Chapter 429: His Absence Created a Void in Her Heart
After thanking Mimo and telling the crochet fox toy to return to Calix, Leslie spent some quiet time to herself. Following her heart, she moved from her bedroom to his.
Lying on the huge mattress, Leslie’s eyes blankly wandered to the summer sky outside the windows. She picked up the lingering minty scent in the air, which reminded her of Calix.
Receiving several shocking revelations from Mimo overwhelmed Leslie despite being prepared for them. She needed time to think by herself, including crafting her next moves.
"...what should I do?"
Leslie grabbed a pillow, the one used by Calix last night. Hugging it close to her, she took in the scent she had grown familiar with. Tears pooled in her eyes, hidden behind her closed eyelids.
Calix was Axel. The original Calix had long been dead in the car accident six years ago.
The transmigrated Axel’s final wish before stepping into Death’s door was to reunite with his lover – her.
Mimo was the mystical link that led Leslie and Calliope to the new world Axel was living in as Calix Xu.
Calix would eventually regain his memories as Axel but, Leslie didn’t know when it would happen, including the conditions that needed to be fulfilled.
And...
Axel, now Calix, would face the last and major conflict set in the storyline soon. Once he survived through the ordeal, he wouldn’t be bound to the plots anymore.
’I want to tell him... Should I wait until he returns?’
Leslie felt as if a huge rock was pressing against her heart just to suffocate her. Aside from worrying about the final conflict, she also couldn’t help but think of her feelings.
Axel was the only one Leslie had ever loved before. She didn’t open her heart to anyone else even after years of his death. Her main focus was on raising Calliope.
Until she came to this world and met him.
Leslie began relying on Calix because she needed to find Calliope. Throughout the time they spent together, his personality inevitably charmed her.
A few months back, Leslie often silently told herself not to easily fall for Calix even though sometimes he reminded her of Axel. Aside from not wanting to treat him as a substitute, she also felt guilty for Charlene.
The compassionate and outstanding Calix Xu was supposed to be destined to Charlene Li, not her—Leslie Song—the transmigrator.
Leslie only slowly let the guilt go after meeting Charlene for the last time. The latter urged her to begin a brand new life here.
Because of Charlene’s genuine persuasion, Leslie decided to face the coming future without remorse. At the same time, she hoped to provide Calliope with a stable and complete family in this new world.
Calix was a perfect husband and father, leading Leslie’s feelings for him to grow. Moreover, after she sensed he also began harboring feelings for her.
His confession the other day only served to give her the courage to step forward.
’Right now... he is Calix.’
No matter when or how he would regain his memories as Axel, Leslie first met the man as Calix Xu.
’I miss him. Really... miss him.’
Pushing the pillow closer to herself, Leslie thought of the warmth of Calix’s loving embrace. She also missed the tenderness in his eyes and voice whenever he was with her.
His absence created a void in her heart.
"Come back soon... please."
Leslie whispered her yearning to the air, wishing for Calix’s early and safe return. She wanted to be in his arms and refill the gaping space left in her heart.
Knock! Knock!
"...who?"
Surprised by the sudden knocking on the door, Leslie abruptly opened her eyes. She propped herself up, sitting on the mattress with her gaze directed to the wooden door.
"I’m sorry for disturbing you, Mrs. Xu," Mrs. An appeared at the door, smiling apologetically to Leslie, "Your phone has been ringing nonstop. I picked it up. Mr. Xu is on the line."
"...what?"
"Here’s your phone."
Mrs. An hurriedly entered the room before handing the smartphone to Leslie. She remembered leaving it inside her bedroom before heading to Calix’s.
"Thank you, Mrs. An..."
The private nurse nodded once before quickly stepping out of Calix’s bedroom, leaving the dazed Leslie sitting on the bed.
The young lady’s eyes went from the disappearing figure of the nurse to the phone in her hand.
She didn’t expect to receive a call from him this soon. After all, they already had chatted for a bit right after lunch earlier.
Calix’s name was displayed on the phone screen. The call had been going on for over two minutes.
Bringing the phone to her right ear, Leslie quietly greeted the man at the end of the line, "...hello, Calix."
"Hello, my sweetheart," Calix’s mellow voice rang in Leslie’s ear, having traces of laughter, "I heard you’re in my room. Missing me, en?"
Blinking, Leslie sensed heat emanating from her cheeks. She unconsciously grasped the bedsheet with her left hand, her heart trembling upon hearing his familiar voice.
"Yes, I miss you," admitted Leslie, her voice as quiet as the summer breeze.
Whether he was Calix or Axel, she truly missed him.
"Hehe, I miss you too," Calix chuckled, the echoes resonating in Leslie’s heart. He hummed for a moment before asking, "Can we change to video call? I wanna see you, Leslie."
Stunned by Calix’s request, Leslie didn’t immediately reply to him. She still remembered how hard she had been crying earlier. Her reddened eyes would give her away to the perceptive Calix.
"Well... I just finished a sad movie ah," Leslie came up with an excuse, her voice shaky, "I don’t look good now. You still wanna video call me?"
Calix laughed helplessly. He said between chuckles, "My wife is always beautiful. Come, come, I wanna see my wife. I’ll switch to video call, en?"
A faint smile was carved on Leslie’s lips. Despite everything, she also wanted to see Calix.
"Okay. Let’s switch to that."
"Gimme a sec."
Calix swiftly changed the call from voice-only to a video call. The screen clearly displayed his smiling countenance.
"Hello, my sweetheart~"
The affectionate tone softened Leslie’s smile. She inwardly felt the constriction around her heart loosened upon seeing him.
