Chapter 529: The Cold and Dark Cell

Chapter 529: The Cold and Dark Cell

Somewhere, in a dark and cold place.

Dragging himself by the feet, Nicholas slumped on the creaking cot of his detention center cell. His entire being was disheveled, now was a sad mockery of his former polished image.

"...loser! Get the hell out of here!"

"...haha! The fucker cry!"

"...lazy ah. Go and do it yourself."

The other inmates’ voices echoed from the other cells, being carried away by the damp and cold air.

The condition of the cell was harsh. The peeling gray wall had splotches of dirt clung to its surface from the lack of proper care.

Nicholas raised his hands, grabbing the sides of his head. The faint flicker of fluorescent light cast a dim glow on his figure.

From wearing a pristine suit, Nicholas was forced to change into the orange clothes of the detention center inmates. The harsh material was a far cry from the comfort of his suit.

A cold reminder of how he used to be before mingling with the elites.

A few days had passed since the humiliating night when Nicholas got captured. His mind reeled and his heart seethed every time he inevitably recalled the whirlwind of disgrace since his arrest.

The memory of being confined in the interrogation room a few days ago burned fresh in Nicholas’ mind. The space was dimly lit where two officers, including one from the international police, sat across from him.

Daniel wasn’t there. The police purposefully separated them from the moment they were thrown into the lockup cells.

On the first day of the interrogation, hours after Nicholas stayed overnight in the lockup...

"Why don’t we start with the offshore accounts?" asked one of the local officers, sliding a folder thick with evidence toward Nicholas.

The man, still wearing the suit from last night’s party, scoffed. Nicholas tried to maintain his composure. He didn’t bother looking at the file.

"I won’t talk until my lawyer is here."

As if he would admit to his wrongdoings. He also knew enough not to say anything without the presence of his attorney.

The officers glanced at one another. The one from the international police understood what Nicholas said, being fluent in multiple languages.

The officer continued asking, not bothering with Nicholas’ remark. Pointing to the file, he said, "Transfers from these accounts matched the payments made to your known associates. Care to clarify?"

Nicholas narrowed his eyes, displeasure leaking from his wrathful heart. His tone was lower as he responded, "As I’ve said, I won’t talk until my lawyer comes."

Nicholas’ insistence earned a scoff from the international police officer. Speaking fluently, he stated, "Your crimes date back a few years. Witnesses claimed you orchestrated Albert Martinez’s death almost six years ago."

Frozen, Nicholas’ blood turned cold. He locked his gaze onto the foreign officer, seeing the latter’s lips curling into a sneer.

"I don’t know who that man is," said Nicholas after a period of silence, his voice carrying the first crack of his composure. Then, he repeated for the nth time, "I won’t talk until my lawyer comes."

The foreign officer chuckled, clearly mocking Nicholas but, he said nothing else. He exchanged glances with the local officers.

"Alright. Let’s see who this lawyer is and when he will come," said the other local officer, his tone was light and airy as if he wasn’t trying to interrogate Nicholas.

The officer’s smirk was chilling but, Nicholas didn’t let it bother him. He kept waiting for his company lawyer to come, attempting to contact him many times, but...

When the lawyer, Mr. Duan appeared with the next-in-command of the company, Mr. Tang, Nicholas received no help from any of them.

"Mr. Wu, your crimes have severely affected the company! All the shareholders are angry!"

"I’m sorry, Mr. Wu. I can’t represent you."

Horrified by their betrayal, Nicholas lashed out. Mr. Tang hurriedly left, saying he had a press conference to attend. Mr. Duan followed suit but, not before giving a stern reminder.

"You’ve messed with someone you shouldn’t."

Enraged, Nicholas tried contacting other lawyers using the limited time of phone calling he was allowed to. Unfortunately, all of them rejected to be his representative.

There was only one reason why they collectively refused!

The damn Calix and Xander pressured them!

Those bastards used their influence to control the situation! They were still at it after humiliating him at the party!

Unwilling to bow down, Nicholas kept acting stubbornly by not answering during the interrogation. His composure gradually cracked as the officers tried different ways to pressure him.

"Mr. Wu, don’t insult our intelligence. We have enough evidence to hold you indefinitely," was what the officer said before transferring Nicholas from the lockup to the detention center.

’Damn!’

Gritting his lower lip, Nicholas still remembered how silent his ride to the detention center was, except for the rattling of the chains binding him to the seat.

The foreboding structure of gray concrete and barbed wire, the detention center.

Once Nicholas arrived at the detention center, all disheveled and exhausted, he received another round of humiliation. The officers flanked him, dragging him into a room.

"Remove your clothing. Everything."

One of the officers coldly ordered Nicholas, his cold gaze leaving no room for objections. He could only comply despite how unwilling he was.

The entire process stripped Nicholas of his remaining dignity. He hoped to at least keep the last piece of clothing, his boxer on when the checking continued but, the officer harshly barked at him.

Standing stark naked in the room, Nicholas swallowed back his humiliation and rage. The officers only let him go after declaring he was without any dangerous possessions.

"You’re now inmate 211805."

Instead of Nicholas, he was now reduced to a string of numbers.

How many days had passed?

He lost track of time already.

"211805! 211805! Do you hear me?"

Nicholas jolted out of his daze, abruptly turning to the bars of his cell. A guard stood there, rapping at the steel bars.

"Y-yes?"

Nicholas jumped to his feet. His face paled at the sight of the stern guard.

"211805, you have a visitor."
