Instead of answering Leslie immediately, Calix carried her toward the pool’s edge, wading through the water. He tightened his arms around her figure, ensuring she was safe.
Once they reached the pool’s edge, Calix carefully placed Leslie on the tile before jumping out of the pool, taking a seat by her side. The water lapped around their legs, soaking in the pool.
Wrapping one arm across her back, Calix pulled Leslie closer. A faint smile graced his lips as she leaned her head on his chest. The water dripping from his hair slid on his face, some fell on her.
"Leslie, you wanna know how I face him later, en? When it’s the end?"
Leslie nodded softly, feeling warm and comfortable in Calix’s embrace. Tilting her chin up, her eyes searched for his, finding his usual smiley ones.
Calix raised one hand, brushing a strand of wet hair from Leslie’s face. He chuckled when she instinctively leaned closer to him.
Parting his lips, Calix let what was true in his heart out.
"If possible, I don’t want anything dramatic to happen. No kidnapping, no bloodbath whatsoever. After all, we’ve gone through so much already, sweetheart."
Leslie quietly listened to Calix. His words might seem funny to other people but, she knew what he meant.
Calix, experienced death once as Axel. Even when he woke up as Calix six years ago, he endured months of tormenting rehabilitation to regain the normal functions of his body.
Leslie, also experienced death once. The pain still lingered despite how far she had come. Like Calix, she also went through rehabilitation albeit shorter and less painful than him.
Both of them desired to live a peaceful life with their daughter, also their new family in this world.
"I agree with you, Calix," Leslie placed a palm on Calix’s chest, feeling the faint vibration from his beating heart, "We’ll strike him with everything we have. Never let him counter-attack us."
Chuckles slipped out of Calix’s mouth. He liked the fiery determination in Leslie’s eyes, also how firmly her voice was.
"We’ve recruited Xander to our side. He might be a fool but, he’s better suited to this. No doubt, he’ll exhaust all resources to dig into Nicholas’ background."
"Hehe~ Are you saying you push all the hard parts to him?" Leslie burst out laughing, finding how crafty her husband could be.
"Of course," Calix raised one eyebrow, his countenance softening further, "He’s the ultimate male lead here, right? He can’t be one without doing the hard parts."
Shaking her head in helplessness, Leslie pointed out, "His people who will do all the hard work. Remember, like you task Edward with anything?"
"Cough! They get paid well not for nothing."
More giggles bubbled from Leslie’s lips. Being Calix Xu for over six years, her usually frugal Axel had changed so much. Thankfully, he didn’t turn stingy or arrogant.
"So, that’s one thing," Calix gently pinched Leslie’s face, "What’s the second?"
Blinking, Leslie ceased laughing. She stared at Calix whose lips melted into a honeyed smile.
"Oh... I’m thinking... It’s about us. Our family."
Leslie paused, quite hesitant to bring up the issue. Locking her eyes with Calix’s, she sensed silent encouragement from him.
What would he think?
She had been thinking about the issue for a long time but, she never had the chance to bring it up.
Parting her lips, Leslie locked her resolute gaze on Calix’s curious one.
"Honey, what do you think about having more children? Do you want it?"
Calix’s brows arched slightly in surprise. Peering into Leslie’s gaze, all he could see was determination.
Having more children with her, en?
Calix had never expressed it verbally but, he used to think about it. He didn’t expect that Leslie would bring up the subject first.
"Sweetheart," Calix reached for Leslie’s hand, gently giving it a squeeze. His eyes didn’t stray from hers, "I do. I wish to have more children with you but, only if you’re willing."
Calix mourned the loss of the experience of taking care of the pregnant Leslie and raising Calliope from infancy. Yet, it didn’t mean he would force her to give him another child.
"...only if I’m willing?"
Calix nodded lightly to Leslie’s question. Smiling, he calmly explained, "Your body is still weak, my love. And... if you ever feel traumatized from your previous labor, I’d rather not go through with it."
Leslie had shared some stories with Calix about when she was pregnant and then, single-handedly raising Calliope. She said she was content with the experience but, he couldn’t help but worry.
If Leslie desired to have another child but was afraid of her previous experience, Calix would spare nothing in getting her the best therapist. He would also join her journey.
"Oh, honey~"
Under Calix’s surprised gaze, Leslie wrapped her arm around his neck, pulling him closer and leaving soft kisses on his lips.
"Sweetheart, what happened?" asked Calix, curious about Leslie’s sudden action.
"Hehe, you’re so adorable," Leslie chuckled, feeling her heart melt under his genuine care. Her eyes glimmered with delight, "I’m more than willing, honey."
Leslie fully understood the worry that nagging at the back of Calix’s mind. He was always careful and attentive during the times she told him stories about her and Calliope before.
The period was indeed hard for Leslie as a young single mother but, her perseverance paid off.
"T-then... Let’s wait until you’re healthier," said Calix, his voice brimming with tension, "We’ll consult Dr. Mo too. Perhaps, you’ll be ready sometime next year. What do you think?"
"Hehe, okay~"
Feeling his heart sweetened by honey, Calix smiled sheepishly. He secured the nape of Leslie’s neck in one palm as he slowly lowered her to the floor.
Leslie encircled another arm around Calix’s neck, her fingers brushing through his damp hair. She wanted to kiss him again badly but, she still needed to address some issues.
"Calix, I know you still feel guilty for missing out on my pregnancy and Poppy’s growth."
Calix flinched, his eyes staring blankly at Leslie. She lowered one hand, gently grazing her fingertips on his cheek.
Smiling softly, Leslie said, "And, you might feel guilty again when I’m pregnant. You might think you shouldn’t replace what you miss out on with Poppy by pining it on our second child."
Calix was at a loss for words. Everything Leslie had just said struck a chord because that was what he felt. He also believed that his guilt would intensify once she carried their second child.
"Haa..." Calix buried his face in the crook of Leslie’s neck, sensing his energy leaving, "I think... I should get a therapist. I’m really not sure... how to process my feelings."
"We’ll do it together," Leslie gently stroked Calix’s back, agreeing with his thoughts, "I’ll be with you, honey."
Calix let out a haggard breath. Slowly rising from lying on Leslie, all he could see in her eyes was love and understanding.
He was truly blessed to have her in his life.
"My love..."
Calix dipped his head in, finding Leslie’s lips with his. His kiss was slow and deliberate, wishing to savor every moment they shared together.
Leslie parted her lips, allowing Calix to deepen the kiss. As their breaths mingled, the world seemed to fade around them.
