Chapter 438: Pillow Talk on a Summer Night

Delighted upon hearing Leslie’s swift and positive reply to his inquiry, Calix’s eyes flickered with joy. Chuckles slipping out between his lips, he tightened his arms around her.

"Okay~ Let’s start moving your things here soon."

Affected by Calix’s enormous joy, Leslie deepened her smile. She buried her face in his chest, savoring the warmth she had been missing for a few days. His soft laughter echoed above her head.

The husband and wife continued lying on the bed, cuddling. Only the faint underbed lights illuminated the powder blue room.

Calix and Leslie began to chat more about what happened during their short separation.

Leslie filled Calix in about what Evelyn had shared with her during the younger lady’s visit the other day. Evelyn had resumed her schedule but, she was still closely involved with Bella’s fight against Chase.

"Oh? I haven’t heard of anything new from Eve. Seems like everything’s going well for her."

Nodding, Leslie explained further, her eyes looking into Calix’s, "That trash will lose this case surely. Bella has passed the evidence of his crime to Eve’s legal team."

As Evelyn planned, Bella and her family came to the city once summer break started[01]. She let them stay in one of her apartment units while having her bodyguards look after the family’s safety.

Chase had been basically neglected by his agency yet, it was better to be safe than sorry.

Bella and her family’s arrival hadn’t been disclosed, at least not until she came up as a witness during the future trials.

"Bella has agreed to Eve’s suggestions. You know, about the scholarship? Her brother is a bright student too so, Eve persuades both to accept the offer."

Leslie was glad to hear Evelyn showing her utmost support to Bella and her family.

The young lady entered the treacherous water of the entertainment industry with the hope of improving her family’s life. Unfortunately, her dreams were cut short due to her naive entanglement with the predatory scumbag.

Aware that the siblings’ future would be promising with the right support, Evelyn offered to provide a scholarship for both Bella and her younger brother. They gratefully accepted it.

The funding would lighten Mrs. Yao’s weight of worries about sending her children to continue their studies.

"I’ll call Eve later and... haa!"

Unable to stop himself from yawning, Calix quickly covered his mouth. Tears glazed his reddened eyes, expressing how exhausted he actually was.

Leslie chuckled in helplessness. Patting Calix’s arm, she quietly persuaded, "Go to sleep. We can talk again tomorrow. You still need to adjust to your jetlag, don’t you?"

"Urgh... I just wanna talk to my wife longer," complained Calix, his lips slightly pouting.

Stifling her giggle, Leslie tilted up her chin, giving Calix a soft kiss. She almost laughed once she noticed how he froze for a second.

"Sleep, honey," Leslie crooned while stroking Calix’s back, "We can continue tomorrow, en?"

Calix exhaled a sigh, aware that he couldn’t hold back his creeping exhaustion any longer, "...I should. Good night, sweetheart."

"Good night, honey."

Leslie looked at Calix closing his eyes, her smile softening as she felt his posture gradually relax as he drifted to sleep. Lines of exhaustion marred his forehead, the evidence of his fatigue.

"Sleep well."

Upon whispering, Leslie pulled the blanket to cover Calix up to his shoulders. The air-conditioning system worked well against the summer heat outside the manor.

’When should I bring it up?’

Leslie wanted to tell Calix about the last obstacle—a villain—that would be coming his way sooner or later. Even though Mimo couldn’t give her many details, knowing the man’s name was enough for now.

’Nicholas Wu. As expected... he’ll reappear.’

Leslie quietly recalled her conversation with the soul of Mimo a few days ago. The crochet fox toy exposed that the missing half-uncle of Calix would make his appearance later, seeking justice for his mother[02].

In the original story, Nicholas’ sudden appearance caught Calix and the Xu family off guard. The man stealthily approached them, taking advantage of the Xu family’s obliviousness to his identity.

As one of the main supporting characters, Calix emerged victoriously against Nicholas. The latter’s plan to seize Xu International was thwarted narrowly by Calix.

But...

Leslie wanted to prevent Nicholas’ plan from the beginning. Dealing with the vengeful man earlier was better than letting the original plot take place.

’I hope Calix won’t be too shocked. He surely never expects to meet that man again.’

Leslie refrained from sighing out loud. She believed Calix could handle this issue. She just needed to find an appropriate time to tell him, preferably as soon as possible.

Pushing her worries to the back of her mind, Leslie closed her eyes. She found comfort and warmth in Calix’s embrace.

The moon eventually gave way to the sun to shine again. It was a bright and calming Saturday morning.

The exhausted man ended up sleeping in. Calix didn’t even stir when Leslie left the bed. She let him continue sleeping instead of waking him up. He needed all the rest he could have.

Leslie wheeled herself out of the bedroom, heading to hers. The clock pointed to seven-fifteen in the morning. She wanted to change out of her cotton nightgown before having breakfast with Calliope.

The mother and daughter had a nice breakfast with Aunt Wendy and Mrs. Su. Leslie handed the souvenirs Calix had put aside for the private nurse. Mrs. Su gratefully accepted them.

After breakfast, Leslie accompanied Calliope taking a stroll in the backyard. The little one was excited to see the blooming hydrangeas, nurtured by Uncle Raymond.

"Mama, Papa still sleep?"

Pouting, Calliope asked Leslie about Calix. She thought she could swim in the lake with her papa but, he hadn’t woken up. She also wanted to show the hydrangeas to him.

"Papa is still tired," Leslie gently stroked Calliope’s head, understanding the little dumpling was simply missing Calix, "Poppy can play with your papa later, en?"

"Okay... Poppy will wait... En? Papa!"

Surprised by Calliope’s sudden shout, Leslie turned to look behind. A smiling Calix was sprinting to them from the main building.

"Morning, my ladies~ Sorry, I slept in."

"Papa! Hahaha!"

Calix quickly picked up Calliope from the ground before bending to kiss Leslie’s forehead. A beaming smile was carved on his lips.

"When did you wake up?" asked Leslie, laughing in helplessness, "You should sleep more."

"It’s fine. I’ll take a nap this afternoon," replied Calix, feeling good to know Leslie was concerned about him.

Exchanging a fond smile, the husband and wife looked at each other affectionately.
