Chapter 441: As If They Never Existed
Instead of worrying about the future reappearance of his estranged half-uncle, Calix’s attention was more on comforting Leslie. He silently wondered how long had she been waiting to tell him about this issue.
Perhaps, she received the vision right after he left for abroad. Or, it happened earlier but, she didn’t want to distract him from his upcoming business trip.
Nevertheless, Leslie was troubled about the thought of the man’s reappearance. She was clearly upset because she didn’t have much information about him.
"I’ll tell you more... if I learn anything new about him."
Leslie firmly made the promise, despite Calix not wanting the oath to add further to her uneasiness. He was already content with the key detail—the man’s name—he got from her.
Gently stroking the sleeping Leslie’s back, Calix quietly recalled their conversation earlier. He was grateful to see her finally asleep after being tormented by her tense nerves.
’Nicholas Wu. I don’t really remember it but... I think that woman’s surname is Wu.’
Narrowing his eyes, Calix reluctantly opened the box of his distant memories, stored in the back of his mind.
The woman and the boy first appeared when Calix was around ten years old. More than two decades had passed.
’He should be older than me but, younger than Vernon.’
Calix believed this Nicholas Wu might be in his mid-30s. Finding this man would be difficult due to his unknown whereabouts, especially if he changed his name.
Furthermore, Calix never bothered to know about the mother and son’s existence. Despite being young, he knew their appearance hurt his grandmother.
’Forget it. I’ll start the search soon, lest he approaches my family without any alert.’
Calix planned to talk to Edward about this issue first before reaching out to his deceased grandfather’s close aide. The latter was responsible for his grandfather’s private matters.
’And... maybe I’ll ask Dad too. I can’t risk asking Grandma. She’ll be sad.’
With Andrian’s assistance, Calix believed he could pinpoint Nicholas Wu’s whereabouts. Perhaps, the man was already somewhere nearby.
As for his grandmother... bringing up the mistress and her son would just reopen her old wounds.
Calix never wanted to do that. He still remembered how his grandmother tried to take the mother and son under her wings even though they were the proof of his grandfather’s betrayal.
The night was peaceful outside the white manor. Its calmness was a contrast to the brewing storm in Calix’s heart.
He told himself not to make any hasty movements. To prevent himself from blindly falling into any traps, he better plan everything accordingly.
"...en..."
Blinking, Calix glanced at the sleeping Leslie. Her lips moved but, no audible words came out. He stifled his laughter, afraid of waking her up.
Calix’s smiling lips had a hint of relief. He lifted one hand, softly brushing his fingers across her bangs. His fleeting touch caused her eyelashes to flutter as if she was stirred awake.
’No one will hurt us, sweetheart. I’ll protect you and our daughter.’
Calix pulled Leslie closer to him, seeking her warmth to calm the lingering doubt in his heart and mind. He smiled faintly when she subconsciously patted his back.
The touch bestowed him with the calm reassurance he yearned for.
Neither Calix nor Leslie touched on the issue regarding Nicholas Wu again throughout the entire weekend.
The husband and wife tacitly agreed to focus on having quality family time with their daughter before work resumed next week.
"Papa! Papa! Chocolate museum!"
Calliope didn’t stop mentioning the promised trip to the chocolate museum. Calix calmed the eager little one, saying they would go there the next weekend.
Leslie, Aunt Wendy and Mrs. Su teased the little one, earning laughter from the excited Calliope. She really looked forward to their family’s visit to the chocolate museum.
Once Monday arrived, Calix brought up the issue to Edward after the morning meeting. The younger man was surprised to learn about Nicholas Wu.
Standing opposite Calix, Edward’s narrowed eyes had traces of suspicions. He stared at his boss’ rigid countenance, expressing the gravity of this matter.
"Boss, are we really going to look for... that woman and her son? After all these years?" asked Edward once more, his tone laced with doubts.
As Calix’s right-hand man, Edward knew about the mother and son despite never seeing them personally. He didn’t expect to her his boss trying to look for them after decades.
"I need to find them no matter what," Calix reiterated what he had spoken to Edward earlier. Worries were etched on his furrowing brows, "I received a tip. Nicholas Wu, the son, might try to ruin us. It’s better to be safe than sorry."
"...pardon? A tip?" Edward blinked, unable to grasp what Calix had just said, "From whom did you get the tip? Is it trustable?"
Calix exhaled a sigh. Knocking two fingers on the desk, he uttered, "Unfortunately, I can’t tell you more than that. Get ready to look into that man. Whether he has changed his name or his whole identity, we don’t know yet. Hence, the need to investigate."
Edward was dumbfounded. He didn’t know what kind of tip Calix received but, he was still doubtful over everything.
But...
Edward wouldn’t question Calix any longer. He believed there was something that made his boss serious about this issue.
"Understood, Boss Xu. I’ll start looking into them," Edward nodded once being being reminded of something, "Then, how about the couple? We haven’t found any clues about them yet. Should we continue or postpone the search?"
Calix pursed his lips, thinking of the couple he often saw in those uncanny dreams. No matter how long his team had been searching for them, they couldn’t unearth even the simplest clue.
As if... they never existed.
"Call the search off."
"...yes?" Edward raised his brows, "You want to end the search permanently?"
"Yes," Calix replied, his voice firm, "Direct our resources to look for the mother and son. As for the couple, I won’t look for them anymore."
"Understood, Boss."
Perhaps, this was for the best. Somehow, he believed he would get the answers even without looking for the couple.
