Chapter 43: He Was a Decent Human Being
Calix didn’t let Xander drag him somewhere far. Even though no one aside from him could see Leslie, he was slightly concerned about leaving her alone inside the lounge.
What if something happened when he was away? No one else could help her ah!
The two friends settled for an Italian restaurant not far from Xu International, Funfetti Italia Kitchen. Calix and Xander used to have meals there a few times before. Davin also joined them when he was free.
Because it was lunchtime, the restaurant was full of patrons. Most of the tables had been occupied by them.
But, the two young CEOs managed to find a table with a good spot. They sat by the windows facing the pedestrian walkways outside.
"I really want to get the truth out of you now," hissed Xander, sounding so dissatisfied. His eyes subtly looked around the restaurant, "You’re lucky that we’re here."
Some of the Xu International staff came here to have lunch as well. There were also employees from other nearby companies who recognized the two figures.
Both Xander and Calix noticed the subtle attention directed to their way by those people. Yet, they played ignorance as always. This was not a rare occurrence.
A chuckle slipped out Calix’s lips as they curled into a smirk. He calmly sliced the pizza on his plate while saying, "That’s why I told you to come here. Do you think I’ll give you a chance to interrogate me?"
If Xander successfully dragged Calix to someplace with private dining rooms, the latter understood full well he couldn’t easily escape his friend’s probing.
Xander wouldn’t openly shoot out personal questions if they were in public. That was not his style no matter how crazily persistent he could be.
Oh, yeah, his craziness was only reserved for his girlfriend.
Calix was so relieved as he remembered that. Despite feeling sorry for Violet, he placed importance on his own safety first.
Hearing Calix’s response darkened Xander’s face. He refrained from kicking his friend’s legs under the table. No matter how annoying Calix was, he needed to preserve his aloof image.
"This Sunday at Viluxs. Davin will join too," Xander kept a poker face. He twirled the pasta, much was still left on his plate, "Don’t make excuses. You won’t stay at the Li family’s home for days, won’t you?"
The mention of the Li family’s ancestral home deepened Calix’s sneer. He couldn’t wait to face Old Madam Li and Geoffrey’s family. They were upset because he chose Leslie as his bride instead of Gladys.
"What for? I better stay home with my wife," Calix took another bite of the pizza. He made sure to munch and swallow properly before resuming, "I’m not like you, a man without a wife."
Xander’s expression tensed. He unconsciously tightened his grip on the cutleries.
This guy... he proudly boasted as if he had been happily married for a decade!
Calix snickered at the sight of Xander’s strained countenance. He gleefully continued, "Don’t look so constipated ah. Violet might run away from you again. Try to be more cheerful like me."
"..."
Xander gritted his teeth while Calix merrily finished the rest of his pizza. Despite scoring a victory, he still needed to be vigilant for tomorrow night’s battle.
Sigh, facing the entire Li family was better than Xander alone.
Not long after, a joyful Calix with a happy tummy and an upset Xander finished their meals. Lunch hour hadn’t ended yet.
"Where’s your wedding candy? You shouldn’t be stingy and give the best to me and Davin," complained Xander as he walked in front of Calix. He still couldn’t let go of the topic.
"Hehe, I should ask for my wedding money first, CEO Qin," replied Calix, followed by laughter, "How about any item from your prized possessions? The ink painting by Master Shangguan sounds nice."
Xander loved collecting art pieces from his favorite artisans. One of them was Master Shangguan, an internationally renowned ink painter.
"In your dream," Xander gave Calix a side-eye. He outstretched his hand to pull open the door, "I’d rather give you...?!"
"Ah!"
Xander didn’t realize one woman was pushing the door to get inside, resulting in her stumbling on her feet. Sensing she was going to fall against him, he quickly moved his entire body backward.
"Careful!"
Calix swiftly extended both hands, catching the woman by her shoulders. On reflex, she grasped one of his forearms, her face slightly paled.
"Miss, are you okay?" Calix helped the woman to stand properly while maintaining a distance from her, "Sorry, we didn’t notice you’re coming in."
"I’m fine... thank you," the woman smiled apologetically. She let go of Calix’s arm, "Sorry, I grabbed you."
"It’s okay. It’s our fault."
Calix nodded once. He quickly dragged Xander out of the restaurant. The woman smiled at him in appreciation before making her way inside.
The bright sunbeam fell on the two men as they walked down the pedestrian walkway. Xander parked his car nearby.
"Why did you help her?" asked Xander with a frown. Confusion laced in his voice, "What if she fell on you?"
Calix exhaled a sigh. He was not surprised by Xander’s question. His friend had brought it up before.
"If I didn’t help, she either would fall on me or the floor," Calix squinted his eyes, deliberately giving Xander a judgemental stare, "Don’t sound so confused ah."
Xander scoffed. Unwilling to give up, he retorted, "You’re a man with a wife now. Don’t casually touch a woman like that."
Calix was exasperated, "I’m a decent human being. How could I just watch her fall? It’s not like we’re in a secluded place."
"Just let her fall. She won’t get hurt much."
"..."
Xander really couldn’t stand other people randomly touching him but, Calix thought his friend could be extreme sometimes.
Many people, especially young women had thrown themselves on the two men in the past. The ladies wanted to catch their attention.
Due to that, Xander became so averse to the opposite gender until he met Violet.
As for Calix, he didn’t think too much about it. He would only be extra vigilant if he was in a secluded place to avoid rumors running rampant. Wearing body cameras also helped in this situation something that Xander also practiced.
’Urgh... I better go back to Leslie quick instead of staying with this grumpy man.’
Shaking his head slightly, Calix wondered what Leslie was doing alone now.
