Chapter 440: Is He Coming Back?
Lying on the bed, Leslie silently looked at the windows. The silvery glow of the moonlight sneaked into the room, casting long shadows on the walls.
Calix was still inside the washroom, brushing his teeth and washing his face. Leslie had just come from her bedroom. Brimming with uneasiness, she quietly waited on the bed.
’Tell him tonight no matter what, Leslie.’
Leslie fidgeted with her nightgown, worrying about bringing up the unpleasant memory in Calix’s past. Even though his soul belonged to Axel, possessing Calix’s older recollections meant those were his as well.
Staring from the washroom to the ceiling, Leslie tried to soothe her inner turmoil. She knew Calix wouldn’t doubt her claims but, it was still hard to stay calm.
They need to locate where Nicholas Wu was quickly. Leslie believed that man had started lurking in the shadows, patiently waiting to bring Calix and his family to their downfall.
Mimo was still restricted from exposing everything to Leslie but learning about Nicholas’ existence and incoming appearance was already a great help.
The crochet fox toy mentioned giving Leslie other details but, it was not the right time yet. Mimo itself was unsure when would it be.
In the original storyline, Calix didn’t know about Nicholas until it was too late. It was a reason why he made a narrow escape before returning victoriously.
The male lead, Xander displayed the prowess of his power by backing Calix. Nicholas’ revenge was crushed by the weight of Xander’s force and Calix’s tenacity.
"Sweetheart."
Calix’s tall figure emerged from the washroom. His voice pulled Leslie out of her trance. His smiling countenance greeted her eyesight as soon as he reappeared.
"Honey..."
Leslie quietly crawled to Calix once he got into the bed, seeking his comfort. The man let out a chuckle, seemingly amused to see her being clingy.
"En... My sweetheart smells so sweet."
Bringing Leslie into his arms, Calix buried his face in the crook of her neck. Hidden by her right shoulder, no one saw his smile was laced with worries.
Calix wondered what kind of vision Leslie received recently. He was more intrigued because it was related to him this time.
But...
Calix wished to calm Leslie first, thinking she had been troubled for a few days now due to their separation. He could tell she was afraid – for him.
Pulling his head away, Calix looked into Leslie’s face, finding how evident her worries were. He traced his thumb on her face while securing her waist with his other hand. Their legs entangled on the bed.
Leslie’s reluctance was palpable. She weakly grasped the front of his shirt, fidgeting. Her breaths seemed to grow slower as if she wanted to say something but, was still hesitant.
Tracing soothing circles on Leslie’s back, Calix whispered, "Take your time, my love. I’m here."
Leslie blinked, feeling the calm reassurance in Calix’s voice and gaze envelop her. His constant patience and warmth were akin to a powerful shield against her fear and worry.
Taking in a deep breath, Leslie reminded herself wasting time by being hesitant wouldn’t bring them anywhere. She parted her lips, forcing those words out of her mouth.
"Do you remember... the time you told me about... your half-uncle?"
Froze, Calix unconsciously stopped circling on Leslie’s back. He blinked slowly, scouring the memory before nodding once.
Calix was surprised upon hearing Leslie bringing up his half-uncle, the son of his deceased grandfather’s mistress. The mother and son had been missing for decades and no one in the Xu family bothered to look for them.
"Yes. I told you back then, right before the Qingming Festival..." Calix trailed off before a realization dawned on him, "Wait... is this about him?"
Frowning, Leslie looked into Calix’s doubtful eyes for a moment longer before nodding, "Yes. It’s about him."
Calix said nothing. He adjusted his position on the bed while still securing Leslie in his arms. His heartbeat quickened as various questions flashed in his mind.
"...what did you see in your vision? Is he coming back? After all this time?"
Despite having yet to know the truth, Calix couldn’t help but think of the possibility of the boy—now a grownup man—returning. They had never interacted personally, much less kept in contact.
His grandfather flew the mother and son abroad, to somewhere Calix didn’t know and didn’t care to find out. At the same time, his grandmother ensured the former to fund their life.
After his grandfather’s death over a decade later, Calix and the Xu family learned something from his close aid. The old man had cut off the financial support for a few years already.
And...
The mother and son had disappeared elsewhere.
"He’ll return," uttered Leslie weakly, confirming Calix’s doubt, "He wants to avenge himself and his mother, but... I only know his name. Any other details... I don’t know."
Realizing the clear self-blame in Leslie’s voice, Calix quickly reassured her. He gently pulled the back of her head, letting her bury her face in his chest.
"Leslie, my sweetheart, it’s fine," Calix softened his voice, wishing to take her worries away, "His name is enough. Your husband is capable ah. I’ll surely find him and stop whatever plans he dreams of."
Calix lifted his hand from Leslie’s back, stroking her head gently. He sensed her body shiver, most likely out of her growing concerns about the recent vision.
"Y-yes... You have to find him. You need to stop him... before he does anything..."
Closing her eyes, Leslie wished the remaining storm in her heart to fade. She had come this far, she wouldn’t let Calix suffer from the predestined calamity.
"His name is... Nicholas Wu. I believe he’s already around us, perhaps... watching you from afar."
Calix narrowed his gaze, sensing a threat once Leslie uttered the man’s name. A dangerous glint flickered in his darkened eyes.
Nicholas Wu. The name itself was common but, the man mentioned by Leslie was not ordinary.
"I’ll surely catch him," whispered Calix, his usually mellow voice sharp on the edge, "He won’t get to mess with me or my family. Ever."
Leslie closed her eyes. She tightened her grasp on Calix’s shirt, earnestly praying they would overcome this last obstacle well.
