Chapter 499: She Was Indeed His Child

Chapter 499: She Was Indeed His Child

An excited Calliope made Xander the focus of her unfiltered attention during dinner. Every question that came out of her mouth only made the usually stoic Xander speechless.

"Uncle Xander, are you friends with Uncle Ryken too? You like Uncle Ryken too, right?"

Swinging her short legs under the table, Calliope kept staring at Xander with her round eyes, glimmering with curiosity. She was so interested in this other friend of her papa.

The chopsticks in Xander’s hand paused mid-air. His dark eyes returned the gaze Calliope gave her. He could tell how much the little dumpling liked Ryken from the question.

"Yes, Poppy. I’m friends with your Uncle Ryken too," answered Xander, his voice quiet. His eyes fell on the little girl sitting across the table.

Unsatisfied with something, Calliope tilted her head. She shot Xander with another question, "Uncle Xander, you no answer me. You like Uncle Ryken too, right? Right?"

Xander blinked, thinking why Calliope was fixated on that particular question. He ignored Calix who masked his chuckle by coughing. Leslie simply bit her lower lip, trying not to laugh.

The male lead’s usually rigid demeanor cracked under the weight of the little dumpling’s relentless questions.

"...yes. He’s my friend. I won’t be his friend if I don’t like him."

Xander finally replied, his voice unusually tight. He shot a sharp look at Calix when the latter coughed loudly.

For some reason, the healed spot on his face tingling with pain again. Xander would forever remember the time Ryken punched him.

Despite wanting to prolong the fun of watching Xander being in a tight spot, Calix knew he had to stop Calliope. Leslie had already pinched his thigh, signaling him to do so.

Sigh... He had to behave ah lest his wife would nag at him.

Trying to avert Calliope’s attention, Calix said, "Poppy, tell your Uncle Xander to try this cashew chicken. Isn’t this your favorite dish? You like sharing, right?"

As if a switch was being flicked, Calliope’s focus changed from interrogating Xander to talking about her favorite food.

"Ohhh! Uncle Xander, try this! The cashew chicken is yummy yum! Granny Wendy made it!"

Calix laughed out loud. His little daughter was indeed gluttonous. She wouldn’t spare a second once her attention was directed to food.

Xander didn’t know whether to be grateful or not with the change of topic. As Calliope kept talking about her favorite cashew chicken, followed by other food, one thought grew more prominently in his mind.

Indeed.

Calliope was Calix’s child.

If not, how else she could be as chatty as him?

Leslie silently watched Xander across the table. She didn’t talk much throughout dinner, letting Calix and Calliope do the task of entertaining the male lead.

Unlike before, Leslie didn’t sense any hostility from Xander. He seemed to still be wary of her but, nothing was alarming.

After dinner, the family of three and Xander moved to the lounge. Aunt Wendy served them some strawberry and mango pudding and tea before clearing the dining room.

"Uncle Xander, let’s play."

"...jigsaw puzzle? Okay."

Calliope invited Xander to play a jigsaw puzzle which the male lead awkwardly accepted. The little dumpling chose the one of a colorful candyhouse.

Calix had so much fun recording his friend, hunching on the floor, trying to fit the puzzle pieces under Calliope’s instructions. The little one disliked placing the board on the coffee table.

The sight amused Leslie as well. She never thought she could witness the unapproachable male lead being forced to entertain a child playing.

Half an hour later, Aunt Wendy appeared as requested by Calix. He looked at Calliope who was still engrossed in her play with Xander.

Now was the time for the important conversation. Unfortunately, they shouldn’t do it with Calliope around. The talk would be heavy and most likely take time.

Leaving the couch, Calix patted Calliope’s little head, his voice soft, "Poppy, Papa and Mama need to talk to your Uncle Xander. Why don’t you follow Granny Wendy upstairs?"

Calliope tore her round eyes away from the unfinished jigsaw puzzle board before looking at the smiling Aunt Wendy to Calix.

"Okay. Granny Wendy will read story for Poppy~"

Jumping to her feet, Calliope waved both hands at Xander, "Uncle Xander, Poppy go first ah. Bye-bye."

Laughing, Calix hugged Calliope before smooching her chubby cheeks. The little dumpling giggled, playfully pushing her papa away.

Calliope didn’t forget to get Leslie to kiss her before she finally followed Aunt Wendy. The little dumpling held hands with the housekeeper, happily chatting about the pudding she ate.

"She’s... obedient."

Unsure of what he should say, Xander came up with that remark. His dark eyes trailed after Calliope as the little one gradually vanished from sight. Her faint footsteps echoed alongside Aunt Wendy’s.

"Of course! Our daughter is good! She listens to us well! Didn’t you see her at dinner? She’s not a picky eater either!"

Calix spared no time praising Calliope in front of Xander, earning helpless laughter from Leslie. The man’s boasting received a deadpan look from his friend.

Once Calix returned to his seat by Leslie’s side, his gaze zeroed into Xander. Arching his brows, he said, "Now’s the time. What do you have to say to my wife?"

Xander unconsciously straightened his back. He rose from the floor, leaving the jigsaw puzzle board there. He sank into the couch opposite Calix and Leslie.

Clasping his hands together, Xander quietly looked at Leslie. He noticed the lady only had a smile on her lips, treating him well as a guest as if she wasn’t bothered by his accusations before.

Leslie’s smile deepened at the sight of Xander’s anxious look. Parting her lips, she asked him a question that caught both Xander and Calix off guard.

"Xander, do you still think I do not suit Calix?"

Leslie’s voice remained soft but, the weight behind her question struck Xander hard. Her eyes, always so calm, quietly assessing the man’s countenance.

Calix’s face hardened in the next second. He leaned closer to Leslie, taking a protective stance. Pursing his lips, he began wondering what kind of answer Xander would give.

His friend seemed sincere in apologizing but, did it mean his whole view on Leslie had changed?
