Chapter 470: Who They Actually Are

Was this the moment he finally learned the truth?

The thought crossed Leslie’s mind once she registered the question that came from Calix. From that inquiry alone she knew the inevitable had come true[01].

Calix had finally remembered his previous life as Axel.

Leslie was not entirely sure how Calix received his memories back but, she believed it might be due to their first lovemaking.

After all, they experienced the most intimate connection they could have between them. It was not just a simple physical intimacy.

The connection they experienced was beautiful, transcending to something deeply spiritual and emotional.

’He knew. He finally knew.’

Taking in a deep breath, Leslie tried to calm the turbulence of emotions within her. The storms of emotions raged against her heart, trying to break her apart but...

Her composure, albeit in the midst of breaking down, still remained intact.

From the moment Leslie knew that nothing could stop Calix from regaining his previous life’s memories as Axel, she had been preparing herself.

Leslie didn’t want to break down in front of Calix when he most likely would be shrouded with confusion and panic himself.

Squeezing his hands, Leslie hoped her little action could ease Calix. Fear clouded his gaze as he waited for her answer.

"Yes. My real name and identity is Leslie Song."

Leslie’s voice rang audibly in the living room. Each of her words, laced with certainty, reached Calix whose eyes widened in shock.

"Y-you... you’re really... her. You’re really... my Leslie..."

Tears of despair pooled in Calix’s eyes but, he held back from letting them escape. He felt too ashamed to cry when Leslie did everything she could to restrain her own composure from falling apart.

"Yes... I’m your Leslie, Axel."

Letting out soft chuckles, Leslie cupped one side of Calix’s face. Her voice, albeit trembling, carried the earnest love and affection she had for him.

"Leslie... L-Leslie..."

Unable to take in all the emotions warring inside him, Calix pulled Leslie in his arms. His raspy gasps fanned hot breath to her neck as no coherent words came out of his mouth.

He hadn’t heard anyone calling him with that name for so long. If not for that dream tonight, he also wouldn’t remember anything yet.

Leslie quietly returned the embrace. The quick pounding of Calix’s heart reached her ears. She ran one hand across his back, hoping he could take in the surprising revelation.

Considering the past events, Leslie believed Calix met Mimo in his dream. She was unsure how their encounter be. The only certain thing was he had remembered his past life.

It was just... Leslie knew it was beyond hard for Calix to fully accept everything within a short time. After all, he had been living as Calix Xu for the past six years.

The melody of the waves crashing on the shore sounded faint under her beloved’s rapid heartbeat.

Leslie didn’t say anything as she hoped the silence would bring peace back to the despaired Calix. A tiny smile curled on her lips as she heard how his heartbeat gradually returned to its regular rhythmic pace.

"Did you dream of Mimo, honey?"

Leslie’s question made Calix flinch. He was frozen for a moment before he let out a muffled hum.

"...yes. I met... Mimo. And..."

Pulling away from Leslie, Calix grasped both sides of her arms. His reddened eyes gazed at her from head to toe. Seeing the serene smile on her lips eased him into speaking.

"Leslie, my love..." Calix lowered his hands from Leslie’s arms, once again holding her hands, "It’s so... surreal and... I found it hard to believe but... yes... I knew who we were. Truly."

Also, he made an oath with the crocheted fox toy before he died.

Calix paused for a moment as his mind inadvertently recalled the fragments he watched in the dreamscape, including...

"I saw you after my death. I saw you and our daughter... alone. And... what led you to come here."

Leslie’s heart suspended beating for a second. A surge of sadness spiraled from her heart, almost loosening the restraint she put over her composure.

There was only one meaning behind Calix’s words. He knew or saw the moment she and their daughter breathed their last in their previous world.

"You were so strong... so, so strong..."

Calix hitched a breath. The pain in his heart flared to his entire body, making it hard for him to continue speaking.

"...I’m sorry, my love. I’m sorry... for leaving you and our daughter alone... I’m sorry..."

"N-no! It’s not your fault!" Leslie hurriedly shook her head, horrified, "Please... It’s never your fault."

Calix bit his lower lip. The tears he had been holding back finally ran down his face, tracing the previous trail. Fighting against his sadness, he forced himself to resume.

"Still... I left you when you needed me the most... and... how scared were you... when you thought you had lost our daughter too..."

"T-that... I..."

Unable to refute Calix, Leslie lowered her face, feeling defeated all of a sudden. She hoped to shield her fear from being seen by his discerning eyes.

Once again she was brought in his arms.

His warm embrace was tighter, more solid this time, giving her a sense of security she needed the most right at this moment.

"You’ve worked hard... and remained so strong, my love... I’m so grateful... for meeting you again... for meeting our daughter for the first time..."

Calix’s voice rang so close to Leslie, each word traveling to her heart.

Without saying anything, she grasped the back of his shirt. She chewed her lower lip, swallowing the sobs almost threatening to slip out from her mouth.

Calix shut his eyes, trying to get himself to stop crying. The little shivers he felt from Leslie pierced his heart with more ache for he knew her strong mask was on the verge of crumbling.

"Thank you. Thank you, Leslie... my love... I’m eternally grateful for you. I... I can’t wrap my head around this yet, but... now that we’re together again... Please... rely on me. You’ve... been so strong by yourself..."

Leslie nodded a few times, choking back on her sobs. Pulling away from Calix slightly, she let their teary eyes collide.

"Yes... Let’s... let’s not waste our second chance miracle..."

A smile curled on Calix’s lips. Gently cupping Leslie’s teary face, he kissed her forehead, once again grateful for this blessing.
