Chapter 556: SS6: The Towering Cypress Trees
Calix, Leslie and Calliope ended their first week in Rome by having dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Nucci. The middle-aged couple invited them to their private home in the historic city.
Mr. and Mrs. Nucci communicated with Leslie through English while Calliope didn’t know much about their conversation. Calix and Leslie ever so patiently translated what was needed to their little child.
"Mrs. Nucci said I’m so lucky to have you and Poppy. She told me to bring you two to meet them often. Mr. Nucci said the same thing."
On their way back to the villa, Calix brought up what Mrs. Nucci told him before they left. A lovely shade of pink left a tint on Leslie’s cheeks, concealed by the warm glow of the passing lampposts.
"Well... they’re nice. I don’t mind meeting them again."
Leslie was telling the truth. Mr. and Mrs. Nucci’s warm personalities made her feel comfortable throughout dinner. They also treated Calliope well.
Holding one of Leslie’s hands, Calix gave her a gentle squeeze. She simply smiled at him.
On the next day, the family of three and their small entourage headed to Tuscany. They would spend another week there before heading back to the country.
Instead of traveling by helicopter or a private jet, Calix opted for a van ride. Even though the journey took around three hours, the time spent on the road trip would be worth it.
As always, Logan sat behind the wheel with one colleague, Ethan next to him.
"Oh? My buttercup looks so vogue with your new sunglasses," commented Calix once he saw Calliope wearing the light pink-rimmed wide sunglasses for children.
The little dumpling suddenly took out the sunglasses from her cute backpack once the van left the bustling streets of Rome. She sat comfortably in her child’s car seat.
Calliope grinned widely, showing her tiny teeth. Patting her chest, she exclaimed, "Poppy wanna matchy-matchy with Mama. Mama has sunglasses too."
"Yes, we’re matchy-matchy," Leslie replied with a smile, adjusting the sunglasses with the same rim color, "Papa’s sunglasses are different than ours ah."
"Yup, yup."
Calix darted his eyes from Leslie and Calliope, helpless laughter bubbling from his lips.
As Logan drove north from Rome to Tuscany, the family of three witnessed the landscape unfolding like a painting.
The emerald rolling hills stretched endlessly, dotted with summer flower fields swaying in the breeze. They also saw the vineyards from afar, blanketing the earth in neat rows.
"Papa, look! The trees so tall and sharp!" exclaimed Calliope as they approached closer toward Tuscany. Pressing her palms on the windows, her round eyes wandered to the outside.
"Those are cypress trees, buttercup," replied Calix with chuckles, his gaze went outside the van before returning to Calliope, "They’re the symbol of Tuscany."
The towering cypress trees lined the winding roads, standing tall and regal against the vast blue sky. The quaint stone farmhouses and medieval villages on hilltops added charm to the view.
"Oh~ Hello, Mr. Sheep. You have so many friends ah."
Calliope squealed in delight at a flock of sheep grazing in a meadow. Logan intentionally slowed the van, allowing the little dumpling to take a longer look at the herd.
"Mama, Mr. Sheep and... ah?" Calliope turned to Leslie, only to trail off, "Mama sleep again."
Calix also looked at Leslie whose eyes closed as she leaned in the chair, sleeping deeply. Pursing his lips, he lifted one hand, gently brushing the bangs on her forehead.
"Your mama is tired," Calix could only give Calliope that reason. Drawing his gaze from Leslie to the little dumpling, he smiled, "She’ll wake up soon. We’ll stop somewhere and find something to eat, en?"
"Hehe~ Okay!"
As Calliope once again fawned over the majestic view of the scenery outside, Calix glanced at the sleeping Leslie.
’Don’t tell me...’
Shaking his head, Calix decided to confirm his suspicions. They had been nagging at the back of his mind but, he convinced himself that he was simply being overthinking.
Soon, Logan stopped at a rest area. Leslie had already woken up before they arrived at the area. She was still drowsy but, better than before.
"Let’s take our break here," Calix put one arm over Leslie’s back, gently patting her shoulder, "We can stretch our legs and eat some snacks."
"Okay," Leslie nodded, simply agreeing with Calix.
As Logan and Ethan took a coffee break for themselves, Calix brought Leslie and Calliope to one of the small cafes in the rest area. They ordered some light snacks, including a gelato for the little dumpling.
"Sweetheart, wait here with Poppy," said Calix after taking a few sips of his coffee. He gestured at the rows of stores nearby, "I need to get something real quick."
"Okay," Leslie answered swiftly. She was enjoying a flaky and buttery pastry with chocolate cream inside.
Calix smiled sheepishly, thinking of what he wanted to do. Rising to his feet, he headed to the store areas. Leslie continued chatting with Calliope, not realizing the man disappeared inside a pharmacy.
Not long after, Calix returned with a small paper bag hidden in the pocket of his jacket. His heartbeat quickened as he thought of what he had just done earlier.
Tilting up her chin to look at Calix, Leslie arched her brows, "Did you get anything?"
"I just looked around," Calix grinned, hoping not to look guilty before Leslie, "Nothing interested much."
"Papa, come and eat," Calliope patted on the table, gesturing at the plates of pastries, "Everything so yummy~"
"Haha, alright," Calix chuckled. He was inwardly grateful because Leslie didn’t ask further questions.
Soon, they resumed their journey. Logan drove the family of three to a vineyard where they would stay in one of the villas for the week.
As Logan steered the car onto a narrow, winding road with rows of towering cypress trees on both sides, they could see the vineyards closer than earlier.
The dazzling sunlight bathed the landscape, highlighting clusters of ripening grapes and olive groves dotted the fields. Eventually, they saw a charming stone villa from a distance.
"Ladies," Calix glanced at Leslie and Calliope, his lips curling into a smile, "We’re here."
Their week in Tuscany began now!
