Chapter 477: The Family He Yearned For
The next morning, Calix brought Leslie and Calliope to the Xu family’s ancestral home. The ambiance was warm and cozy as the little one continued talking from the backseat.
"Mama! Poppy think this look like a tiny horn ah."
"Poppy will give this pink one to Mia. Mia love pink like Poppy ah."
"Ohhh! This color look like sunset!"
A happy little dumpling couldn’t help but chirp endlessly about her precious seashell collection, the one she wanted to share with her loved ones soon. She had been thinking about which shell to give to whom.
Calliope admired the colorful seashells through the transparent lid of the new box gifted by Calix. She held the container with both hands, placing it on her lap.
As always, Calliope didn’t forget to bring Mimo along. She asked Calix to strap the crochet fox toy beside her. Mimo sat on the backseat, buckled by the seatbelt.
Soft chuckles came from the front seat. Leslie turned to look at Calliope while Calix glanced through the rearview mirror. Both of them wore the same fond smile on their lips.
"Your Great-Grandma, Mia and everyone will love the seashells as much as you do, Poppy," said Leslie, her words spoken with affection for her young daughter.
"Wow~ My buttercup has indeed found great treasure ah," Calix chimed in, shifting his eyes back to the road ahead, "Don’t forget to share your stories about our trip, okay?"
The husband and wife shared the same sentiment. They enjoyed seeing and hearing how excited their little daughter was, also feeling proud of her eagerness to share her treasure with her loved ones.
Giggles bubbled up from Calliope’s small mouth, her face beaming with delight.
"Hehehe~ Okay, Papa and Mama. Poppy will tell Mia, Great-Grandma and everyone!"
Once again Calix and Leslie chuckled, entertained by their daughter’s enthusiasm. The echoes of their laughter harmonized with Calliope’s giggles.
As Calix continued driving, Calliope’s chatter continuously filled the car. Her voice expressed her happiness, she shared her plans in detail.
The husband and wife exchanged fond glances, savoring the joy and innocence of their little dumpling’s excitement. This simple car ride would be another one of their mundane yet precious memory.
Soon, two little girls sat together on the carpet in the lounge of the ancestral home while the adults were seated on the couches.
Calliope scattered the seashells on the coffee table, earning ’Ohhh’ and ’Ahhh’ from Amelia who admired the colorful and natural souvenirs from the beach.
"I’m surprised Poppy didn’t bring back a truckload of seashells," said Andrian jokingly, his eyes softened at the sight of his little granddaughters playing together.
"Hahaha! Calix and Leslie have to bring Poppy to more beaches to get that much," Harper chimed in, her voice imbued with laughter.
Old Madam Xu, despite feeling slightly weak today, regained a little more energy as she gathered with her loved ones. She didn’t talk much after greeting the family of three’s arrival.
"Great-Grandma," Calliope stood up from the floor, bringing a few shells to Old Madam Xu, "Great-Grandma can have these ah. See? This one is the biggest."
"Oh~ Thank you, my dear," Old Madam Xu gladly accepted the shells, her smile fainter than usual, "You’re so thoughtful of everyone."
"Hehehe~"
Calliope grinned, her cheeks flushed red as Old Madam Xu patted her little head. She quickly returned to the coffee table, excited to show more to Amelia.
Calix discreetly glanced at Old Madam Xu, seeing her lacking her usual jovial spirit. He knew that his grandmother was quite sickly these days because of her old age but, seeing her like that worried him.
’I hope Grandma’s health won’t worsen.’
Despite regaining his memories as Axel, Calix’s love and affection for the Xu family members didn’t go away. Instead, his feelings toward them were strengthened.
Axel Liu was an orphan. Growing up, he didn’t have many people he could care for and rely on until he met a lady named Leslie Song.
As their love grew, they promised to be each other’s pillar and build a family together. Unfortunately, fate was cruel to them.
Aside from Leslie, the Xu family was the family Calix, as Axel, yearned to have before. He would continue to love and protect them to the utmost of his ability.
’I need to talk to Dad and Big Brother soon. About... Nicholas’ recent movements.’
Aside from Edward and Calix’s security team, only Leslie knew what he had just learned about Nicholas the other day. It was quite shocking.
But... Leslie’s guess was more appalling to Calix. Despite how too absurdly coincidental it was, he believed he should take her conjectures into account.
Neither Andrian nor Vernon knew about this yet because Calix notified everyone to keep it under wraps for now. He would tell his father and elder brother himself.
’Today. We have to talk today.’
Calix’s silent gaze landed on the joyful Andrian before moving to Vernon. His elder brother, always a sharp person, noticed his eyes.
Vernon raised his thick brows, mouthing ’What’ to Calix. The latter shook his head before tapping on his wristwatch twice. His elder brother understood what it meant.
They should have a private meeting soon.
Vernon nodded once, pretending there was no silent exchange between him and Calix. The latter also did the same. Their attention returned to their daughters.
At noon, the children and adults had lunch together. More lively chatter filled the dining room until they dispersed to their respective destinations later.
A tired Leslie headed to Calix’s childhood bedroom while Calliope followed Amelia to Old Madam Xu’s chamber as usual. Her husband gathered with his father and elder brother for another discreet discussion about Nicholas Wu.
Despite being worried, Leslie placed her trust in Calix. The man’s security team secretly monitored Nicholas’ movements, including digging further into his background.
’Still, I was surprised. I never expected that he returned to the country six years ago.’
The fact was discovered when the security team investigated the years when Nicholas lived abroad, especially when he was still in the gang.
Upon learning the news, a frightening chill ghosted down Leslie’s spine. Even without consulting Mimo, she believed what came to her mind at that time held some truth.
Six years ago... the original Calix was involved in a premeditated car accident.
But, the Xu family failed to trace the mastermind behind the plot.
Perhaps...
Halting in her tracks, Leslie tightened the grip on the cane. She bit her lower lip hard, hoping Nicholas’ deception would be exposed soon.
’Mimo.’
Leslie inwardly called Mimo, knowing the crochet fox toy was with Calliope. As always, Mimo answered her telepathically.
Are you worried about Axel’s discussion with them?
’...yes.’
Once the terrifying guess crossed Leslie’s mind, she immediately sought Mimo, desperately needing the answer. Calix also wondered if they could get the truth about the situation from the crochet fox toy.
Unfortunately, Mimo’s answer was vague.
You’re closer to the truth. Trust your instinct.
Exhaling a sigh, Leslie uttered, her voice a low hum in the quiet hallway.
"Trust our heart, en, Mimo?"
Yes, Leslie. You’re near the end of the plotline now. You won’t be bound to the world’s restrictions any longer.
Leslie nodded softly, believing in Mimo despite still feeling uneasy.
