Chapter 472: Both Identities Belonged to Him
’I am both Axel and Calix.’
The thought crossed Calix’s mind as soon as he woke up the next morning. Unlike last night, the surrealism of this situation didn’t affect him as much.
Lowering his gaze, Calix saw Leslie still sleeping soundly, nestling her head on his chest. The warmth of her breath filtered through the light fabric of his pajama with every rise and fall of her chest.
Calix carefully adjusted his posture, allowing Leslie to be more comfortable in his arms. He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall, seeing the time had just hit six-fifteen in the morning.
’Seems like we’ve missed the sunrise.’
The sun had long ascended from the horizon but, his lady was still sleeping. He didn’t have the heart to stir her awake, knowing she most likely needed more rest after what happened last night.
After all, he woke her up in the witching hour because of his nightmare.
Calix gently brushed his fingertips across Leslie’s bangs. A soft smile hung on his lips as the feelings of happiness and contentment overflowed in his heart.
Finally, Calix understood why more often than not, he felt as if he was a stranger in his own body. It turned out it was the truth.
He was indeed a stranger, occupying the original Calix’s body. The young man met his demise on the night of the accident[01].
Though unfortunate, Mimo mentioned that the original soul had begun living in another world.
Exhaling a soft sigh, Calix inadvertently recalled the moment before he, as Axel, met his own death. No longer suppressed, the memory became crystal clear in his mind.
Calix remembered the intense pain that struck him as he was stuck between the rocks with his limbs twisting in unnatural angles. He believed his whole body would frighten anyone who saw him[02].
The beauty of the autumn foliage seemed to offer him the last semblance of peace when he was on the verge of dying.
And...
Instead of worrying about him dying, his concern was entirely about leaving her behind. After all, they only had each other.
’I lost my memories... as the price I’ve to pay to reunite with them.’
Before he breathed his last, Mimo suddenly appeared. Calix finally knew why the voice, although he had only heard it once, sounded so familiar.
Do you want to reunite with your lover?
What if I lead her to you in the distant future? Across the dimensions?
He, as Axel, immediately grasped at the offer. He was willing to do anything just to meet her again.
By sacrificing your memories. Once you two meet again, you won’t remember her but, your feelings will recall the love you have for her.
Only when you meet the requirements needed, will you remember your memories again.
The last thing Calix remembered was Mimo touching his forehead with its paw. His eyesight eventually turned black before he floated into nothingness.
Until he woke up on a hospital bed.
Calix had no problem adjusting to the original Calix’s memories as if those were his own. Although sometimes he felt weird in the body, the sensation didn’t bother him much.
He had continued living as Calix Xu for over six years now but, he also acknowledged his core belonged to Axel Liu.
Both identities were his now.
"En..."
The light mumble that came from Leslie, followed by her movements, pulled Calix out of his trance. His smile softened at the sight of her blinking her eyes, trying to wake up.
"Still sleepy, my love?"
Calix gently caressed Leslie’s face before pushing her bangs away, revealing her face still laden with drowsiness.
"...morning, honey," Leslie closed her eyes again, seemingly lured to continue her sleep, "When did you wake up?"
"Just now," Calix dipped his head in, brushing his lips atop Leslie’s head, "Get some more sleep. I’ll wake you up before seven."
"...okay," Leslie yawned, expressing her lingering drowsiness, "Wake me up... before seven... We should go back and have breakfast with Poppy."
"Hehe, as we should, sweetheart," Calix let out a throaty chuckle. Tracing circles on one of her shoulder, he whispered, "Lest our darling daughter will be sulky with us."
Leslie’s faint laughter was the last thing Calix heard before she eventually fell asleep again. He continued laying on the bed with her, savoring the tranquility of the morning with his beloved.
If Leslie was comfortable with it, Calix would slowly ask about her life raising Calliope alone.
Knowing he couldn’t turn back time and be there for her when Calliope was still a baby, he would never let her be alone in navigating her life again.
Calix earnestly hoped this time around, he and Leslie could grow old together.
How nice wouldn’t it be?
Perhaps, they would have more children in the future. Of course, only if she was willing.
They would raise Calliope and her siblings, watching them grow while they remained by each other’s side.
Yeah, that would be nice.
As the clock continued ticking, the time eventually reached a little over seven. Calix finally roused Leslie awake, without forgetting to shower her face with little kisses.
"Wake up, my love. Our little dumpling is waiting for us."
Leslie chuckled as she tried to free herself from Calix, "Hehe~ It’s ticklish ah."
Securing his arms tightly around her waist, Calix asked, his eyes flickering with mischief, "Should we bathe together? I’ll give you a massage as we’re at it."
A lovely shade of pink flushed on Leslie’s cheeks. She couldn’t help but think how much more devilish Calix had become after their first lovemaking last night.
But...
Tilting up her chin, Leslie locked her eyes into Calix’s, noticing the suppressed desire in them. She grazed her fingertip on his chest as words ladened with shyness slipped between her lips.
"Just a massage? I would love to do more with you. Well... I feel better now."
Calix blinked, seemingly having to process what Leslie had just said to him. The next thing that happened was him hurriedly carrying her to the washroom.
