Chapter 430: An Attack After Another

’She looked a little off.’

The thought crossed Calix’s mind after ending his video call with Leslie. They chatted for almost half an hour before he reluctantly had to hang up for a scheduled online meeting.

Calix didn’t forget to tell Leslie that he would contact her again tonight, hoping to talk to Calliope as well. The little one was still napping.

Halting in his tracks in the hallway, Calix threw his gaze outside the windows. The flight was still soaring high above the sky. The giant metal bird would land in five hours.

’She’s hiding something from me. What is it?’

Calix was slightly caught off guard once he saw how puffy Leslie’s eyes were. She also seemed a little gloomy despite looking cheerful enough once they chatted.

"The movie was sad. Will you cry if you watch it?"

The excuse sounded lame to Calix but, he didn’t pressure Leslie for the exact answer. Knowing how she was, Leslie would share the real reason once she was ready.

"I wanna do something."

Exhaling a sigh, Calix thought of an idea. He would pass the instruction to Edward after the online meeting later.

Calix fished out his phone from the pocket of his pants. Opening the messaging app, he sent a message to Aunt Wendy’s personal number.

[Calix: My wife seems down. Please check on her, Aunt Wendy. Thank you.]

Calix stared at the screen for a minute longer before returning it to the pocket. Aunt Wendy might be busy with her tasks hence there was no immediate reply.

Resuming walking, Calix strode to the room where his subordinates were waiting. They were also involved in the meeting.

Calix and his subordinates stayed in the room for over an hour. The meeting was shorter than usual but, the inputs were welcomed well by everyone.

The subordinates who remained at the company didn’t have to extend their working hours for long. Everyone wished Calix and his entourage the best of luck for the business trip.

"Get out," uttered Calix to the ones sitting in the room with him, his tone languid, "Well, do whatever you wanna do. We won’t have much time to rest once we land."

"Okay, Boss Xu."

"You get some rest too, CEO Xu."

"Hehe, are you going to call your wife again?"

Frowning, Calix threw daggers at the men. His action earned laughter from his subordinates. They hurried out of the room before their boss’ piercing glare could kill them.

Calix was left alone inside the room. He moved from the meeting table to the couch by the windows. Taking out his phone, he immediately called Edward.

"Boss Xu, don’t miss me too much ah. We’ve just seen each other in the meeting."

Edward’s monotonous voice annoyed Calix. Scoffing, he replied, "I better miss my wife and child ah. Anyway, I have another task for you."

"What is it?"

Calix could imagine Edward rolling his eyes. Shaking his head in helplessness, he wondered what had he done to gain an annoying chief assistant like Edward.

"Please arrange..."

Despite everything, Edward still attentively listened to Calix’s instruction. The younger man chuckled once he learned what his boss intended to do.

"Aiya, Boss Xu. You’re really love-struck for your wife and a fool for your daughter ah. Hahaha! Consider it done! Don’t forget to give me additional bonuses. I’m your wingman, remember?"

This time it was Calix’s turn to roll his eyes. If he ever cut Edward’s head open, he would surely find currency signs in them. Of course, including the images of his beloved dog.

"Do what I’ve just told you first," Calix sighed. He refrained from pinching the space between his brows, "Anyway, is there any new news about the Li family?"

The change of topic brought the serious aspect of Edward back. The younger man swiftly reported the current situation to Calix.

"Reporters have received anonymous tips from us. They’re on high alert now. Some of them have already camped near the Li company and their home."

Rowan, Geoffrey and even Old Madam Li herself still tried to get ahold of Calix but, their attempts had been futile so far. At the same time, they were busy fending off the authorities.

Edward continued with his report as Calix quietly listened to him.

"Old Madam Xu and Chairman Xu will strike soon. As per their words, they’re waiting for the perfect time to attack."

A sneer was drawn on Calix’s lips. He knew how vicious his grandmother and father could be, including his mother.

On behalf of the three people, the attorney Mr. Wei would press charges on the Li family.

One of them involved child abandonment related to Calliope, as well as character defamation that ruined Leslie’s reputation.

Both Calix and Leslie had already agreed with the arrangement.

Mr. Wei stated once, "The Li family will have major problems at both corporate and social levels."

The entire high society had already heard of the newly crowned wife of the Xu family’s heir. Soon, news of their hidden child would spread in the circle.

The pieces of news most likely would reach the tabloids as well.

Calix and Leslie had decided to make known Calliope’s existence. They wouldn’t parade their daughter for her own safety but, they would no longer conceal her either.

The Li family would be heavily scandalized by committing corporate fraud, character defamation, child abandonment and several other charges.

"Keep me up to date with everything. Once it’s time, release my statement."

"Will do, Boss."

Calix had prepared an official statement regarding Leslie, Calliope and their battle against the Li family. Edward just needed to publish it when the right time came.

For now, they would just let the Li family’s rocky boat entertain everyone.

After sharing a few more words, Calix finally hung up. He let out a heavy sigh, silently expecting everything would end soon.

He simply desired quiet day-to-day life with his beloved wife and child but, their statuses wouldn’t give them ordinary lives.

At the very least, Calix wished that he, Leslie and Calliope would stop being swept by such dramas stemming from the Li family’s actions.

Was that too much to ask for?
