Chapter 538: Another Kind of Broody Mood?

The night deepened as the time went by.

The lake glimmered under the soft glow of the moon. As the cool autumn breeze swept through the backyard, its surface lapped gently, creating small ripples with tiny sparkles.

The tall tree near the lake stood silent and still, illuminated by the fairy lights that extended to the wooden deck. The lights cast a warm glow, contrasting with the silver sheen of the lake.

"Aiyahhh! Look! Poppy can kick!"

"Wow! Poppy is so great! You can be the next martial arts master!"

"Ryken... Don’t teach her something so dangerous ah."

Calliope’s laughter echoed in the background, followed by Ryken’s encouragement and Davin’s concerned remarks as the little dumpling demonstrated her punching and kicking.

Still sitting at the table, Leslie watched the scene with a soft smile. She wrapped her hands around a mug of warm apple cider.

As the others were relaxing and playing, Calix slowly trodded on the grass, heading toward the lake bank. His eyes fell on the back of Xander.

The man sat on a large, smooth rock next to the deck. Staring into the water, he seemed to be lost in thought. The moonlight framed his silhouette.

Calix slowed down once he reached the rocky area of the lake bank, both hands deep in his pockets, "Why are you so down ah? Are you in a melancholy drama now?"

Calix’s remarks earned helpless laughter from Xander. Tilting his chin up, he stared at his friend before gesturing at him to sit.

Calix wasted no time. He immediately lowered himself on the rock next to Xander, his eyes looking at his friend with curiosity.

Xander let out a scoff. Raising his hand, he struck a light punch on Calix’s arm. The latter returned a hit to his shoulder.

"What’s up? I know you’re usually broody but, you’re different ah tonight. Another higher level of broody mood?"

Trying to lighten up the mood, Calix joked about Xander’s usual brooding. The man stared at him, a faint smile hanging on his lips.

"I got dumped."

"...what?"

Xander’s remarks flung Calix’s eyes open, frozen in shock. The merriment from behind seemed to fade as the former’s words silenced the world around them.

"You... you got what? You... got dumped?"

Calix’s mouth opened and closed, too shocked to speak properly. His widened eyes remained on Xander whose expression showed a slight hint of sadness.

Xander got dumped?

Violet dumped him?

Really? But...

How could he be the male lead without his female lead[01]?

Abruptly shaking his head, Calix forced himself out of his daze. He was still flustered as he asked, "...what happened? When... when did she end things?"

Calix knew that Xander and Violet were on a break because of his friend’s bad behavior before. But... he never expected to hear the female lead dumped the male lead in the end!

Xander let out a sigh. Throwing his eyes back toward the lake, his mind recalled his last meeting with Violet two nights ago.

"She wanted to meet me so... I went to her. And, then..."

Under Calix’s curious and pitiful gaze, Xander slowly recounted the event that marked the end of his relationship with Violet. His low voice was carried by the breeze into the nothingness.

Two nights ago...

Xander emerged from the car, his heart beating rapidly at the thought of meeting Violet after so long. He stared at the glass greenhouse down the road.

The greenhouse was located in the middle of a flower garden, privately owned by Xander’s grandmother. Violet was among the ones on the short list of people being allowed there all the time.

Xander smoothened the lapels of his coat, sensing a mix of dread and excitement within him. He held back from running toward the greenhouse, afraid of frightening Violet.

’Is she still mad at me? Or... has she forgiven me? Still, I need to apologize.’

Xander’s footsteps echoed softly on the stone path leading to the greenhouse, his pulse quickening with each step. His eyes were locked onto the looming structure ahead, its glass walls glinting faintly under the moonlight.

Hesitating at the entrance, Xander paused before pushing the door open. The fragrance of blooming jasmine and roses lingered in the cool night air, welcoming his presence.

Xander took a step forward, his dark eyes scanning the area. He searched for Violet’s figure among the vibrant foliage and the sea of orchids.

There she was.

Violet stood near the fountain in the middle of the greenhouse, her silhouette delicate against the backdrop of the twinkling lights above. Her eyes also searched for him, being alerted by the door creaking.

She seemed calm, and... as if withdrawn. Seeing the look on her face stuck a lump in Xander’s throat.

Still, Xander forced himself to step forward. With every step he took, he never strayed his gaze from Violet’s eerily calm countenance.

Xander paused a few feet away from Violet. He couldn’t help think she was seizing him up. His throat felt dry but, he managed to smile faintly.

"Violet... how have you been? It’s been a while."

Xander’s voice, usually monotonous and steady, was evidently trembling with hope clinging to it.

"I’ve been fine," replied Violet, her voice low and steady yet distant, "And you?"

"I’ve missed you. Every day, Violet," Xander admitted, not guarding his honesty anymore.

Before, he usually refrained from being truthful about his feelings, even to her. He didn’t want to make the same mistake anymore.

Violet’s gaze softened for a fleeting moment, thinking her heart was the same. Smiling sadly, she began, her tone ckear, "Xander, I want to break up with you."

Those words hit Xander like a gust of wind, robbing him of his breath. Eye-wide in surprise, he stuttered, "W-what? Break up? Violet... I thought... I thought we’d end our separation..."

"I’ve been thinking," Violet interrupted gently, raising her palm to stop Xander, "We need time apart, not just a short break. A real separation, Xander."

Frozen, Xander frantically searched for any signs of lying on Violet’s face, still thinking that he heard her wrong.

Unfortunately...

She was telling him the truth.
