumpling often darted ahead of her parents, her tiny sandals clapping against the ancient stones. Twirling her flowery dress, she would then wave her hands, calling them to come quickly.
"Mama, Papa, hurry!"
Calix and Leslie admitted Calliope was more energetic than usual, also infectious.
Calix had no problem keeping up with Calliope but, Leslie struggled a little. Still, she made sure to focus on their family time instead of how easily she could feel sleepy.
The family spent hours weaving through narrow cobblestone streets, savoring gelato and pastries as they visited the historical sites. They also hopped on the open-top double-decker bus when needed.
One of the family’s destinations was the Trevi Fountain.
Lifting Calliope onto his shoulders, Calix helped the little dumpling take a clear look at the magnificent fountain with thousands of years of history.
Tourists and locals alike filled in the area, including the path leading to the Spanish Steps. Fortunately, the weather was still bearable for them.
"Woww! Poppy throw coin there?"
Calix and Leslie exchanged laughter, amused to see Calliope’s eyes as glittery as the sparkle of the fountain’s water. She was still so active even after visiting so many places today.
"Make a wish, my darling," Leslie handed a coin to Calliope, "Before you throw the coin."
Leslie and Calix decided to let Calliope throw the coin as she liked. It might be a little hard if she tried doing so when facing her back to the fountain.
"Okay, Mama~"
Grabbing the coin from her mama, Calliope squeezed his eyes shut. Exclaiming out loud, she made her wish, "Poppy wish to come here with Mama and Papa again!"
Calliope flung her hand, tossing the coin into the fountain. Opening her eyes, she cheered once she saw the shiny coin hitting its target.
Calix glanced at Leslie, his eyes glinted with mischief. Leaning closer to her ear, he said, "Maybe, we’ll come here again with Poppy’s younger sibling."
Blinking, Leslie nudged Calix’s elbow, earning a hearty laughter from him. Her cheeks pinkened as she couldn’t help but recall how much more vigorous their nightlife was now.
Dr. Wang, their gynecologist, gave them the green light last month. Leslie was healthy enough to bear a child thus, she and Calix had been trying to conceive their second child.
Well... Maybe their next trip was indeed with Calliope’s younger sibling.
