Chapter 478: The Perpetrator From Six Years Ago
The air in Andrian’s home study felt heavy, thickened with silent rage and old pain. He and Vernon stared unmovingly at Calix, both were shocked by the new discovery.
Calix quietly shifted his eyes from Andrian to Vernon, taking in their looks of bewilderment and suppressed fury. He understood how shocking this conjecture and finding was to them.
After all, he had just brought up the possibility of Nicholas Wu being involved in his accident six years ago. The one that killed the original Calix.
’It’s only guesses now, but... it might be the truth.’
Due to Leslie’s guidance, Calix had come to terms with the reality of this world being fictional. He actually possessed the body belonging to a side character in this novel world.
It was the same as Leslie who took over Charlene’s body.
Even though Leslie’s arrival months ago altered future events, Calix learned that the critical plot points still needed to be resolved.
For example, the return of Nicholas Wu and how he most likely was the mastermind behind the accident that killed the original Calix.
Leslie’s words from the other day resounded in Calix’s mind.
"The accident surely holds something crucial for Calix Xu’s obstacles. The author wouldn’t include it if it wasn’t. Honey, we can’t let go of this chance."
Calix agreed with Leslie despite finding how ridiculously coincidental this discovery was.
Well... didn’t this kind of thing happen often in movies and other stories?
After all, the mastermind behind the accident was nowhere to be found. He might have a hand in drugging the real Calix Xu on that night as well.
Calix inwardly smirked, feeling a mixed sense of awe and helplessness.
’It sounds crazy but... I’ve taken over another person’s life so, nothing should surprise me now.’
Calix remained quiet. Neither Andrian nor Vernon spoke, the faint ticking of the grandfather clock filled the silence. Its cadence sounded ominous today, amplifying the tension.
Andrian was the first person to break the silence, his voice laden with uncertainty. He clasped tightly on the armrests, the veins protruding on the back of his hands.
"Calix, do you really suspect him... as the one who almost killed you six years ago?"
Compared to Andrian’s uncertain tone, Calix’s expressed his belief as he calmly replied.
"There’s no concrete evidence yet but, he returned a week before the accident. Whether it was a coincidence or not, he left the next morning after the banquet I attended. The same morning when I got into the car crash. This worth a deeper investigation."
Andrian, who was renowned for his composure, let out a measured sigh. He found no fault in Calix’s explanation, the reason why the young man suspected Nicholas.
Six years ago, Calix made an appearance at a banquet hosted by Andrian’s friend. The middle-aged man was abroad with his wife, leading their son to attend the party on their behalf.
Never once did Andrian and Harper expect to receive the gruesome news of Calix being in a car crash. They were also shocked to discover the vehicle was tampered with.
What happened was so obvious.
Someone attempted to take Calix’s life. Fortunately, the man survived the biggest obstacles before slowly recovering.
If not...
Andrian’s forehead was marred with creases of frustration and anger. He still remembered how helpless and aggravated he was when no credible clues were found.
As if the perpetrator vanished into thin air after planning such a crime.
Vernon glanced from Andrian to Calix, his taut jaw hardened his rough facial features. He couldn’t believe what his younger brother had just relayed to them but...
His instinct mirrored his younger brother’s opinion.
"Dad, Calix’s right. We should investigate further."
Vernon knew how sharp Calix was. His younger brother wouldn’t bring this issue up without weighing in on everything.
"..."
Andrian’s frown deepened, inwardly understanding and agreeing with his sons. Both Calix and Vernon seemed adamant about unearthing deeper into this finding.
"Yes. Let’s find out more."
Andrian breathed out, painstakingly trying to restrain the boiling fury at his core. Clenching his hands into fists, he reminded himself not to lose any sound judgment during this crucial time.
Calix and Vernon nodded, relieved to see their father sharing the same view as them.
"You guys should go now," said Andrian, looking more exhausted as the minutes passed by, "Let’s talk again later."
"Yes, Dad."
Calix and Vernon swiftly rose to their feet, respecting Andrian’s wish to be alone right now. The two brothers headed to the door, their footsteps heavy on the polished floor.
The door was closed with a faint thud.
Sitting still on the couch, Andrian’s mind was weighed with countless thoughts. What Calix had just relayed to him and Vernon reopened the old wounds, forcing him to revisit the painful memories of the past.
"Why... just why this happen?"
Andrian thought knowing the bastard child of his deceased father aiming for their family was already surprising enough.
Turned out... there was something more!
It was highly likely that the same bastard tried to kill his own child! The one who forced his second son into a half-year long coma years ago.
Andrian exhaled another long sigh, his feelings conflicted between rage and remorse.
’Is it karma? Because I ignored a helpless child back then?’
Andrian felt sorry for the young Nicholas back then despite being thoroughly disappointed with his father. After all, his half-brother was as young as his own children.
Yet, Andrian chose not to step in to help. He let his father, now deceased, handle his young mistress and child. The former was more focused on supporting his heartbroken mother.
Old Madam Xu might forgive her husband’s betrayal but, her heart still shattered into pieces. Andrian couldn’t bear to leave his mother alone.
The kindhearted woman told her adulterous husband to provide care for the mistress and the illegitimate child.
’No. Mother can’t even know about this.’
His elderly mother became more sickly these days. He didn’t want the frail old lady to be burdened with this issue.
But...
What if she ended up learning about it?
