Chapter 42: CEO Xu Was Such an Exemplary Young Man
Calix laughed at the sight of Leslie looking so bewildered. Her pupils enlarged, surprise was evidently written in them.
"Why? Can’t believe it? I had to go through rehab a bit. The treatment bored me so, I started crocheting in my spare time."
While joking, Calix extended a hand to grab the orange cat toy. He gently pressed its stomach. The memory of six years ago resurfaced in his mind, bringing a smile to his lips.
Leslie blinked. Her mouth formed a round shape. She asked cautiously, "...you learned crocheting there? Wouldn’t it be difficult for you?"
During their car ride earlier, Calix only mentioned he was in a coma for almost six months. The thought of him having to undergo rehabilitation slipped out of Leslie’s mind.
Surely, he needed those treatments, right?
Leslie recalled the scar she accidentally saw this morning. Such a huge mark should result from a gruesome accident.
That meant aside from his brain injury, Calix also had problems with the movement of his limbs.
Well... those were common in such cases. How could she not think about that?
"Sorry... I didn’t mean to pry."
Leslie suddenly felt guilty even though Calix was open in sharing the story. Her expression sank.
Calix shrugged, smiling nonchalantly, "My motor skills were affected so, crocheting actually helped in my treatment. I started learning because I was bored then, I grew to like it."
"...you like doing it until now? Who... who taught you?"
Despite feeling uncomfortable, Leslie actually was interested to hear more thus, Calix generously told her a story of the past. He had forgotten about Xander who was waiting for him outside the lounge.
"There’s a grandpa who loved crocheting toys for the sick children. He had been there long before me. The grandpa taught me everything about it."
The kindhearted old man was well-loved by the hospital staff and the sick children. Every time he felt healthy enough to wander far from his room, he would drop by the pediatrician’s ward.
Calix met the old man by chance one day. The happy laughter of the children lured him to head to the children’s ward.
The sight of the colorful and adorable crochet toys stirred something within him. He kept watching them until the grandpa greeted him.
"Young man, do you find them cute?"
Calix quickly admitted to it. That was the starting point of his learning to crochet.
At that time, Calix still had difficulty controlling his limbs. But, he was still passionate about studying the art of crocheting which required many tiny details and delicate finger movements.
Somehow, making the stuffed crochet toys felt so familiar to him despite being his first time having an interest in the field.
"I made sloppy crochet in the beginning. I still keep them tho," Calix let out a chuckle. His countenance relaxed further, "I don’t crochet regularly now. Usually when I’m stressed."
Calix purposely put some of his creations on the bookshelf. The others were stored properly back at the manor.
"Wow..."
Leslie’s confusion morphed into amazement. Her previous discomfort vanished.
Calix grinned. He didn’t point out how Leslie had stopped feeling bad for him. Seeing her smile relieved him.
"If you want, I’ll show the rest to you. Hehe, Mia loved the pink bunny I made for her last year."
It was so obvious how proud Calix was of this unexpected skill he possessed. He didn’t pretend he had nothing with the art commonly associated with women.
Like someone she knew.
Lips curling up, Leslie couldn’t resist praising and teasing Calix, "You’re good at cooking and crocheting? What an exemplary man you are, CEO Xu."
"Hehe, I’m good in sports and martial arts too," boasted Calix proudly. He deliberately crossed his arms over his chest, trying to flex his good physique, "That’s why I was one of the most eligible bachelors of Silvercrest City."
Leslie burst out laughing. Even though Calix sounded so full of himself, she didn’t think badly of him. It might be due to his outgoing and caring personality.
"Yes, yes, CEO Xu. You’re a good husband candidate," Leslie covered her mouth, gently shaking her head in helplessness, "You should go for lunch now. I’ll watch a movie in the meantime."
Xander had been waiting outside for quite some time already. Leslie wanted to avoid the male lead from suddenly barging into the lounge. If not, he would witness a TV remote controller floating in the air.
"...urgh. That’s a possibility," Calix made a face. He had forgotten about Xander’s intention to drag him for lunch, "Yeah, I’ll go. I’ll remind Edward not to shut down the TV."
Having direct access, Edward always went in and out of the CEO’s office. If he noticed that the TV was on without anyone watching it, he would switch it off.
"Hehe, thanks," Leslie was thankful. She waved at Calix, "Enjoy your lunch."
"En... I hope so."
Leslie watched Calix walking out of the lounge. Before the door was closed, she quickly browsed the movie suggestions under the romance genre.
"I couldn’t hold anything when I reached Floor 45," murmured Leslie, recalling her adventure earlier, "That’s quite a huge perimeter."
Leslie deliberately tried picking a small object as she went from one floor to the other. It was her little experiment. She didn’t expect to gain a favorable result.
Calix was on Floor 48. Leslie managed to hold objects from one end of Floor 48 to the other one. The same thing happened when she was on Floor 47 and Floor 46.
"I can try looking through her things," Leslie started forming plans in her mind. Her focus was not on the opening of the movie, "Did she ever write diaries?"
Tonight was a rare chance for Leslie to go to the Li family’s ancestral home. She hoped to make use of the opportunity as much as she could.
"..."
Leslie shifted her eyes from the TV screen to the bookshelf. She silently looked at the line of the stuffed crochet toys.
