Chapter 428: The Truth Behind Their Transmigrations
The particular memory from more than six years ago resurfaced in Leslie’s mind. The initially blurry pieces of the remembrance slowly regained their clarity as they merged into one.
"Axel once mentioned something... about the yarn balls he bought when he visited a temple[01]."
Leslie’s voice sounded distant as if she wasn’t talking to Mimo. The memory brought her back to the time she was happy with her first lover, Axel.
Despite living in a small and old apartment, Leslie was already content with the everyday bliss enveloping her life. Axel often proved himself how much of a great partner he was.
On an autumn night, Leslie had just finished her part-time job at the nearby convenience store. Axel came to pick her up because her shift ended right before midnight.
The happy young man immediately exclaimed, telling her what he had done that day.
"Sweetheart! Do you know? Hehe, I found a craft store at the temple ah."
Axel accompanied a friend to a temple in the neighboring city. He told Leslie about buying yarn balls at the craft store when his friend was away.
"The shopkeeper told me to get the yarn balls. She said something about granting wishes. Hahaha! I know it’s a selling trick but, the colors and threads are high quality. I got a few of them."
Leslie laughed alongside Axel, thinking the shopkeeper did a good job attracting her customers. Her boyfriend showed the yarn balls to her once they got home that night.
"Why did you pick these colors? What do you wanna do?"
Leslie asked Axel after seeing the yarn balls in the colors of white, black and reddish-orange. She was already accustomed to his passion for crocheting.
"I don’t know why but, I thought of making a red fox ah. Hehe, do you like the idea? It’ll be cute!"
Leslie swiftly agreed. She encouraged Axel to be comfortable with his hobby even though some of his friends pointed out that crocheting suited women more.
Because Axel was preoccupied with his own jobs and making sure to spend quality time with Leslie, he took his time crocheting the red fox. After a week, he presented the crochet fox toy to Leslie.
"I made them while thinking of you. Aren’t I sweet, en?"
Leslie remembered accepting the fox happily before peppering Axel’s face with little kisses. The man delightedly received her affection. They ended up sharing laughter while cuddling on the bed.
Since then, Leslie had treasured the fox toy and named it Mimo. She never expected that the crochet fox would be among the two of Axel’s last gifts for her before his death – the other one was Calliope, nursed in her womb.
Taking a deep breath, Leslie turned to look at Mimo. The memory of the past left a bittersweet feeling in her heart. The crochet fox remained on her right shoulder.
"Was Axel’s final wish granted... because of you, Mimo?"
Mimo was crocheted from the yarn balls Axel bought on impulse at the temple craft store. If the fox toy said nothing about it, Leslie wouldn’t ever make the connections.
You can say so, Leslie. But, I can only try. Thankfully, everything works well for all of you.
Mimo was speaking the truth. Despite the unknown in her future after Axel’s early demise, Leslie and Calliope eventually were reunited with him in this world.
Shaking her head, Leslie pinched the space between her brows. There were so many things she had to take in and think of, but Leslie was glad to finally learn the truth behind her transmigration.
Unconsciously clenching her hands, Leslie voiced her concern, "Will my Calix... ever regain his memories as Axel?"
Leslie couldn’t deny she hoped Calix remembered the fond memories they shared in their first lives. Yet, she was also afraid of him recalling the moment he was dying.
How frightened he was?
How much pain he was in?
Yet... he still thought of her.
Mimo moved from Leslie’s shoulder to her lap. Placing its front paws on her tummy, the crochet fox toy quietly answered her.
He will, Leslie. He will remember you one day but, I don’t know when it will happen.
Leslie’s heart sank instead of blooming with happiness. Biting her lower lip, she nodded once. Fresh tears gushed out of her eyes, rolling down her cheeks.
"Can’t he... not remember? Or, at least... don’t make him remember... when he’s dying..."
Leslie’s sorrowful cries resonated above the tension in the bedroom. She earnestly hoped Mimo would give her the answer she desired.
How much agony Calix would be once he recovered his previous life’s memories, including when he was close to Death’s door?
Leslie would rather keep all the good and bad memories she shared with Axel to herself if it meant Calix had to relive the excruciating moment before his death.
Unfortunately, Mimo’s reply sent a punch to Leslie’s gut.
I’m sorry, Leslie. I don’t have control in that matter.
Desperate, Leslie tried looking for another option, "T-then... can you tell me the conditions set... for him to remember?"
Could she try to delay the impossible?
Could she?
Mimo shook its head, |I can’t tell you, Leslie. I’m sorry.|
Once again Leslie’s heart shattered. She found it difficult to breathe as if sturdy chains constricted her heart.
"...it’s fine, Mimo. It’s fine. Don’t... apologize... You’ve done more than enough... for us..."
Leslie was speaking the truth. Mimo indeed had done more than enough for her, Calliope and Axel. The crochet fox toy realized something beyond her wildest dream – to be reunited as a complete family.
Wiping her tears away, Leslie’s reddened eyes remained on Mimo’s face, "Mimo... I have another question..."
Ask me, Leslie. I’ll try to answer you.
Leslie exhaled a deep breath, trying to recompose herself. Her voice shaky, she asked, "Can you tell me... what kind of major obstacle that might come... to us in the future? Before the story ends?"
Leslie wished to prepare herself with some knowledge regarding the conflict that might storm through Calix’s life. Even though he was one of the supporting characters, she believed something would come for him.
You have thought about it before, Leslie. The last conflict will begin soon.
Leslie sucked in a breath, fear spiraling within her.
