Chapter 44: Why Reject the Free Offer of Money?
Once Xander dropped Calix off at Xu International, the latter quickly rushed to Floor 48. Instead of troubling his mind with his friend’s weird antic, conversing with Leslie was better.
Hurm, aside from being a ghost, she was more rational than his CEO friend. Even after decades of being friends, he still couldn’t fully understand Xander.
"Tsk tsk, I’m not surprised if Violet leaves him for good if he doesn’t change his rigid ways."
Shaking his head in helplessness, Calix recalled the fights that often occurred between Xander and Violet. Most of the time they happened due to his friend’s extreme possessiveness.
As Calix walked out of the private elevator, Edward came showing his face to him. Most of the staff of the secretarial department were still out for lunch. Only a few remained glued to their work desk.
"Boss Xu."
Without slowing down his pace or stopping entirely, Calix raised his brows at Edward, "What? Any urgent matter?"
Edward shook his head before speaking monotonously, "All of your orders have been sent here. Do you want to check each of them yourself?"
"Ah..." Calix swiftly understood what Edward meant by that, "There’s no need. Just move everything inside the car. I’ll head there immediately from here."
"Yes, boss."
Edward showed his understanding before quickly vanishing from Calix’s sight. As the CEO’s Chief of Assistants, he still had more things to do.
Calix entrusted Edward with the task of procuring the gifts he wanted to bring to the Li family’s ancestral home this evening. Even though he disliked them, this was still something he should do.
From what he heard and saw, Leslie didn’t have a good relationship with the Li family. This included her parents. She didn’t look happy at all seeing her parents last night.
And...
Even Rowan admitted outright to Calix that he hadn’t been treating Leslie well. He let his eldest daughter suffer until she was dubbed as the unfavored eldest young miss of the Li family.
"What kind of drama will happen tonight?" Calix snickered, whispering to himself, "It’ll be some kind of entertainment ah."
While humming to a tune, Calix entered his private office. It was as empty as he left just now.
In the distance, Calix faintly heard the sound of TV playing in the background. The echo came from the direction of the lounge.
"Oho? Seems like someone’s enjoying her movie time ah."
With a lopsided grin on his lips, Calix knocked on the door twice. He waited for a moment before opening the door.
Creak...
As expected, Leslie was so engrossed in the movie that she didn’t notice Calix stepping inside the lounge. She was lying against a pile of pillows stacked near the headboard, resting her legs on the mattress.
Leslie’s eyes were completely glued to the screen. She didn’t realize a certain someone was looking at her with a funny smile on his lips.
As if she was troubled by the current scene of the movie, her eyebrows twisted. They expressed the tumultuous emotions taking over her as the movie plot progressed.
Crossing his arms, Calix leaned sideways on the wall. He kept his gaze on Leslie. Laughter threatened to spill out of his mouth yet, he forced himself to keep quiet.
What made her so focused like that?
Intrigued by what Leslie was watching right now, Calix shifted his eyes from her to the huge screen.
"Urgh... How could she be that cruel? Doesn’t she want her son to be happy?"
"..."
Leslie whose attention was on the movie started grumbling, attracting Calix’s attention again. His eyes only landed on the screen for a few seconds.
Right now, Leslie was mad with the evil mother of the male lead. The proud rich madam tried to force the female lead to leave her son.
It was the classic scene of being offered an envelope full of money! Or checks!
On the screen, the female lead rejected the money and insisted her love for the male lead was pure. She would rather die than be without him.
Nothing could be done to make her leave him, not even millions of money.
Then, the female lead grabbed her handbag and strode out of the restaurant. The evil mother was fuming mad as she cursed the female lead for being ignorant.
"So stupid. She just left like that?"
Leslie muttered louder. Her eyes were locked on the abandoned envelope of checks on the table. She had yet to notice Calix’s presence until...
"Hahaha! Why are you so mad?"
Leslie flinched. She abruptly turned her eyes toward the door, finally seeing the man. Her pupils enlarged in surprise.
"C-Calix? Since when are you here?"
She heard nothing! Not even a footstep!
"I have been here for so long!" Calix scoffed. Walking away from the wall, he stopped right next to the bed, "Are you so angry at the mom? Because she disliked the heroine?"
Leslie’s cheeks flushed red, the heat creeping down her neck.
Certainly, this guy had been watching her in silence. Just why couldn’t he make a noise like a normal person?
Calix was still smiling teasingly at Leslie, prompting her to ignore her embarrassment.
"That’s that. But, I’m also mad because the female lead didn’t take the money. She shouldn’t waste the offer ah."
"...what?"
Calix blinked. He didn’t expect to hear that kind of reply from Leslie. Marvel flickered in his peach blossom eyes.
Leslie nodded. Narrowing her eyes, she glared at Calix.
"CEO Xu, any sum of money is better than none."
"Hahaha!"
Calix threw his head backward, laughing out loud. He didn’t know why he was easily amused by Leslie’s straightforward answer.
Leslie ignored Calix. Because he was already here, she could finally pick up the remote control. She sped up until the scene showing the female lead meeting the male lead again.
"If it’s you, will you accept the money?" Calix dragged a chair before sitting near the bed, "I thought it’s customary for heroines to reject the money or anything offered by the evil mothers-in-law."
"Time has changed, CEO Xu. We, the female viewers, will take the money."
Leslie remembered a few forum discussions that brought up this topic. She also recalled the frustrating comments she read whenever the female lead of a story refused the money offer.
Most of the commenters said if they were the female lead, they wouldn’t reject the money. Leslie shared the same opinions as them.
Calix chuckled. He tried guessing, "What if the hero will think badly of the heroine?"
Leslie made a face, "Calix, if he easily loses trust in her, especially without hearing her explanation, will he be a good male lead? Or, a partner in general?"
Calix blinked. His mind was instantly reminded of his friend, Xander.
"...no, he’s not a good man for the heroine."
"That’s the answer," Leslie shrugged. She replied nonchalantly, "The female lead better takes the money for herself. Or, she can buy gifts using it before sending them to the evil mother-in-law. How hilarious will it be?"
Calix nodded. He was speechless with Leslie’s perspectives.
But...
He liked them ah. Yeah, the heroines should take the money offered by the hero’s mother. There was nothing bad with it.
Getting free money was a blessing.
Even better if the female lead flaunted the money back on the evil mother-in-law’s face.
Oh! That evil woman would cough out blood out of anger!
