Chapter 52: They Wouldn’t Pull That Trick, Right?

In the end, Old Madam Li relented to Calix’s wish. She almost gritted her teeth when she told Butler Yang to prepare for the young man’s necessities during his stay here tonight.

"Make sure my grandson-in-law is comfortable. Tell the kitchen to prepare breakfast for him tomorrow too."

The flustered Butler Yang swiftly abid to Old Madam Li’s commands.

"As you wish, Old Madam. I’ll ensure everything is well."

Leslie was amused by Old Madam Li trying to stay calm. Everyone could see that she was extremely annoyed with Calix’s constant show of disrespect toward her.

Well, as in disrespect according to her own definition.

From the first time Old Madam Li and Calix met, the young man held his head high when he had opinions to share. His actions spoke volumes.

Even though he was the grandson-in-law of the Li family, Calix wouldn’t let them lead him by the nose. He also repeatedly showed how important Leslie—Charlene—was as his wife thus, he wouldn’t tolerate any scorn.

After all, he was the heir of the Xu family and the current CEO of Xu International. His family standing was above the Li family.

If Old Madam Li and the rest insisted on making trouble, Calix wouldn’t stay still. He was not willing to suffer grievances.

"Thank you, Grandmother-in-law," Calix kept his composure. He pretended not to see Old Madam Li’s silent fury, "I’ll surely sleep well tonight. I’ve been meaning to stay even for a moment in my wife’s childhood bedroom."

"C-cough! That’s good to hear," Old Madam Li rose from her seat. Her face was slightly reddened, "I’ll head back to my room first. An old woman like me shouldn’t stay up for too long."

The clock was nearing nine o’clock. Old Madam Li’s words might hold some truth or, they simply form an excuse.

Nevertheless, Calix didn’t make it hard for Old Madam Li. He and the rest of the Li family members wished her to have a good night’s sleep.

"Grandmother-in-law, see you at breakfast tomorrow."

"T-thank you. You too..."

Calix’s cheerful tone sounded as if he had a good relationship with Old Madam Li. The matriarch was annoyed and flustered but, she couldn’t blatantly show it on her face.

Soon, Old Madam Li’s figure was nowhere to be seen. Two maids escorted her back to the bedroom.

"Father," Calix shifted his focus to Rowan. Smiling politely, he came up with a request, "Can you bring me to Charlene’s bedroom? She still lived here three days ago. Her room will always stay clean, I believe."

Rowan blinked. In a daze, his mind processed Calix’s words. Bianca also did the same.

Calix was implying that Leslie’s bedroom shouldn’t be abandoned just because she was someone’s wife now. It was her private space in this huge ancestral home, the place she spent decades of living before another phase of her life.

"Of course, we ordered the maids to keep it as it is," Bianca answered on behalf of Rowan. She smiled faintly, "Our daughter’s room might not be as big as yours but, you can sleep there comfortably."

"Mother, I don’t mind that," Calix waved one hand while laughing softly, "I’m Charlene’s husband now. I won’t be a good husband if I despise anything about her."

Calix’s friendly behavior toward Rowan and Bianca made Geoffrey speechless. Until now, he still couldn’t comprehend the fact that the young man chose his comatose niece as his bride.

What did he see in that useless girl?

To Geoffrey, his daughter Gladys was the better choice. She was far more beautiful than Charlene and her bright personality easily overshadowed the comatose girl’s gloominess.

Gnashing his teeth, Geoffrey glanced at Gladys. His heart broke at the sight of his daughter’s pitiful look. He could tell how disappointed she was with this development.

Leslie quietly watched everyone who remained in the dining room.

She was happy to see how at ease Calix was with her family. But, she wondered if Geoffrey and Gladys might scheme something unpleasant tonight.

Leslie frowned. A guess flashed in her mind.

’I know this is a dog-blood romance novel but... they won’t pull out that trick, right?’

The most common one was lacing the man’s food or drink with aphrodisiacs. Still, Leslie doubted any one of them dared to do such a thing tonight.

This was Calix’s first visit to the Li family’s ancestral home ever. The cunning people, especially Geoffrey and Gladys would suffer if they charged forward without any proper plan.

Nevermind.

Being in this invisible state brought Leslie good benefits. She could keep watch as she stayed by Calix’s side and give him warnings if necessary.

Thus, a worryless Leslie tailed from behind when Rowan, Bianca and Irene showed Calix the way to Charlene’s bedroom. Their living quarters were in the same direction.

None of them paid attention to Geoffrey and his family. None of them also saw the constipated look on their faces, excluding Derek who remained unfazed.

When Leslie, Calix and the others almost reached the bedroom, the stern voice of Butler Yang blared from the inside.

"How could you be so careless? Have you forgotten what First Madam told you?"

And...

"S-sorry! I’m so sorry, Butler Yang. I didn’t mean to do it!"

Calix paused from walking. Rowan and Bianca stared at each other in confusion while Irene pointed out.

"Isn’t that... Sarah? Why does Butler Yang get angry at her?"

"Did something happen?" murmured Bianca. She also recognized the voice of her eldest daughter’s maid.

Rowan turned to Calix, explaining, "Sarah is Charlene’s closest helper. She keeps her room clean even after Charlene leaves this house. They have a good relationship."

Calix raised his brows, showing his understanding.

Rowan, Bianca and Irene stepped inside the bedroom. They wanted to see what was truly happening.

Calix stayed outside. He subtly shifted his eyes to Leslie whose expression showed excitement.

What made her so happy ah?

Calix was oblivious to the reason why Leslie was giddy. Delight washed over her feelings as she thought how quickly Sarah got caught.

Hah!

She deserved this after betraying the person who trusted her the most!

She also dared to commit theft!

Such a person should meet the comeuppance.
