Chapter 501: How Would He Face Him Later?
Unfortunately for Xander, Calix didn’t make it easy for him.
Leaning comfortably against the cushion, Calix said, "Investigate him yourself."
"...what?"
Calix’s remark caught Xander off guard. He blankly stared at his friend, the frown on his forehead deepening.
"Didn’t you just tell me to be wary of Nicholas?" Xander repeated Calix’s previous statement, "Doesn’t it mean you’ve already known something is wrong with him?"
Knowing how meticulous Calix was, Xander believed his friend didn’t bring this up out of nowhere. The former most likely had uncovered something bad related to Nicholas.
Xander wasn’t particularly close to Nicholas. Most of the time, he just treated the latter—Belinda’s new boyfriend—amicably during their few rare meetings.
Calix curled his lips upon seeing the confusion on Xander’s face. A hint of smug laced his smile as he enjoyed annoying his friend.
"Use your resources to dig into his background. I won’t spoonfeed you this time."
Xander sighed out of exasperation. He stared at the smug Calix, his eyes deadpan,"...you sure hold grudges long."
"Thank you! That’s a good compliment!"
Shrugging, Calix winked at Xander once, earning a disgusted look from the latter.
Leslie simply watched the two men’s childish interaction. She was glad they had reached a mutual understanding.
Now that Calix and Xander’s friendship was restored, hopefully stronger than before, Leslie doubted Nicholas could manipulate Xander to ruin Calix and the Xu family.
They shared a casual chat after the previous tense conversation. Xander and Calix caught up with each other’s lives after months of being in the cold war.
When the clock struck a little over nine-thirty, Calix and Leslie sent Xander to the door. It was time for the man to return home.
"Let’s gather some other time," said Calix before Xander got into the car, "Before that Ryken flew off somewhere."
Xander quickly nodded, agreeing with Calix, "Sure. We can discuss it later."
Soon, the sedan drove away from the manor, gliding smoothly on the driveway. Calix and Leslie stood on the porch until Xander’s car vanished behind the giant gates.
Leslie tilted up her chin, smilingly looking at Calix. She sensed how relaxed her husband was, a stark contrast to before.
"I’m glad to see you’re good again with him."
Leslie’s words earned a smile from Calix. Tearing his eyes away from the gates, he gazed into her eyes.
"He’s lucky that you stopped me before I punched him."
"Hahaha! You still think of that?"
Laughing out loud, Leslie leaned her face on Calix’s chest. Her beloved swiftly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer.
"Honey, I wonder whether Violet will get back with Xander or not."
The question slipped into Calix’s mind as Leslie thought of the possibility.
"It depends on her heart and Xander’s changes," muttered Calix after a moment to ponder, "He’s my friend but I’ll be honest. He sucks so bad when wooing her. It’s better now that Violet is firmer than before."
More laughter bubbled up from Leslie’s lips. Calix’s honesty tickled her heart.
"Hehe, you’re right. Violet shouldn’t forgive him easily ah."
"Enough about him," Calix lowered his head, whispering into Leslie’s ear. His voice was a low, seductive murmur, "The night is great. Wanna swim with me?"
Beaming, Leslie quickly nodded, "Hehe~ Let’s go!"
The lovebirds returned inside the manor. Before heading to their room to change into swimwear, Calix and Leslie went to check on Calliope first.
The little dumpling fell asleep when Aunt Wendy narrated a story from one of her favorite storybooks. The housekeeper was still there, staying by Calliope’s side.
"Thank you for today, Aunt Wendy," said Calix after telling the middle-aged lady to return to the annex, "You don’t need to prepare breakfast tomorrow. I’ll do it."
"Poppy wants Calix to make her pancakes. No need to come to work early, Aunt Wendy. Enjoy some breakfast time with Uncle Raymond."
Leslie chimed in, her voice quiet as she fondly looked at the sleeping Calliope. The little dumpling made the request this morning before Calix went to work.
"I’ll do that then," Aunt Wendy chuckled. She was elated by the offer, "That old man has been saying he wants to visit the new breakfast bar in town. We can go there tomorrow."
"Yes, do that!"
Calix quickly nodded, urging Aunt Wendy to go through with the plan. Leslie didn’t need as much assistance as before even without the private nurses’ presence.
Aunt Wendy bid good night to Calix and Leslie before happily returning to the annex. The lovebirds also left the bedroom. Their little one had drifted further into her slumber.
"Let’s go change," Calix patted Leslie’s back.
"En."
Calix and Leslie immediately changed into swimwear. The man opted for a plain navy blue swimming trunk while the lady chose a one-piece white swimsuit.
This was not the first time Calix and Leslie swam at night after Calliope went to bed. The lovebirds enjoyed having more time together before they called it a night.
"Ah, it feels so nice."
Floating on her back with her limbs stretching out, Leslie stared at the night sky. She mourned the lack of stars sighting due to the other artificial lights.
Calix chuckled as he waded closer to Leslie. He remembered how much his beloved enjoyed swimming.
Leslie also shared stories with Calix about bringing Calliope to the public pools whenever she had time.
"What are you thinking about, en?"
Calix loosened the tension of his body, letting his body float on the back like Leslie. The water rippled around him as the view of the night sky greeted his eyesight.
"I have two things in my mind now," replied Leslie, her eyes remaining on the sky.
Intrigued by Leslie’s remarks, Calix quickly asked, "Oh? What is it?"
Leslie moved from floating horizontally on her back to keeping her body in the water, only her neck upward was visible.
Calix swiftly did the same. He simply stood on the floor rather than floating.
They were swimming in the middle part of the pool, around five feet in depth. The shallow part of the pool was on the right side, around two feet in depth. The left side was the deepest.
"What are you thinking, en?" Calix repeated his words from before, helplessness was imbued in his voice, "About Nicholas Wu?"
Calix was relieved that Leslie was less anxious than before but, it didn’t mean the worry related to Nicholas had entirely gone from her mind.
Oblivious to what was going on in Calix’s mind, Leslie muttered, her eyes staring at the shimmering water.
"I wonder, what do you plan to... ah! Calix!"
Leslie screamed mid-sentence when Calix slipped his arms under her without a warning, lifting her effortlessly mid-water. Splashes of water rose and fell, creating more ripples.
"C-Calix!"
Leslie smacked Calix’s shoulder, causing him to laugh out loud. His chest trembled from the inner vibration.
"What makes my sweetheart look so worried, en?" asked Calix in between laughter, "What do you mean about my plan?"
Pursing her lips, Leslie pouted. She placed her arms around Calix’s neck, aware that she was being carried by him. His arms steadily supported her weight.
"Well... Have you thought about how you’re going to face Nicholas later?"
Calix arched his brows, "Are you thinking about that?"
"...yes."
Leslie nodded meekly. Her sheepish look earned a helpless smile from Calix.
How he would face Nicholas later?
Calix had already thought of that.
