Chapter 537: A Feast of Autumn Delights
As expected, Calliope couldn’t stop talking about her trip to the theme park with Calix. The little dumpling recounted the entire event during dinner that night, the one joined by Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond as well.
"The cup spin spin and spin many times! But Poppy don’t get dizzy ah."
"The ice cream is yummy~ Poppy give Papa some."
"Oh! Poppy pet the rabbits, the goats and the chick. They are so cute~"
The little dumpling’s story amused the four adults, including her papa who spent the entire day at the theme park with her. All of them could tell how happy she was with the trip.
After dinner, Calliope proudly gifted Leslie, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond with the souvenirs. She giggled when she received praise in return.
"Poppy buy gifts for Great-Grandma, Grandma, Grandpa, Mia and everyone too~"
Calliope couldn’t wait to gift the others the souvenirs. Calix and Leslie promised to bring her to meet everyone soon—the anniversary banquet was closely approaching, this coming weekend.
Later that night, Leslie and Calix cuddled on the bed after tucking Calliope into bed. The little dumpling was so exhausted, she slept as soon as her little head hit the pillow.
Holding the snow globe in her hands, Leslie admired the tiny castle and the tea cups inside. She lightly shook the globe, watching the glitters float before slowly falling.
"I love this so much," Leslie smiled at Calix, her soft voice filling the quietness of the room, "Hehe, you said she chose the spinning cup ride first, right?"
"She did," Calix chuckled, evidently happy to recall the precious memory from this morning, "Poppy said we should go there again, with you next time."
Leslie’s smiling lips softened. Knowing that Calix and Calliope had her in mind when they were out having fun together touched her heart.
"Of course. I’d love to."
Leslie put the snow globe on the bookshelf before returning to Calix’s side. Huddling under the blanket, the husband and wife exchanged a loving smile.
"You’ve done so well, honey," whispered Leslie as she stroked Calix’s face gently, grazing her fingers on his skin, "Our darling daughter really enjoyed the first daddy-daughter date."
Leslie’s remarks earned soft laughter from Calix. Pulling her closer to him, he whispered in return, "More will come, my love. I think I better do it as a monthly tradition, maybe?"
"Hehe, I support you."
The husband and wife eventually drifted to sleep with smiles on their lips, their hearts filled with contentment for what life had to offer.
On the next day, Calix, Leslie and Calliope were busy setting up the table in the backyard. Their dinner plan with Xander, Davin and Ryken was scheduled for seven in the evening.
"Uncle Ryken will come? Yay!"
Calliope jumped on her toes as she imagined meeting Ryken for dinner later today. She still remembered how cool the man’s apartment was, full of unique and exotic items from his travels.
"You’ll get to meet your Uncle Davin too," Calix said as he placed the flower centerpiece on the dining table, "He’s my other childhood friend."
Calliope had only met Ryken and Xander so far, much to Davin’s jealousy. The latter was overjoyed when Calix suggested gathering at the manor for dinner this weekend.
Oh... her papa had another friend ah. Would he smile as much as her Uncle Ryken?
Calliope’s curiosity was answered later this evening.
The men arrived in one car instead of three. Ryken offered himself to be the driver, picking up Xander and Davin from their respective residences.
"Hello."
"Good evening."
"My dear Poppy!"
Ryken was the loudest and most cheerful among the three. He happily lifted Calliope and patted her head when she came running toward him.
Calix and Leslie followed Calliope from behind. They exchanged laughter seeing how quickly their daughter rushed to meet Ryken at the porch.
"Uncle Ryken! You’re here!"
"Hehe, I brought these two with us too."
Ryken introduced Xander and Davin to Calliope on Calix’s behalf. The little dumpling cleverly said she had met Xander before. She smiled at Davin, greeting him sweetly.
"She’s an angel," Davin exclaimed, clutching the space above his heart, "So well-behaved compared to my rascal nephews."
"Of course. Our daughter is an angel," Calix scoffed, shooting Davin a smug look, "Anyway, let’s go to the lake. The food is ready."
Leslie greeted Davin who she had never met before. The latter did the same in return. She couldn’t help but think this man was the calmest among these four friends.
Calix and Leslie led the others to the backyard. Calliope held hands with Ryken. She chatted animatedly about her trip to the theme park yesterday.
As they approached the backyard, the gentle breeze of early autumn rustled through the leaves, carrying the scent of the dishes.
A long wooden table was set below the tree, adorned with candles in glass jars and seasonal flowers. The lake offered a stunning view under the surrounding fairy lights, including on the wooden deck.
A feast of autumn delights was served on the table.
Perfectly seared with charred edges grilled steaks, and roasted vegetables gleamed in a honey glaze were among the dishes. Their earthy sweetness lingered in the air.
The creamy pumpkin soup was paired with freshly baked garlic bread. The comforting fragrance of the soup harmonized with the garlicky herbaceous scent of the loaf.
Sitting at the desk, Calix and Leslie hosted their guests well. Hearty chatter and laughter echoed from the table, the sound rising above the water lapping and the leaves rustling.
No one spoke about what happened at Vilux last weekend. Talking about Nicholas Wu was never the priority.
"Have some of this apple pie."
"Oh, do you want this pudding?"
Calix served the desserts after the main dish. Davin and Ryken helped themselves for some while Xander only picked the pudding. As always, Calliope had a hearty portion for both.
As Ryken and Calliope’s chatter dominated the table, Calix glanced at Xander. He couldn’t help but think something was quite off with his friend.
Did something bother the male lead?
