Chapter 481: The One Dramatic Friend

Chapter 481: The One Dramatic Friend

The next day, Calix busied away in the office. He had more important tasks to do today but, he still hoped to return home for dinner.

Calix yearned for nothing else at the end of each long day at work. He wished to come home to his beloved wife and daughter, dining together and spending some time before bed.

Edward kept coming and going from the CEO’s office, having to report certain progress directly to Calix. He looked as exhausted as the latter as the day went by.

The younger man didn’t forget to hint at applying for another vacation to which he earned a deadpan look from his boss.

Their main focus today was on the work related to the company. There was nothing new and significant about Nicholas’ side, something Calix was thankful for.

He didn’t want to add more burden and stress to himself because of the cowardly bastard. At least, let him live a rather peaceful life this week.

"Haaa! I’m so sleepy..."

Calix let out a huge yawn once he completed another task. Rising to his feet, he did a couple of stretches, trying to alleviate his muscle soreness from sitting for too long.

"Boss Xu, you haven’t touched your lunch," Edward pointed out as he scribbled something on his tablet, "It’s almost four."

Calix didn’t step out of the office to have lunch outside or order food. Thus, Edward took the initiative to get him some bite-sized sandwiches. The food was still untouched, sitting inside a paper box.

Edward wondered if he should just get some protein shake or energy drink for Calix. They would be easier to consume.

Sigh...

"Oh? Are you worried about me being hungry?" Calix raised his brows, teasing the younger man, "You’re quite caring ah, Edward."

Without looking up from the tablet screen, Edward answered with slight mockery in his tone, "Nah. I just don’t want you to fall sick and leave all this work for me."

Calix rolled his eyes, thinking how Edward was as annoying as Evelyn. They were two peas in the pod, able to irritate him with less effort.

After taking a short break and finally having some of the sandwiches, Calix resumed working. He promised Leslie and Calliope that he would arrive by seven-thirty at most.

"Poppy asked Aunt Wendy to teach her how to bake cookies. Please expect some for desserts tonight."

Calix recalled what Leslie told him during their short phone call at noon. It seemed like Calliope would turn into a little pastry chef today.

Aunt Wendy’s presence meant those cookies would be edible and delicious. But, Calix didn’t mind eating burnt ones as long as Calliope was happy.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

The notifications came from Calix’s personal phone instead of the work one. Wondering if the texts came from Leslie, he quickly unlocked the screen.

"...huh? Is he drunk?"

Those words slipped out of Calix’s mouth once he read the messages which unfortunately didn’t come from Leslie.

The sender was Ryken, the one friend who always came and went, often disappearing for months as he pleased.

[Ryken: Yours truly summon you, your wife and your daughter to my not-so-humble abode]

[Ryken: You better come this weekend lest I crash into your house]

[Ryken: Peace]

Calix exhaled a sigh, thinking how serious Ryken sounded this time. His friend, who had just returned to the country, had been asking if he could meet Leslie and Calliope.

"Don’t you want to introduce me to your new family? Sob, sob, you’ve changed, Calix."

"Come on. I’ll cook something delicious for you guys. I’ll make some desserts too ah."

"Or... have you forgotten about me because you have a wife and a child now? How could you! Don’t show off at a single dog like me!"

Calix held back the urge to look for Ryken just to toss him into a dumpster somewhere. This friend of his could be even more dramatic than him.

Frankly, Calix wasn’t actually unwilling to introduce Leslie and Calliope to Ryken. The only obstacle now was how preoccupied all three of them for the past weeks.

Ryken returned to the country when Calix brought Leslie and Calliope to the island. After the end of the trip, a mountain of work waited for Calix to be resolved.

"This weekend, huh? There’s nothing planned yet," hummed Calix.

The previous weekend, the family of three headed to the Xu family’s ancestral home. As for Leslie’s plan on meeting Mrs. Wang, it would take place on the next one.

"Well, let’s just say this first."

Calix swiftly returned a message to Ryken before tossing the phone back on the work desk. His text reached the man within a second.

[Calix: I’ll tell you later.]

First and foremost, Calix wanted to ask Leslie whether she wanted to meet Ryken or not. If his wife was uncomfortable with the idea, he would give excuses to his friend.

’At the very least, I’ll invite him out for a meal.’

Despite not meeting Ryken frequently due to the man’s long travel, Calix cherished him as a good friend. He didn’t simply think that because he had the original Calix’s memories and feelings.

Ryken was an avid traveler who rarely returned to the country. He might be camping in a deep jungle or crossing a vast desert for months.

Yet, Ryken immediately forsook his current plans once he learned about Calix’s accident six years ago. He heard the news on the second week of the latter being in a coma.

Ryken still resumed his travels but, he came back more often. Instead of returning every few months, he shortened his trip to only a few weeks.

Ryken was there when Calix finally emerged from his half-year coma. Aside from Davin and Xander, the former actively encouraged him to get better through the arduous journey of rehab.

"Maybe she will be interested in meeting him," Calix murmured, thinking of telling Leslie about Ryken’s invitation this weekend, "For sure, she and Poppy will love his house."

Chuckling to himself, Calix shook his head in helplessness. Either way, he needed to ask Leslie first.

Well, the man didn’t have any problem when asking his wife because she had long been intrigued by this particular friend of his.
