Chapter 480: The Silly Man’s Lovestruck Grin
Nicholas and Daniel’s arrogance blinded them to the forces lurking nearby to monitor their every move. Calix was already aware of their attendance at the auction hosted by the Chang family.
Master Chang was one of Andrian’s friends in high society. The former often organized an auction, mostly to fundraise for the good causes supported by his elderly mother.
Master Chang invited Andrian and Harper but, the spouses had already planned to head abroad for a short trip. As always, Calix stepped in to represent his parents.
Whatever Nicholas and Daniel might have in plan, Calix and his security team would remain vigilant. They couldn’t afford to lose under the two deceptive guys’ trickery.
At the same time, Calix also didn’t let Nicholas and Daniel bother with his peace too much. He continued spending more time with Leslie and Calliope as usual, forsaking the unnecessary social events.
Calix still took his time asking Leslie about her life before coming to this world. He was grateful because his wife complied with his wish to learn about her previous life with their daughter slowly, one at a time.
So far, Calix had just reached the part when Leslie came to terms with Axel’s death. He hugged her tight, hoping to offer her comfort as they cried in silence.
On Monday night, Calix and Leslie stayed in the kitchen after putting Calliope to bed. None of them spoke about their previous lives tonight.
CEO Xu wanted to satisfy his beloved wife’s craving for his egg fried rice. The alluring aroma of the dish floated in the air before spreading to the entire kitchen.
"Can’t take your eyes off me, huh?"
Calix asked teasingly as he transferred the fried rice into a plate. He only cooked in a small quantity because Leslie just wanted to have a taste, not because she was hungry.
"Oh? Should I stare at the cabinet behind you then?" Leslie arched her brows, looking innocently at Calix. She waited at the kitchen island while Calix cooked at the stove.
"Does it mean the cabinet is more handsome than me?" Calix narrowed his eyes, pretending to be unhappy as he placed the plate in front of Leslie.
Tilting her head, Leslie winked playfully, "No, you’re the more handsome one."
Calix froze, feeling his heart suspended for a second before it beat rapidly against his chest. A faint blush tinted his cheeks as he struggled not to smile.
But, the silly man failed.
His pout quickly turned into a lovestruck grin.
Leslie chuckled, unable to hold back because of how adorable her husband was. Tugging at his shirt, she gestured at him to sit.
"Sit down ah. Come and eat with me."
"Wait, let me get you some drink."
Calix hurried to the water dispenser, getting a glass of warm water for his wife. Leslie smilingly looked at his back before drifting her eyes to the plate of egg fried rice.
Seeing this simple dish brought a fond smile to Leslie’s lips. She would never forget the first night she arrived in this world.
Despite being unable to accept her uncanny appearance in the form of a soul, he treated her well from the beginning. He went as far as preparing a dish just because she was hungry.
"Why aren’t you eating?" asked Calix once he returned with a drink, "Waiting for it to cool down?"
"Hehe, waiting for you ah."
A helpless smile was drawn on Calix’s lips. Sitting down next to Leslie, he pushed the plate closer to her.
"I hope it tastes as good as you expect."
"My honey is always a good cook. How could your dishes taste bad ah?"
Leslie’s cheeky reply earned another bashful look from Calix. Her laughter rang in the quiet kitchen, softening the ambiance between them further.
Scooping some of the rice, Leslie blew on it before taking her first bite. She smiled at Calix when the man tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"You look happier tonight, my love," Calix stated, his gaze mellowing as he stared at Leslie, "Because of your call with Mrs. Wang today?"
More chuckles slipped out Leslie’s lips. Nodding once, she inevitably praised Calix while explaining, "You really can read my mind, don’t you? Hehe, we had a pleasant chat."
Mrs. Wang would come to Silvercrest City next week. Considering the older woman’s willingness to travel far just to meet her, Leslie felt bad for not contacting her sooner.
Leslie was still anxious when she made the phone call but, she was glad that she did so. Mrs. Wang repeatedly chanted how thankful she was because the lady was recovering well.
Mrs. Wang’s joy upon talking to Leslie helped to smoothen the lady’s tensed nerves. After the initial awkwardness, they chatted as if they were old friends.
The memory of this afternoon was conjured in Leslie’s mind, reminding her of her first conversation with Mrs. Wang.
"I’m sorry for not calling you until now, Auntie Sofia. I’m sorry... for worrying you."
The middle-aged woman had nothing but only warmth and kindness for her.
"You’re busy recuperating, aren’t you? Charlene, I’m just so grateful to know you’re safe."
Charlene and Mrs. Wang grew closer in the past few years, enough for them to address each other on a first-name basis. Leslie wished to honor the older lady like how Charlene had always done before.
"Honey, I think..." Leslie blinked, returning her focus to Calix who patiently waited for her to speak, "Charlene viewed Mrs. Wang as the mother she wished to have."
Understanding what Leslie meant, Calix wrapped his arm around her back. He rubbed slow circles on the exposed skin of her round shoulder, his smile reflected in her eyes.
"We’ll take care of her, sweetheart. That’s the least we can do for Charlene," Calix breathed out, his heart tingling with a bittersweet sensation, "It’s selfish for me to say this but, if not for her choice, I might not meet you again."
And... he might not remember who he was.
Calix learned from Leslie that Charlene offered her body and life before his beloved came to this world. Since then, he often prayed for Charlene to have a better life wherever she was now.
"...yes, honey. That’s the least we can do for Charlene," Leslie replied, her voice a low murmur, tingeing with a slight sadness, "It’s the same for me. If not for her benevolence, I won’t ever meet you again."
That was the undeniable truth.
For as long as she was alive, she would keep praying for Charlene, her benefactor.
"...en?"
Leslie blinked, realizing that Calix had taken the spoon from her hand. The man smiled at her before taking some of the rice, bringing the spoon to her mouth.
"Let me feed you," Calix playfully raised his brows, urging Leslie to part her lips, "I missed the days when I needed to feed you, sweetheart."
Calix’s random action and remark earned helpless chuckles from Leslie. Those days enfolded her heart with fondness because she could tell how genuine his care was toward her.
"Okay~ I won’t say no to you pampering me more."
Leslie resumed eating, happily savoring the egg fried rice cooked by her oh-so-desirable husband.
Aside from effortlessly charming his way into her heart, he also did the same to her tummy.
