Chapter 500: Do Better Lest My Husband Will Kick You Out
"Xander, do you still think I do not suit Calix? As his wife?"
Leslie’s question, despite being spoken calmly, made both Calix and Xander uncomfortable.
Her eyes were locked on the man sitting across her. The hint of unease was evident on his usually rigid countenance.
What was his answer?
Leslie wasn’t the only one wanting to know it. Calix felt the same.
The atmosphere in the lounge was always warm and cozy but, the ambiance changed tonight. The tension in the air seemed to thicken with each passing minute.
Seeing the uneasy look on Xander’s face, Leslie spoke again, "Please answer me honestly."
No matter what the man’s answer was, Leslie wished that Xander would be truthful.
Xander unconsciously dropped his gaze for a second before looking up. His slightly sunken countenance shifted, showing his resolution.
Staring straight at the calm Leslie, Xander replied, his voice steady, "Yes. I still think so."
Xander’s answer hit Calix like a slap. Clenching his hands, he abruptly stood up. His eyes blazed with fury, ready to lash out at his friend.
"XANDER! Did you lie to me? About being sorry? You’re here just to insult my wife again?"
His voice blaring in the lounge, Calix’s chest heaved, rising and falling at a rapid rate. His previously joyful countenance vanished, replaced by a mask of rage.
How could he?
How could he dare to utter such nonsense again?
"Calix, let him finish."
Leslie interjected softly, reaching for Calix’s hand. She sensed his body shivering, mostly out of anger.
"No need to hear his excuses," Calix turned to Leslie, his eyes glinting with a mix of fury and sadness, "I won’t let him insult you again. This..."
"Calix, sit down."
Leslie tugged at Calix’s hand more forcibly. Her voice also yielded more force as she tried to calm him down.
Calix was at a loss for words. Looking from the calm Leslie to the stoic Xander, his burst of anger depleted. Without saying a word, he reluctantly returned to his seat.
Squeezing his hand, Leslie hoped that Calix wouldn’t let his rage get to his head. Her smile deepened when he pressed her hand in return.
Leslie peeled her eyes away from Calix, once again focusing on Xander. She almost chuckled seeing how deeply uncomfortable the man was.
"Please continue. I know you have more to say but, your choice of words and timing were wrong. Do better this time lest you want my husband to kick you out."
Leslie tilted her chin, urging Xander to resume from where he was forced to stop by Calix. Her tone had a hint of playfulness, something both men didn’t expect in this kind of situation.
"...I did time them wrongly. I meant to say..."
Xander exhaled, nervously darting his eyes from Calix to Leslie. Taking a deep breath, the man paused to recollect his thoughts and rearrange his words.
Calix was still fuming but, he held back from lashing out at Xander because of Leslie. His wife still held his hand, occasionally giving him reassuring squeezes.
"What I meant is..." Xander began, his tone wavering slightly, "Yes, I once thought you didn’t suit Calix..."
Xander’s words riled Calix up. He almost jumped out of his seat again but, Leslie tightened her grip on his hand. She nodded at the former, urging him to continue.
Xander was inwardly relieved for Leslie being here as Calix’s leash. He also berated himself for not speaking properly again, causing this misunderstanding.
He was never one to be shaken easily but, tonight was among the rare times he felt so.
Parting his lips, Xander spoke again, this time he was calmer, "It’s the same as me and Violet. Many people think she doesn’t suit me but, I still want her."
Bringing Violet into this conversation flooded Xander’s heart with sadness. She still distanced herself from him, even unwilling to reply to his messages.
But...
No matter how much Xander missed Violet, he ceased pressuring her to return. He didn’t want to push her away completely.
Xander wouldn’t give up on Violet but, he wouldn’t use his overbearing ways anymore.
’He calms down a little.’
Leslie glanced at Calix, sensing his fury diminished a little. It seemed like Xander’s words reached through his infuriated mind.
Xander let out another sigh. Taking a pause, he shifted his eyes from Leslie to Calix. He couldn’t deny how good as a couple they were once he went beyond his prejudice.
"Ryken is right," Xander resumed, his voice losing its initial edge, "What matters most is your happiness, Calix. A good friend should wish you that. And... I failed you."
Blinking, Calix was stunned upon hearing Xander’s heartfelt confession. He never thought this arrogant friend of his would backtrack from his perspective to humbly accept others’.
Really... Life could be surprising.
Or...
What if a much more kinder soul possessed Xander?
Calix inwardly shook his head, chasing the ridiculous thoughts away. Leslie would tease him if he ever brought up that kind of suspicion again.
Leslie wasn’t really oblivious to Calix’s thoughts. She also couldn’t help but think of the same but, she believed this was Xander’s turning point.
Fortunately, this issue wasn’t dragged far longer.
"Xander."
Both Calix and Xander looked at Leslie once she called the man, waiting for what would come out of her mouth.
"To err is human. I don’t want to prolong this unnecessary feud. All I can say is, it’s good that you lower your ego to see other people’s perspectives on some issues."
Xander nodded once, feeling how much Leslie’s words struck a chord in his heart.
Placing his palms on his lap, Xander lowered his head slightly.
"I’m sorry, Leslie. I apologize for being so judgmental of you when... I haven’t even gotten to know you."
The weight of Xander’s apology rang in the air. Leslie smiled while Calix was still startled by the obvious change in the former.
"I accept your apology," Leslie chuckled, her tone softening, "I heard you have a problem with Violet. Hopefully, you’ve learned your lesson."
"...yes," Xander awkwardly straightened his back, nodding again at Leslie.
Calix exhaled a sigh of relief. Narrowing his eyes, he said truthfully, "You’re lucky my hand wasn’t quicker. You’d end up with another punch this week."
"Please, no..." Xander laughed dryly, shaking his head, "I had to wear thick makeup because of Ryken."
Ryken’s punch left quite a mark on Xander’s face, forcing him to resort to applying some concealer to hide the bruises.
Leslie was glad to see the light banter between the two men but, they had another important issue at hand. They couldn’t afford to delay this now that Calix and Xander had made up.
"We have something to discuss with you, Xander," Leslie spoke, bringing the two men’s focus back on her, "I’ll leave the explaining to Calix."
"Something to discuss?" Xander blinked, a hint of curiosity flickering in his eyes, "What is it?"
Understanding what Leslie meant, Calix nodded. He unconsciously lowered his tone as he said, "You know Belle’s new boyfriend, don’t you? You have to be wary of him."
"Do you mean Nicholas? The Nicholas Wu?"
Calix and Leslie nodded in sync, spiking more of Xander’s curiosity.
"What’s wrong with him? What do you know, Calix?"
Frowning, an image of Nicholas was conjured in Xander’s mind.
