Chapter 523: The Damning Evidence
Chapter 523: The Damning Evidence
Calix finished everything urgent before pushing the less important for the next day. He rushed home, wanting to share the good news with Leslie. He also intended to review the files with her.
As Calix sat in the backseat, his mind wandered to his conversation with Xander this afternoon. His heartbeat sped up occasionally before it calmed down as he imagined how the ending was near than expected.
"Papa~ Welcome home!"
Calliope ran deng deng deng to the entryway once she spotted the car moving down the driveway to the main porch. Leslie followed from behind, her steps were still slow.
"I’m home."
Calix quickly picked Calliope up, earning laughter from the little dumpling. He kissed her cheeks twice before putting her down.
"You’re early today, honey," Leslie stated, her face telling Calix that she was pleased. She chuckled when the man pecked her lips.
"Work ended early," Calix replied with a smile, "Let’s get inside."
After changing into his home slippers, the family of three left the main entrance.
Calliope started telling Calix what she learned and played in kindergarten today. It was the little dumpling’s new favorite thing to do.
Calix and Leslie were glad because this meant Calliope enjoyed attending kindergarten. She easily made friends with her fellow children, even those from different classes.
While waiting for dinner, Calix and Leslie played in the backyard with Calliope. The little one was in the mood for swinging her fists and kicking her feet out these days.
"Mama, Papa, look! Little Aunt Eve teach Poppy this. Woosh!"
Calliope struck her fist into the air, followed by the sound effect from her little mouth. Her cheeks puffed, she kicked her right foot backward.
"Should we enroll her in any martial arts class? How about judo?"
Calix spoke his mind out loud as he watched Calliope kicking the air. Leslie couldn’t help but chuckle, also thinking the same.
"She will learn self-defense that way. I think that’s good."
Despite not wanting Calliope to suffer any minor or major injuries associated with learning martial arts, Leslie knew this was the best choice for the little one.
They might have bodyguards around but, Calliope should know how to defend herself when needed. Enrolling her in a martial arts class was a good option.
"We’ll think more about it later," Calix crossed his arms over his chest, wearing a proud smile on his face, "For sure, our daughter will be the best student there."
Leslie covered her mouth, holding back laughter from slipping out. She threw a loving look at Calix, thinking how adorable her man was for imagining that.
Soon, the family of three returned inside. Aunt Wendy had served dinner on the dining table.
The husband and wife listened more to Calliope’s story. The little one proudly brought up how her teacher praised her flower drawing today.
After dinner, Leslie led Calliope upstairs for her bathing time while Calix handled the dirty dishes. Once he was done, he cleaned the table before running upstairs to shower.
"Sweetheart, I have something to show you," was what Calix said once Leslie returned from Calliope’s room. He had just changed out of his clothes, wrapping a towel around his waist.
The slightly somber look on Calix’s face told Leslie this would be something important. Smiling, she asked, "Is it about Nicholas?"
"Yes," Calix nodded, his countenance softening, "Xander sent me some files. Let’s look over them together."
"Okay."
Like Calix, relief and excitement flooded Leslie’s heart. She knew that what both of them had been waiting for was nearby.
Calix and Leslie were not in a rush to see and discuss the files. Their priority was still Calliope. They accompanied their daughter in playing jigsaw puzzles and reading her storybooks.
Later that night, Calix brought Leslie to his home office. Calliope was already sound asleep. The little one drifted to slumberland as soon as her head hit the pillow.
"I only skimmed through them," said Calix as they sat on the couch in the seating area, "Xander explained a little about the files to me."
Leslie said nothing, her eyes intently staring at the laptop on Calix’s lap. His fingers deftly moved on the keyboard, logging into the secure channel before opening the files.
"Here. Let’s start with this."
Calix shifted the laptop on his lap, allowing Leslie to get a better look at the wide screen. The husband and wife’s full focus was on the files, carefully reading and watching every piece of evidence procured by Xander.
The air was thickened with tension. Both Leslie and Calix were surprised by how damning the evidence was.
Especially the one related to the mob boss’ death.
"It’s true," Calix murmured, his voice carrying a hint of strain, "Nicholas leaked the gang’s new trade to the rival one. He got monetary rewards out of it."
The rival gang was from another city, quite bigger than the one Nicholas and Daniel were a part of. The two men started building their tech business once they were rolling with the dirty funds.
The rival gang easily shut the local authorities up. The police didn’t dare to cross the thin boundary that would lead to a bloodbath. It was common at where Nicholas lived back then.
"The reward surely couldn’t sustain the company, wasn’t it?" asked Leslie, thinking about the start-up Nicholas and Daniel co-founded.
"It was enough as the base," Calix clicked on another file as he answered, "Nicholas turned away from a mob life since then but, he still keeps in touch with a few."
Xander found the information of Nicholas trying to cozy up with the notorious gangs in the country but, the latter hadn’t succeeded so far. He only had contact with a few small ones.
"Will the international police be involved?"
"Yes. The country police won’t have another choice once the international police involve themselves. Xander will make sure it happens."
Blinking, Leslie took some time to register the words in her mind. She couldn’t help but wonder how terrifying Xander could be.
But...
If he had this kind of ability, why couldn’t he use it properly to settle any misunderstanding he had with the female lead?!
