Chapter 442: He Had to be One Step Ahead
On Thursday, Calix took a couple of hours off work. Accompanied by Logan and Allen, he went to meet his deceased grandfather’s former close aide.
Calix had already informed Andrian about Nicholas Wu. His father was surprised but, he didn’t undermine the former’s worry.
Andrian was the one who suggested Calix to meet Mr. Guan.
William Guan worked as Old Master Xu’s right-hand man for over forty years. After retiring, the elderly man spent most of his time at his mountain villa in the suburbs of the city.
The last time Calix met Mr. Guan was during a Xu International banquet early this year, way before his sudden marriage to Leslie. The old man seemed to fully enjoy his retirement.
Mr. Guan boasted about the orchids and other flowers he nurtured in his greenhouse. He also mentioned how nice it was to wake up in the morning without having to go to work.
Because Calix had known Mr. Guan for the entirety of his life, he treated the elderly man like a second grandfather figure. He also addressed the latter as such.
"Boss, we’re here."
Calix’s eyes already landed on the two-story villa even before Logan announced their arrival. Mr. Guan was aware of his visit today. The guards at the main gate allowed the car in.
Emerging from the car, Calix stared at the surroundings. He hadn’t come here much before.
The villa was nestled between the towering trees, facing the cliffs.
The dazzling sunlight filtered through the rustling leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. This was a perfect place to spend one’s retirement in a peaceful solitude.
The villa’s size was on a smaller scale instead of being a grand mansion like Mr. Guan’s previous house. He lived here with two live-in housekeepers, one male and one female.
Mr. Guan’s wife had passed away a few years back while his two children lived somewhere else.
A few bodyguards took turns patrolling the area, including guarding the main gate. They assured the security of the compound.
"Calix."
An elderly man in his late 70s appeared before Calix. Wearing a smile on his wrinkly face, the old man’s countenance beamed as he walked on the stony pathway, his steps and back were still steady and straight.
"Grandpa Bill, how have you been?"
Returning the elderly man’s smile, Calix bowed respectfully to Mr. Guan. He chuckled when the old man suddenly laughed, his tone pleasant.
"Come inside," Mr. Guan patted Calix’s back, gesturing to the main entrance of the villa, "I didn’t expect to see you here, Calix. Let’s chat over some tea."
"Sure, Grandpa Bill."
Calix followed Mr. Guan inside the villa, finding how simple yet comforting the interior decoration was. The elderly man brought him to the sunroom where the view of the greenhouse next door was the clearest.
A middle-aged man appeared with a three-tiered food trolley, bringing a pot of tea and some traditional desserts. He immediately left after serving the refreshments.
"The orchids seem to bloom well," uttered Calix, his eyes looking through the glass panels of the greenhouse, "You’re really living your green thumb dream, Grandpa Bill."
Mr. Guan let out some chuckles, amused by Calix’s choice of words. Curling up his wrinkly lips, he stared at the young man sitting opposite him.
Mr. Guan watched Calix and his siblings growing up well under Harper and Andrian’s care, not to mention Old Mrs. Xu’s as well. At the same time, he was also glad to see how thriving Xu International was under Calix’s tutelage.
"I heard about your marriage," Mr. Guan said after taking a sip of his tea, "Congratulations, Calix. I was surprised when I heard that you have a child too."
The news of Calix’s marriage to the eldest daughter of the Li family reached Mr. Guan months ago. He thought it was strange but didn’t dwell much on it.
Yet, Calix’s official statement about his wife and the sudden appearance of their daughter shocked Mr. Guan. The issue regarding the Li family also surprised him.
He never foresaw such a thing to happen.
"Thank you, Granpa Bill," Calix smiled faintly, never thinking of revealing the truth to Mr. Guan, "My wife and I were together a few years back but, we broke up. I’m just glad we can reconcile and raise our daughter together now."
"Bring your wife and daughter here later. I’d love to meet them."
Calix chuckled, happy at the thought of bringing Leslie and Calliope to such a serene place, "Sure, Grandpa Bill."
Putting down the cup, Mr. Guan’s smile had a hint of helplessness. He could guess that Calix visited him today with a motive.
Shouldn’t he try to find it out?
"Enough with this chit chat," Mr. Guan raised his brows, laughter escaped his lips, "Shouldn’t you tell this old man why are you here?"
Mr. Guan’s words lured laughter from Calix’s mouth. Instead of trying to deny it, he nodded once to confirm the elderly man’s guess.
"Yes, I come here with a motive," Calix straightened his posture. The playful look on his countenance lessened, "Grandpa Bill, I have questions to ask about my grandfather’s other child."
Mr. Guan stared blankly at Calix for a moment. Without asking the young man, he knew who Calix was referring to.
It was none other than the deceased Old Master Xu’s child with his much younger mistress. The one who was exiled abroad alongside her.
"You want to know about him, why?"
Wasting no time, Calix explained, his voice low, "I received a tip about him and it might harm me and my family. I have to be one step ahead of him. Grandpa Bill, please help me."
Mr. Guan was still surprised by Calix’s request. He didn’t expect this young man to bring up his estranged half-uncle whose age was around his.
"What kind of tip? Are you saying he might plan something to avenge himself and that woman?" asked Mr. Guan after forcibly letting the shock settle into his mind, "Because of what happened decades ago?"
"Yes," Calix replied before quickly asking, "Is his birth name, Nicholas Wu?"
"...yes," Mr. Guan had no choice but to nod, "Are you sure you want to delve deeper into this issue? Is the tip trustable?"
"It’s better to be safe than sorry," Calix smiled but, it didn’t reach his eyes, "Don’t you think so too, Grandpa Bill?"
Mr. Guan had nothing to say except to agree with Calix.
Indeed. You had to be one step ahead of your time if you didn’t want to lose miserably.
