Chapter 522: Benefiting From The Male Lead’s Halo
Calix and Leslie were not shaken by their meeting with Nicholas. The latter wasn’t capable of harming them at all.
Kenneth informed Calix that Nicholas remained in the mall but, there was no questionable activity sighting. Team B continued monitoring the man from afar.
After finishing the ice creams, the family of three returned to Graceville Manor. Calliope slept so soundly in the child’s car seat, all exhausted yet happy from their outing.
"Has Xander contacted you again?" asked Leslie without looking at Calix. She gently stroked Calliope’s hair, smiling at the sight of their daughter sleeping so well.
"Not yet," Calix shook his head, a slight frown marring his forehead, "I guess next week. I can only wait for now."
Throwing his eyes out of the moving van, Calix recalled his previous conversation with Xander. His friend sounded very confident as he said he would join Calix taking Nicholas down.
"Everything will be okay, honey," Leslie turned to look at Calix. Extending one arm, she gently placed her palm on the back of his hand, "I believe in you two."
Faint chuckles rolled out from Calix’s lips. Smiling at Leslie, he squeezed her hand in response.
"Thank you, sweetheart."
Calix had already informed Vernon and Andrian about the recent findings discovered by Xander. His brother and father were both surprised to know how quickly the latter received the info.
What took them weeks of careful and discreet investigations, Xander achieved them within a short time.
Andrian and Vernon couldn’t help but sing praises to Xander. Calix refrained from telling them the truth behind his friend’s high level of skills.
Upon arriving home, Calix and Leslie put the matter of bumping into Nicholas to the back of their minds. Still, he informed Andrian and Vernon about it.
The husband and wife went on their days like usual, enjoying the passing of time.
Waking up next to each other, having meals together, strolling in the backyard and swimming in either the pool or the lake. Everything brought peace to them.
The husband and wife were also being attentive to their daughter.
Sending and picking her up from kindergarten, reading her storybooks, playing jigsaw puzzles together and listening to her continuous chatting.
The temperature was still quite high despite the season transitioning from summer to autumn. The leaves wouldn’t change colors until much later.
After over a week of no contact, Calix finally received more favorable news from Xander.
The heir of the Qin family sent countless encrypted files to Calix through a secure channel, with every damning evidence from one file to the other.
Calix had already prepared himself for Xander’s show of near-omnipotence as the absolute male lead but... this went beyond his expectation!
The two friends talked over the phone for a bit as Xander explained the files to Calix. The former ended the call with words full of remorse.
"You and Leslie have forgiven me but, take this as my apology for my misjudgment. Nicholas’ ending. I’ll present it to you."
Xander made it clear to Calix that he would assist the latter until Nicholas exited his life. Even though the man hadn’t shown more dangerous behaviors, it was better to nip the problem in the bud.
This would save all of them from any bigger and more complicated hassle in the future.
Calix could only extend his gratitude to Xander.
After ending the phone call, he had to hold back from reviewing the files because more important work waited for him. He only skimmed through them for now.
A huge grin was carved on Calix’s lips as happiness illuminated his countenance. His heartbeat sped up the more he thought about Nicholas’ soon downfall.
This was it.
This was what he was waiting for!
Indeed. With the male lead’s help, he would get to end the last villain with a clean and quick strike.
As his happiness soared up, Calix started to whistle. He didn’t notice Edward knocking on the door, only to step inside because he heard no response.
"Boss Xu, you look so happy."
Edward stared at Calix suspiciously as he approached the man’s work desk.
Before, his boss usually looked this happy when his close subordinates didn’t annoy him. Including when he received good reports about their quarterly and annual sales.
Now, there was another reason to get his boss this happy. It was none other than going home early to his wife and daughter. Or any other thing related to them.
Calix finished scribbling his signature with a swift, decisive stroke before looking up at Edward. Raising his brows, he stated, "Get ready to watch the police catch Nicholas soon."
"...what?"
Edward blinked his eyes, thinking his ears played a trick on him. Shaking his head, he snapped out of his trance.
"Boss Xu, do you mean... you’ve gotten any crucial evidence against him?"
Edward knew that Calix was still looking for solid proof to trap Nicholas. Without it, the latter could easily be bailed out. Nicholas would also be more wary in the future.
That was the reason Calix played such a slow yet quiet game. He didn’t want to alert Nicholas about their movements at all.
"Xander found it for me," Calix pushed himself backward, leaning against the plush office chair, "He’s really something ah. I wonder what kind of informant whatsoever he has on his side."
When Leslie brought up how Xander was supposed to be an almost perfect male lead, Calix remembered the few times he questioned his friend’s stellar abilities.
One of them was a foreign informant they dubbed as Xander’s hidden card. Calix, Davin and Ryken knew the man existed but, that was the only information they had.
’Another setup to amplify the male lead’s abilities. Well, at least I benefit from it.’
Laughing faintly, Calix reminded himself not to feel guilty for benefiting from Xander’s male lead’s halo. Getting his friend’s help was the better choice.
"I haven’t seen all files yet," said Calix as Edward was still quietly staring at him, "But, one thing is for sure. He’ll have nowhere to go but jail soon."
