Chapter 471: The Things That Were Left Unspoken
The clock continued ticking on the wall, echoing faintly in the quiet night air.
Leslie and Calix had ceased crying, but the atmosphere around them was still tainted by the conflicting weight of their sadness, regrets, and gratitude.
Still sitting on the couch, Calix and Leslie nestled in each other’s arms. He let her rest her head on his chest. The echoes of her cries from earlier still lingered in his mind, prodding into his heart.
Leslie’s half-lidded, swollen eyes blankly stared at the buttons of Calix’s pajama shirt.
Lifting one hand, she placed her palm on his chest, feeling its rise and fall. She leaned more toward him as he kissed atop her head.
"...honey," Leslie parted her lips, her voice hoarse from her previous crying, "What... what do you want me... to call you now? Were you upset... when I called you... Axel just now?"
Calix’s eyes, brimming with concern, wandered to Leslie. He scooped her up before placing her on his lap. She tightened her arms around his waist as he ever so gently stroked her back.
"I didn’t," responded Calix after a short period of silence. He tried to keep his voice clear and steady, "I might have lived as Calix Xu for the past six years... without any recollections of my previous life, but... my soul still belongs to Axel Liu."
Despite having just received the forgotten memories of his first life, Calix viewed the issue with a clear head.
He wouldn’t ever deny the time he lived as Axel Liu before being given another chance of life as Calix Xu.
Leslie unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief as her tensed nerves slowly untangled their knots. More words flowed out of her mouth, forming into a question.
"Do you have more questions for me? I will answer them the best I can."
For the first time after being swept into this chaos, Calix let out a chuckle. He loosened his arms around Leslie’s frame and pulled away slightly, just enough to look at her face.
"I do, my love. I have so many things I wanna ask you."
Calix started, a tiny glint of happiness and anticipation flickered in his reddened eyes.
He wanted to know the days of her pregnancy and when their little bundle of joy graced this world with her presence.
He also wished to hear the days of her raising their child, learning the depth of her perseverance and love.
Yet, only if she was willing. He understood if those memories would only sadden her to be looked back on.
Leslie quietly looked into Calix’s orbs, savoring the semblance of peace she saw on his countenance.
It seemed like the raging storm in her beloved had calmed down. She was inwardly glad to see him smiling genuinely again.
Unaware of what Leslie was thinking, Calix continued speaking, his voice a low murmur in the tranquility of the night.
"I want to know about you and our child. But, let’s take this slow, en? It’ll make us both happy and sad, sweetheart. I also believe you have questions for me."
Understanding Calix’s concern, Leslie nodded softly. She cupped his face, smiling upon seeing a tiny version on his lips.
"Yes, I also have questions for you. We’ll take it slow, en?"
Calix’s smile softened. Slowly dipping his head in, he seized Leslie’s lips with his. Joy soared from his heart when she moved her hands from his face to his neck, pulling him closer.
She wanted him as how he did to her.
From gently nibbling on Leslie’s lower lip, Calix prodded his tongue in, seeking her own. He easily deepened the kiss as she parted her lips, submitting herself to him.
"Haa... my love..."
Lowering Leslie to the couch, Calix lightly bit her right earlobe, eliciting a soft whimper from her. He smiled as he sensed her melting in his embrace.
"I want you, sweetheart. I do," Calix whispered next to Leslie’s ear, his voice thickened with unbridled passion, "But, let’s save it for another time, en? I don’t want to keep you awake until sunrise."
No matter how tempted Calix was to make love with Leslie again tonight, her well-being was still his priority.
Calix drilled every advice and precaution given by Dr. Mo into his mind, fearing he would push his wife over the limits. He had to be extra careful, especially during their first lovemaking.
"Y-yes..."
Leslie bit her lower lip, feeling her entire face flushed red. Despite wanting Calix as much as he did with her, she was also aware of her state.
The lovers continued lying on the couch, taking some time to calm down. They resorted to light pecking while still cuddling.
The fiery red passion that overtook them just now slowly fizzled out, replaced with light pink bubbles.
Calix finally moved, carrying Leslie along with him, "Let’s get some more sleep. Our little one won’t be happy if we return to the villa late."
"Hehe, you’re right."
The husband and wife returned to the bedroom, feeling better than before. Huddling on the bed, their legs tangled under the blanket.
The faint melody of the rolling waves kissing the shore permeated the bedroom, further alleviating the lingering uneasiness in the air.
"Good night, my love. Please know that I am grateful to you... in this life and the one before."
Calix brushed his lips on Leslie’s forehead, his voice as soft as a feather, tickling her heart.
"I feel the same. Sleep well, honey."
Leslie’s response was met with a low hum from Calix. Feeling the warmth of his embrace, she closed her eyes, willing herself to sleep.
’Thank you... thank you.’
Chanting her utmost gratitude in her heart, Leslie was relieved to know Calix didn’t reject his previous life as Axel. She couldn’t help but worry about the possibility, fearing his first death would traumatize him.
So many things were still left unspoken between them but, she believed they could tackle everything.
Including the obstacle in the form of Nicholas Wu.
