Chapter 531: They Wouldn’t Ever Cross Paths Again
When Calix woke up this morning, his mood was somber as if dark clouds hanging above his head. His mind was preoccupied with the thought of meeting Nicholas.
The morning was bright with good weather but, his mood was far from his usual cheerful one. Watching his reflection in the mirror as he buttoned his shirt, he saw the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
"Honey, you’ll be fine."
Calix replied to Leslie’s soft encouragement with a tight hug. She returned with gentle strokes on his back, once again reminding him of her faith in him.
Despite preparing himself to meet Nicholas in the detention center, Calix couldn’t curb the uneasiness prodding in his heart. A mix of emotions was stirred within him.
Anger, determination and also a faint, reluctant pity for the man.
Calix understood the reasons driving Nicholas for revenge but, he wouldn’t ever justify the man’s heinous actions.
Even if Calix warned Nicholas not to mess with the Xu family, the snake-like man would just wait for another opportunity to strike again. He couldn’t risk it.
If Nicholas’ revenge succeeded, more lives would be ruined.
Nicholas’ company was in trouble from the night he and Daniel were arrested. Calix heard someone surnamed Tang currently led the operations.
No matter how much damage control Mr. Tang and his team did, they couldn’t avoid being investigated by the authorities. The involvement of the international police only worsened the issue for them.
"Are you sure you want to visit him? He doesn’t deserve anything from you."
Xander asked Calix twice about his decision to visit Nicholas. He remained firm with his plan, saying he should at least meet the man once.
In the end, Xander only told Calix to be careful and not to waver under Nicholas’ possible pleas.
Logan and a few other bodyguards accompanied Calix to the detention center. The place was on the outskirts of the city, taking close to two hours of ride through the expressways.
The contrast between the world outside and the grim structure of the center was stark.
The foreboding building loomed on the horizon, its cold gray walls were a harsh reminder of the torturous confinement waiting for its inmates.
Nicholas’ fate was as good as death. Depending on the court’s future judgment, he most likely would spend decades behind prison bars.
As Calix walked into the visitors’ room, led by a guard, he wondered what kind of emotions Nicholas would show him.
Sure enough, the man was beyond infuriated.
Nicholas would certainly attack him if the glass divider didn’t exist. The man only stopped shouting in rage once Calix dropped these words.
"I knew you were behind my accident six years ago."
Frozen mid-sentence, Nicholas’ mouth slightly open. His eyes widened, shock and fear flickering in them. For a moment, the time seemed to stop.
The accident from... six years ago?
He... he knew?
Nicholas’ face contorted between dread and surprise, a stark contrast to the calm and unyielding Calix. His heartbeat sped up, ramming heavily against his chest.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Nicholas finally said, his voice quieter now yet, imbuing with a defensive edge, "Accident? You want me to get into more trouble, don’t you?"
Nicholas pursed his lips, tightening them into a thin line. He willed himself not to waver in front of the composed Calix yet, the man’s piercing gaze saw through his facade.
Nicholas darted his eyes to the side. He unconsciously grasped the side of his pants, his knuckles turning white from the pressure.
How...
How did he know?
It happened years ago! Did he know from the start?
"You can lie all you want," Calix shrugged, looking unbothered by Nicholas’ denial, "I knew you planned the accident but, I don’t have the concrete evidence."
"..."
Returning his gaze to Calix, Nicholas was filled with more dread. Relief didn’t come to him even after the man said he didn’t have any solid proof.
Because...
This was enough to tell Nicholas that Calix learned of his brief return to the country six years ago.
Calix stared at Nicholas’ pale face. Sighing inwardly, he knew it was time for him to go. There was nothing else left to be spoken between them.
After thinking about it long and hard, Calix didn’t desire to pursue the past accident.
The punishment waiting for Nicholas couldn’t pay for the price of the original Calix losing his life. But, this also meant he could no longer harm other innocent people.
Rising to his feet, Calix smoothened the lower part of his jacket. His eyes remained on Nicholas whose dark circles and unkempt hair left no remnants of his previous pristine self.
"I’m leaving."
They wouldn’t ever cross paths again.
Turning on his heels, Calix strode toward the exit of the visitors’ room. He could feel the weight of Nicholas’ stare but, he no longer cared.
Calix wanted to apologize to the young Nicholas who inevitably became the victim of the situation, not to the adult Nicholas who strayed far from the right path.
"Wait... where are you going?"
Nicholas’ voice, albeit trembling slightly, echoed from behind yet, Calix didn’t cease walking.
"Wait! Don’t go yet! We haven’t done talking!"
"Calix Xu!"
Thud.
Nicholas’ shout was muffled once Calix closed the door. He nodded at the prison guard waiting outside before heading toward the main exit. His footsteps were steady on the cold floor of the detention center.
’It’s over.’
The oppressive weight of the foreboding building seemed to lift once Calix stepped out, once again seeing the bright sky of the early autumn.
’It’s truly over now.’
Letting out a sigh, Calix smiled faintly to himself. He adjusted his jacket, his expression unreadable under the sunlight.
Nicholas’ previous outburst still lingered in Calix’s mind but, his resolve wasn’t shaken. Taking a deep breath, he strode toward the van, his soles clicking against the pavement.
"Are we going home, Boss Xu?" asked Logan as Calix approached the van. His question was answered with a nod.
"Yes. Well, I’m skipping work today. Let’s go home."
"Yessir!"
The sun seemed to shine brighter as the van departed from the compound of the detention center, heading toward the horizon of a better future.
