Chapter 53: Did She Bully You Before?

It turned out that Butler Yang caught Sarah trying to clear the shattered glass pieces and reduce the intense sweet scent. He was mad because the young maid didn’t inform him of the incident right away.

"You have been working here for years! How could you ignore our procedure? You have to notify me if there’s a mishap happening immediately."

Sarah almost cried when being berated by Butler Yang. She kept bowing to him, Rowan and Bianca. Her face was a blotchy mess of tears.

"I’m sorry! I was panicked! I won’t do it again!"

Rowan and Bianca looked at each other for a while. They seemed dissatisfied but not as mad as Butler Yang. Irene remained quiet as she watched the scene.

At the same time, Leslie and Calix were still outside. They could perfectly see what was happening from the open door.

"Be more careful next time," Rowan reminded Sarah. His expression soured, "Even though our daughter doesn’t live here anymore, this is still her room."

"Yes. Sarah, you know that we rely on you, en?" Bianca chimed in. She gently pressed her husband’s right hand.

Sarah bowed deeply to Rowan and Bianca, almost shouting, "I will! I promise! Thank you, First Master and First Madam."

Butler Yang exhaled a sigh. He bowed at Rowan and Bianca, expressing his sorry, "I’ll train her better, First Master and First Madam. This thing won’t happen again."

"It’s fine. Don’t be too harsh on her," Bianca smiled faintly. Taking a pause, she looked around the room, "But... the scent is still too much. I think our son-in-law shouldn’t stay the night here."

Even though Sarah had cleaned the pool of perfume using a few cleaning supplies, it couldn’t entirely drown the fragrance. The scent was too intense, clinging to their clothes.

"I think the same too," Rowan shared the same sentiment as his wife. The floral scent of the perfume was too sickeningly sweet right now, "Calix has to sleep in the guestroom."

"I’ll immediately prepare one for Young Master Xu," said Butler Yang. In a guilty tone, he told Calix, "We’re sorry, Young Master Xu. It’ll inconvenience you if you stay in our First Young Miss’ bedroom."

Calix nodded. He didn’t intend to make it difficult for the poor butler.

"It’s fine. It’s inevitable."

"Thank you for understanding, Young Master Xu," Butler Yang smiled in relief, "We’ll prepare one for you as soon as possible."

Butler Yang and Sarah left the room after apologizing once more to everyone. Once they disappeared, Calix walked inside the room before throwing a question at Rowan.

"Father, can I look around my wife’s room in the meantime?"

Actually, Calix didn’t feel like talking to Rowan again after dinner earlier. He also wondered if Leslie wanted to do something in this room. They couldn’t talk openly if the others remained here.

"Of course," Rowan gestured at the room, "Spend as much time as you want here, Calix. The helper will come to get you once the guestroom is ready."

"Thank you," Calix smiled, "Have a good night, Father, Mother and Irene."

"See you tomorrow during breakfast."

Soon, only Calix and Leslie stayed inside the room. He made sure to close the door shut. He didn’t want anyone to hear him talking to the air.

Once Calix turned around, he saw Leslie standing opposite the vanity table. Her eyes were locked on the items placed there.

"Well... is the broken perfume your favorite? Are you sad it’s gone now?"

Calix was not sure what should he ask Leslie, leading him to come up with that question.

"No," Leslie shook her head. Without looking at Calix, she said, "Actually, I made the maid drop the bottle. I did it on purpose."

"What?" Calix was stunned, eyes widening, "Did you push the bottle when she’s not looking?"

Grinning, Leslie replied without an ounce of remorse, "I did it when she held the bottle."

Calix was caught in a daze, wondering why Leslie did such a thing. Even though they barely knew each other, he could tell she was not someone who would commit such an act without a good reason.

"What happened? Did she use to bully you?"

"...huh?"

This was Leslie’s turn to be surprised. She didn’t foresee Calix coming up with that kind of guess. He also didn’t look at her weirdly after she admitted to doing a childish thing.

"Did she not?" Calix shot his brows upward, "You knew doing that would land her in trouble. Surely she had done something bad, en?"

Leslie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The way Calix questioned her showed that he didn’t think badly of her. Instead, he immediately guessed that Sarah might be a bully.

"Well... she kinda like that. She... there were some things she had done before. About the perfume... she actually wanted to steal it."

Leslie exhaled a sigh, recalling the memories she saw earlier. Her expression sank as if she was the one who experienced the sorrow.

In those memories, Charlene never told anyone about her feelings after being betrayed by Sarah. She kept within herself. Not even her parents knew about it.

After all, Rowan and Bianca only tried so little to defend and console her. Eventually, all the resentment became thorns bleeding her heart.

Calix shook his head in helplessness, thinking no wonder Leslie pulled up such a stunt. The maid named Sarah committed a grave act by trying to steal from her mistress.

"Don’t look so downcast ah. You did the right thing. If it’s me, I’ll douse all perfume on her. Let her get drowsy because of the scent."

Leslie laughed. Calix’s words and intonation tickled her heart.

"Hehe, I know. I liked looking at her panicking just now. You should see it too ah. It’s hilarious."

Calix smiled faintly. He attempted to joke, "Your ghostly state has its advantages. Use it to mess with your enemies. I’ll support you."

"Hahaha! Should I?"

Relief washed over Calix as he watched Leslie laughing. He sensed that her mood was not that great earlier. Perhaps, many factors contributed to it.

Leslie didn’t have many good memories of this place. Meeting the people who mentally tormented her was not an easy thing to do as well.

But...

Why did she look excited when he agreed to spend the night here?

What else was she planning?
