Chapter 468: To Retrieve What Had Been Lost
’This feels... oddly familiar.’
Sweeping his gaze across the surroundings, Calix only saw a white void. He was there, standing alone with nothing else in sight.
The void extended far beyond what his eyes could see. Not even a little object was there.
Calix walked ahead, his step slow yet measured. He hoped to catch a glimpse of something but, only a blank canvas surrounded him.
Despite the uncanny situation, strangely, no fear crept into Calix’s heart. He felt a sense of ease instead.
’What’s happening? I remember I went to sleep with Leslie.’
The memory of the candlelight dinner, followed by the intimate moment they shared tonight, resurfaced in Calix’s mind. He couldn’t help but wonder whether Leslie was sleeping well or not.
His beloved drifted to sleep before him because he couldn’t help but stay awake longer to look at her serene countenance. He loved the feeling of having her in his arms.
’This... feels a little bit like when I had those dreams.’
The thought crossed Calix’s mind as he walked ahead without any aim. He didn’t see the familiar little apartment or the neighborhood but, his heart seemed to tell him that he was right.
Calix hadn’t dreamed of the pair of lovers after that night in Zurich[01]. No new dreams came to him despite he fulfilled the conditions he thought of.
Halting in his tracks, Calix quietly looked down to his feet. He took a moment to ponder, thinking back to the weird dreams he received surrounding the unknown couple.
And...
The new sensation he got during his time in Zurich.
Lifting his chin, Calix looked above him. He parted his lips, letting words flow out with certainty to the void sky.
"Are you there, Mimo?"
Calix didn’t know what led him to call for Calliope’s crochet fox toy but, a little part of his heart pushed him for it. His voice was laced with confidence instead of doubt.
A swirl of red light suddenly appeared at the blank spot Calix was staring at, and...
Poof!
Mimo materialized.
Calix blinked, sensing his body shuddered despite anticipating the red crochet fox toy to appear. He unconsciously grasped his hands into fists, feeling a slight coldness flare to his entire body.
Are you curious why you’re here?
Calix flinched. The crochet toy’s voice reminded him of a child.
And...
Its voice sounded familiar. Where had he heard it before?
The back of Calix’s mind nagged at him as if telling him not to fear this uncanny situation. Thus, he buried the question. More important things awaited him.
Shaking his head, Calix inwardly laughed at himself. He wanted to treat this moment as another weird dream but, something felt a little off.
Instead of entertaining his thoughts, Calix decided to be upfront. Staring at Mimo, he asked, "Why am I here?"
Calix was certain Mimo knew the reason he was in this dreamscape. He watched the crochet toy descending from above before it floated right opposite his face.
To retrieve what has been lost and to recall what you’ve forgotten.
"...huh?"
Before Calix could ask anything further, a giant gust of wind surged through the white void, engulfing the entirety of the blankness. He almost fell backward as the harsh breeze almost knocked him out of his footing.
"What the... argh!"
Calix almost fell on his knees, the tide rushing into his head in a rapid current. Holding his head with both hands, his face losing color and scrunching up in pain before...
The ache was gone as if it was never there.
"What did just..."
Calix stared blankly at Mimo, silently pleading for the answer. Once all the waves settled in his mind, he finally could say those were a current showing someone’s life.
And...
They reminded him of those dreams.
Let me guide you through them.
Flying closer to Calix, Mimo tapped one of its paws on his forehead. A tiny glow radiated from the touch before the rays expanded until they disappeared inside the light.
When Calix came to his senses, he found himself floating in another space, surrounded by fragments projecting videolike recording. His stomach churned as he looked around the pieces.
Mimo perched on top of Calix’s head as the crochet toy pointed to the fragments. Its childlike voice echoed in the quiet space.
Look at them. The lady and the child.
Blinking, Calix’s gaze zeroed in on the projected recording. His eyes widened once he realized who the lady mentioned by Mimo just now.
"S-she... Wasn’t she... the one I dreamed before?"
The woman from those dreams?!
Mimo’s reply confirmed Calix’s suspicions.
Yes.
Throughout the time Calix remained in the space with Mimo, he watched the televised images of the fragments. He only saw the lady who seemed a little older than he remembered.
’That’s her... alone.’
Her lover was not by her side. Calix’s heart sank as he recalled the terrifying dream of the man dying.
Even though months had passed, he still remembered the moment vividly[02].
The man’s fear of the unknown, regret of leaving her alone behind and his wish to be reunited with her again; everything felt too real — as if he experienced it himself.
It seemed like the fragments showed the lady’s life after losing her lover. She was accompanied by a little child who shared the same resemblances as the lady and her lover.
The child... was their daughter. He just knew it in his heart.
Calix watched the moment the lady grieved her lover’s early death, including the hardship she endured because she chose to raise the child when she had little to no support.
The lady worked thrice as hard as most people because of her situation but, seeing how determined she was raised conflicted emotions in Calix.
All this time, you don’t know who she is, don’t you?
Mimo’s question made Calix flinch. He abruptly looked at the crochet fox toy, colliding his gaze with its beady eyes.
"...you knew, don’t you?"
Calix’s voice was barely a whisper. For some reason, he both dreaded and anticipated it.
Mimo’s voice was steady, throwing questions back to Calix.
How about you? Don’t you already have the answers by now?
Calix sensed shivers ghosting down his spine. He stiffly returned his gaze to the fragments showing the lady and the child.
"L-Leslie and... Ca... Calliope?"
Yes. Your assumption is correct.
Another wave of headache hit Calix. He almost stumbled on his steps despite floating in the space.
Why...
Why those names...
And, why... he somehow knew... even though the lady and the child looked nothing like his beloved wife and daughter?
"What else... what else have I forgotten? How..."
His voice trembling, Calix stiffly turned to look at Mimo, his eyes glazing with unshed tears without him realizing it.
The crochet fox toy had moved from his head, now floating on the spot next to him.
I’ll grant you a grace. What you’ve forgotten and the answers to your questions... you’ll receive them.
Another ray was emitted from Mimo’s paw. The tiny ball of light rushed to Calix’s forehead, once again swallowing him in its expanding glow.
Everything fell into places, reminding him of the life he had forgotten.
Of the time when he was Axel Liu.
