Chapter 530: Since When Did You Know?

A visitor?

Did someone really come to meet him?

Staring blankly at the guard, Nicholas’ brows furrowed. Doubt was evident on his face. He couldn’t think of anyone who might come to visit him.

Aside from the traitorous Mr. Tang and Mr. Duan, no one had visited Nicholas and Daniel after their arrest. Everyone acted as if they didn’t exist.

"Hey, come on," the guard shook the bars, "Get your ass up. I don’t have all day to wait for you."

Warily, Nicholas approached the cell door. It was better if he didn’t upset any of these prison guards.

"...who?" asked Nicholas, his voice a low murmur.

"See it for yourself," replied the guard monotonously, his expression remaining stoic.

Nicholas watched the guard unlock the cell door, pulling it open, the movement producing a screeching sound. The guard ordered him to step out with a tilt of his chin.

Nicholas dragged himself from the spot he was standing earlier, reluctantly following the guard’s order. Racking his brain over the visitor’s identity, his curiosity turned to dread.

Who was it?

Did Mr. Tang come again?

Once Nicholas was confined in the detention center, he heard nothing about his company. He also hadn’t bumped into Daniel who was also held here.

The guard led Nicholas down the sterile, gray hallway. The lamps dimly lit the interior of the eerily quiet detention center, save for the muffled chatters and distant clangs of metal doors.

The coarse fabric of the orange jumpsuit grazed uncomfortably on Nicholas’ skin as he moved. Dark clouds loomed over his head, reflecting his weary inside.

Nicholas stared at the visitors’ room as they neared the place. The guard motioned for him to enter, his frosty glare was enough to pressure the worn-out Nicholas to step inside with no questions asked.

"...?!"

The sight waited for Nicholas making his blood run cold.

Calix sat calmly on the other side of the plexiglass divider. Dressed impeccably in a tailored gray suit, his posture was relaxed as if he was not in a detention center’s visitors’ room.

This bastard?!

Nicholas’ eyes widened in disbelief. He stared at Calix whose aura of authority and control froze him immobile. The latter really looked out of place here.

Calix might seem calm on the surface but, his piercing gaze was enough to cut through Nicholas like a blade. One corner of his lips raised above the other, carving a smirk.

The atmosphere in the room was thickened by tension, an uncomfortable silence that seemed to stretch for an eternity.

Nicholas still stood unmoving, his lips slowly curled into a sneer. Once he spat his words out, they coated thickly with sizzling venom.

"CEO Xu, I never thought you’d visit me here. What an honor."

The image of a smirking Calix when the police brought him away from the hall was deeply ingrained in Nicholas’ mind. From that moment on he realized that he was fooled by his own game.

Calix, and most likely with Xander’s assistance, set him up. They purposely lured him and Daniel to the clubhouse under the pretext of a party.

Nicholas’ frosty and venomous remark unfazed Calix. Adjusting himself casually on the chair, he smiled at the man clad in the prison jumpsuit.

Without suspecting anything, they walked into the party hall like idiots.

"Uncle Nicholas," Calix stated, his voice calm and commanding, "Sit. We have a lot to catch up. Our last meeting was almost twenty years ago."

The way Calix addressed him was the telltale sign to Nicholas. This man indeed had learned his true identity as the deceased Old Master Xu’s bastard son—Calix’s half-uncle.

Despite bristling at the authority in Calix’s voice, Nicholas still complied by lowering himself into the chair.

The two men locked eyes, the glass divider did little to lessen the intensity of their exchange.

Calix silently guessed, thinking Nicholas would surely lunge at him if not for the divider.

"No need to honor me by calling me uncle. When did you know?" Nicholas began, his voice shaking with anger, "Since when?"

Nicholas wondered what he did wrong. He had painstakingly orchestrated this plan for years.

Benefiting the fact that the Xu family had forgotten about him, Nicholas hid his true identity and sacrificed so much to reach here.

Only to have his plan damned by this bastard!

Who did he think he was?

Just because he was the legitimate heir of the Xu family, he was given free rein to toy with him?

Nonsense!

Calix smiled faintly, "All thanks to my smart wife. She warned me that you’re suspicious."

"...what?"

Calix’s answer stunned Nicholas. Hearing that his plan went awry because of the former’s wife sounded like the stupidest joke he had ever heard.

"You don’t have to believe me if you can’t," Calix shrugged, his voice lacing with pride as he stated, "My wife just can sniff out bad guys near me, you know?"

"...you’re here to gloat, aren’t you? To laugh at me?"

Calix tilted his head slightly, still unbothered by Nicholas’ evident anger. He replied calmly, "Not really. I’m here to have a conversation."

"A conversation?"

Nicholas barked, his laughter humorless. Slamming his palms hard on the table, he shouted.

"Are you kidding me? After what you did to me? After your family destroyed my life?! Don’t show your fake concern to me!"

Calix quietly looked at the raging Nicholas on the other side of the glass divider. The man’s eyes reddened, his nostrils flaring by his wrath as his chest heaved up and down at a rapid rate.

Calix could roughly guess what pushed Nicholas to this thorny path of revenge. Having his existence denied by his own father, the man was the victim of the situation.

Nicholas was a helpless young boy when he was exiled to another country with his mother, the mistress. He was forcefully uprooted from his life here.

But...

His past didn’t excuse his actions.

Calix was also aware Nicholas chose wrongly by being hellbent on ruining the others’ lives. In this case, his family was also affected by the deceased Old Master Xu’s adultery.

In this timeline, the original Calix paid the price with his own life.

Even though he, Axel, knew he wouldn’t be reunited with Leslie if not for the former’s demise, what Nicholas did still robbed someone of his life.

"The person you should ruin has long been dead," Calix let out a sigh, his brows furrowing, "So, you decided to destroy the others. You might succeed if I remained oblivious to your plan."

Nicholas was crushed inside. Calix’s first remark hit him like a slap to his face.

Yes.

Yes!

He wanted to destroy the old man but, he was already dead! What else could he do aside from targeting his family?

They had to pay for his suffering!

"You think you’re untouchable! You think you can just walk in here and—"

Calix calmly said amidst Nicholas’ rage.

"I knew one more thing."

Calix’s voice pulled Nicholas’ attention from his rage-fueled mind. Narrowing his eyes, he stared at the former suspiciously.

Calix parted his lips, watching how Nicholas’ eyes flung open in surprise as he spoke.

"I knew you were behind my accident six years ago."
