Chapter 539: It Might or Might Not Happen
Calix quietly stared at Xander, sensing the regret in every word he spoke about his breakup with Violet. The gentle lapping of water against the lake bank created a soothing yet melancholy backdrop.
Behind them, Calliope was still energetically playing with Ryken and Davin. Leslie remained the watcher as she enjoyed the apple cider and the leftover apple pie.
Xander’s voice had grown lower and softer, imbued with the weight of regrets toward the end of his relationship with Violet.
"A breakup... She wanted one, instead of just a temporary separation," Xander sighed deeply, clasping his hands together as he stared into the shimmering lake, "I have to agree. I’ve hurt her more times than I can count."
Calix found it hard to comfort Xander verbally. He awkwardly extended his hand, weakly patting his friend’s broad back.
Once again, Xander showed his weak side to him. Seeing it still surprised Calix despite having witnessed it before.
"I regret it, Calix," Xander admitted, his shivering voice breaking slightly, "I love her but, the way I have treated her before... wasn’t how a man should treat the lady he loves."
The realization came too late for Xander. Even when he was ready to show how better he could be, Violet was already too worn out to care.
Calix couldn’t imagine how painful the breakup was to Xander. Despite all, his friend indeed had a heart.
As Axel, he had never experienced the heartwrenching pain of a breakup because Leslie was the only lady he was in a relationship with—until now.
As Calix, or rather, as the one having the original Calix’s memories, he remembered how the man suffered from his breakup and betrayal caused by Aria Jiang.
The original Calix barely recovered when he crossed paths with Charlene as they were thrown into the mess, orchestrated by Nicholas Wu.
Pursing his lips, Calix’s features hardened under the fairy lights. Once again he patted Xander’s back, hoping to channel the man some comfort.
"Is there no chance for you to get back with her?" asked Calix, his voice a low hum in the quiet part of the lake.
Was this really the end?
Did the female lead really leave the male lead, and find another love in the future?
Was it really?
Xander blinked. Calix’s remark made him think of one of Violet’s last words before she left that night. When his heart was shattered, a faint glimmer of hope appeared.
"About that..." Xander paused, unsure how to tell Calix. After a moment of hesitation, he said quietly, "Violet... She said that..."
"Le Gardenia’s rooftop at night on 15th March next year."
Violet said if they wanted to reconcile even after six months of their breakup, they should head to the rooftop of Le Gardenia, the fine-dining restaurant where they had their first date.
If only one of them appeared there, the answer was obvious. The other party had moved on.
Xander’s next revelation surprised Calix but, in a good way. His lips broke into a huge grin as he smacked his friend’s back harder repeatedly.
Hey!
This was good news!
His friend still had hope ah!
Violet might say it was simply a possibility but, Calix assumed Xander had a high chance to get back to his female lead. Still, he knew that his friend had a lot of self-improvement to do.
"It’s fifty-fifty chances but, don’t give up easily ah. Use this period to make yourself better. Don’t just go brooding somewhere. I’ll smack your head if I knew you do that."
Weak laughter escaped Xander’s lips at Calix’s threat. He simply accepted it as his friend continued to slap his back. It was better than Calix smacking his head ah.
"Yeah, I’ll bother you whenever I have to," Xander shrugged, once again sighing heavily, "Aren’t you the best example here? Don’t be stingy ah. You have to teach me."
"Well~ Yours truly will surely teach you how to be a good man."
Xander rolled his eyes, refraining from elbowing Calix’s rib. Throwing his gaze to the lake, his heart felt less heavy after telling his friend about his personal problem.
The night ended with Xander returning to his usual self. After leaving the lake bank, he joined Ryken and Davin playing with Calliope. The little one’s energy was still high despite playing so much.
The three men left just before ten, promising to meet the family of three at this coming banquet. With around six to seven days left, the waiting was generally a short one.
Calix and Leslie retreated to their bedroom after their usual routine of tucking Calliope into bed. The bodyguards who were on night duty handled cleaning the lake area.
Of course, Calix spared no time telling Leslie about the current phase of Xander and Violet’s relationship. His wife also shared the same thoughts as him.
Violet and Xander most likely would return as lovebirds next year with a stronger bond between them.
"This deviates from the original storyline," Leslie muttered, her voice laden with sleepiness, "But, a much needed one."
After the arrest of Nicholas Wu, Mimo told Leslie that the world wouldn’t be bound to the original storyline anymore. What happened in the story might or might change in the future.
And, Violet was not without feelings. Xander practically coerced her into the relationship.
Despite eventually harboring feelings for him, she was still scarred by how their relationship began. This period of separation would allow both to heal and improve themselves.
Humming softly, Calix nodded once, "Xander has changed but, it’s still minimal to me. He better use these coming six months to show Violet that he’s no longer the same man he was before."
Changes didn’t come overnight. The male lead still had tons of things to do before emerging as the best version of himself.
Leslie had no other opinions as she wholeheartedly agreed with Calix.
Xander was overbearing to Violet but, Leslie was a little glad that he was not one of the jerk, scummy and trashy male leads who resorted to abusing and raping the female lead to control her.
Such a character should be a villain! Not a male lead! And, certainly not the man who the female lead ended up forgiving and getting back together with at the end of the story!
If Xander was one?
Hah!
Leslie herself would keep them apart!
"Well, I’ll knock more sense into him," Calix declared, thinking of setting Xander straight this time around, "For now, let’s sleep. Haaa... I’m so sleepy ah."
Chuckles slipped out from Leslie’s lips, feeling sheepish for how wild her thoughts were. She patted Calix’s chest gently, urging him to sleep.
"Good night, honey."
"Night, my sweetheart."
Once again, a peaceful night enveloped the pair of lovebirds.
