Chapter 41: A Line of Adorable Stuffed Crochet Toys
"Oh... haha. I was mistaken."
Leslie chuckled in helplessness, laughing at her momentary silliness. Her eyes remained looking at the stuffed crochet fox toy.
On a closer look, this fox toy was not Mimo. The latter had very little signs of worn-out for being the toy Calliope loved hugging the most.
Aside from looking to be well taken care of, the red thread forming the fox toy was in a lighter shade of red. Its design was also slightly different than Mimo’s.
’Mimo, can you hear me?’
Leslie tried calling Mimo telepathically. This was her first time doing so after leaving Graceville Manor yesterday evening. She hadn’t contacted Mimo at all until now.
Leslie! Did you enjoy your night trip?
Mimo’s childlike voice sounded so excited as it instantly replied.
A sense of remorse pricked Leslie’s heart, wondering if a toy like Mimo felt lonely. She was too caught up in various matters until she forgot to call it.
Leslie stood opposite the bookshelf instead of sitting on the couch. While holding the Mimo-lookalike with both hands, she continued conversing with it.
’It’s kinda enjoyable. I received some important memories. Hehe, I found a crochet toy looking like you.’
Oh? You found a friend for me? Which one of us is cuter?
Leslie’s laughter was laced with disbelief. She didn’t expect Mimo would ask her something like that. Its questions made her think of the fox toy as a talking pet.
’Of course, you’re cuter! Have you forgotten how much Poppy and I adore you?’
Hehehe! Yes! I’m absolutely cuter! Nothing can beat me ah!
Mimo’s infectious laughter echoed in Leslie’s mind. Another helpless smile curved on her lips. She still felt guilty for leaving the fox toy alone at Calix’s residence.
Once she returned, Leslie would make sure to give Mimo lots of pats and hugs.
After Mimo’s giggling fit gradually died down, Leslie told the fox toy about her visit to the Li family’s ancestral home tonight.
’I think I’ll get more of Charlene’s memories. I wonder if I can remember who pushed her down the stairs. I still need to find the pendant.’
Leslie wanted to fulfill Charlene’s two wishes. Yet, she only recalled the latter’s request to look for the lost pendant. Charlene mentioned the culprit had it.
Be careful. Even though only CEO Xu can see you, you need to be vigilant.
Mimo lowered its tone. Leslie stifled her laughter as she noticed concern lacing the fox toy’s voice.
’Thanks for worrying about me, Mimo. Yes, I’ll be careful. After all, we haven’t found Poppy. Oh, he has agreed to help us. His people will start looking for Poppy now.’
|Yes! Yes! That’s good news!||
After talking some more, Leslie said goodbye to Mimo. She promised to contact it through telepathy again.
The fox toy giggled before the connection was cut off. Hearing its laughter of joy reminded Leslie of Calliope’s. Her daughter loved laughing, thinking that it would bring her good luck.
Shaking her head, Leslie focused back on reality. Her eyes shifted from the toy in her hands to the bookshelf.
"This is not the only one," murmured Leslie, entranced by what she was seeing now.
A few more stuffed crochet toys were displayed on the shelf. They included an orange cat, a pink bunny, two yellow bees, a green dinosaur, a smiling sunflower, and two snails with colorful shells.
All of them were so adorable! She couldn’t pick which one was the cutest. Of course, Mimo remained the loveliest to her.
Leslie couldn’t help but wonder who crocheted them. The craftwork was flawless.
"Was it Old Madam Xu?" Leslie made a guess. Lifting the fox toy in her hands, she put it back where she took it, "Perhaps she loves making these toys. Hehe, surely Mia gets them too."
Looking at the crochet toys reminded Leslie of someone. A faint hint of sadness entwined on her smiling lips before it traveled to her heart.
He also enjoyed crocheting. She learned the craft from him but, she was not as skilled as him.
’I should pick it up again sooner or later. It’d be a waste if I stopped practicing it. Hurm, what should...’
"Oh? You’ve seen those?"
The sudden question thrown by Calix interrupted Leslie’s train of thought. She abruptly turned her head, finding that he was already heading toward her.
When did he come inside?
"Have Xan... I mean, your friend left?" asked Leslie, replying to Calix’s question with one of her own. Her gaze wandered briefly to the closed door.
Calix exhaled a sigh. Putting both hands on his hips, he narrated his woe, "Yours truly have to accompany him having lunch. We’ll just go somewhere nearby. Do you wanna follow us?"
Leslie blinked, "What for? I’m not hungry yet."
Did Calix want her to hover around their dining table?
If he invited her to eat together with them, Xander would be the second one who fainted. The male lead might be scared by floating chopsticks.
Calix scratched the back of his neck. He tried to explain his reasoning, "You can’t hold the book or play the game if I’m away, isn’t it?"
The thought crossed Calix’s mind when Xander insisted on them going out for lunch. Even though Edward prepared many novels and games, it was useless if Leslie couldn’t hold any of them.
Leslie was stunned before laughter broke out of her lips. Calix looked at her in confusion. He didn’t understand what made her chortle like that.
"Hehe, thanks for thinking about me," Leslie gently rubbed the corner of her left eye. With a slight tilt of her chin, she pointed to the TV, "I’ll be fine with that. You might return before a movie ends, en?"
One drama episode lasted around one hour. Leslie guessed that she should pick a movie. It would take two hours or more to reach the end.
"Oh, yeah... haha. You’re smart."
Without Leslie asking him for it, Calix switched on the TV. He opened the streaming platform before handing the TV remote to her. A wide ray of selections was displayed on the screen.
"Choose anything you wanna watch. I’ll return soon. I don’t want my ears to bleed from hearing my friend nagging me."
Calix’s words amused Leslie. She could tell how close he was to Xander from how he sounded. Despite saying something like that, his tone and expression were friendly.
Considering Calix’s personality, he was not the type who would pretend to get along with the people he disliked.
"Oh! I forgot to ask!" Leslie moved her eyes from the TV to the display of crochet toys, "Did your grandmother make these for you? All of them are so cute ah. Seems like you take care of them well."
Not a single speck of dust could be seen on the toys. They were still in their pristine condition.
But, Calix’s answer fell far from Leslie’s expectations, catching her off guard.
"I made them, not my grandma."
Wide-eyed in surprise, Leslie asked for confirmation, "What did you say? You crocheted them?"
CEO Xu crocheted all those toys? Not Old Madam Xu?
Calix nodded, a smirk lacing his lips. He briefly explained, "Well, I learned crocheting during my rehab."
