Chapter 40: His Friend Was Dead Set on Troubling Him Now

When Leslie was overwhelmed with cringe due to the four staff, Calix faced trouble of his own. The nuisance came in the form of an annoying friend.

Calix was diligently doing his work when he received an internal call from Edward. The latter announced a surprise visit of a well-known guest. The assistant’s voice echoed through the intercom line.

"Boss Xu, Boss Qin’s here."

Slightly stunned, Calix’s peaceful expression changed. That was not what he expected to hear from Edward. He glared at the office phone.

"Why is he here? Isn’t he a busy man?"

Instead of getting a reply from Edward, Xander’s voice reverberated from the end of the line. He declared, "Don’t run away. I’m going inside your office now."

Tut.

"..."

Calix blinked impassively when Xander quickly hung up the call. His friend deliberately refused to hear his response. The latter was dead set on troubling him right now.

The clock was almost pointing to twelve noon. It would be the official lunch hour for Xu International soon. But, the employees were allowed to have flexible meal times as long as they didn’t neglect their work.

Exhaling a long and deep sigh, Calix tried to guess the reason behind Xander’s unannounced visit. The latter rarely pulled this kind of stunt.

"Either he fights with Violet again, or..."

Bang!

Calix’s sentence stopped short when Xander made his grand entrance. The latter opened the door wide before striding inside. The hem of his black trench coat fluttered around him.

"Good afternoon, CEO Xu. Fancy having lunch with me?"

"..."

Calix held back from throwing the pen in his hand at Xander. He tossed it aside. The ballpen rolled on the desk before stopping.

Leaning on the backrest, Calix gave his friend an unwelcoming look. He eyed Xander from head to toe. The latter was already sitting on the couch.

"Did your invitation get rejected by Violet? I know you’d rather have lunch with her than me."

Xander’s expression tensed. Calix’s words were directly aimed at his sore spot. Narrowing his eyes, he silently glared back at his friend.

"She’s shooting out of the city," Xander smoothened the lapel of his jacket. His baritone voice echoed subduedly, "I’m here to have lunch with my recently married friend."

Calix scoffed, expressing that he didn’t believe Xander, "Hah! You’re here just to interrogate me!"

Rising to his feet, Calix slipped both hands inside the pocket of his pants. In a slow movement, he took a stride to where Xander was sitting. He slumped down on a single couch.

"Is Davin busy? You didn’t drag him here with you?" asked Calix, referring to their other friend.

Xander raised his thick brows, "He’s busy. Let’s go to Viluxs. You got married so hastily but we still need to celebrate it."

Viluxs was a luxury clubhouse owned exclusively by Xander. He didn’t open it under Qindom Group. Despite being in the middle of the bustling Silvercrest City, Viluxs was able to let the patrons feel close to nature.

Calix, Davin and their other friend always had gatherings in Viluxs. They enjoyed playing chess or other board games while exchanging stories.

Viluxs also became Xander and Violet’s usual meeting spot. The strict security at the clubhouse allowed the two public figures to be at ease during their dates.

"Thanks but, no," Calix shook his head, refusing Xander’s suggestion. Before his friend could protest, he quickly explained, "It’s the third day. I need to visit my wife’s maiden home. We’ll have dinner together tonight."

Xander frowned, "You? Visiting her maiden home? Even when she’s still in a coma?"

"It’s not just due to traditions," Calix tilted his head, "The Li family is my in-laws now. I still have to show some respect to them."

Xander rolled his eyes. The fact that Calix was already married hadn’t sunk properly into his mind. He couldn’t comprehend how ridiculous his friend’s stunt was.

Well, Xander did think like that despite his own suspicious actions made people raise their brows.

As the male lead of the story, he was hard to be pleased by anyone. His methods in getting the female lead also were mostly questionable.

Calix ignored the dissatisfied look on Xander’s face. He parted his lips to speak but, he paused even before saying anything. The corner of his eyes caught something.

Or, rather, someone.

’When did she return?’

Calix’s gaze moved beyond Xander’s shoulders. Leslie was standing near the closed door. He didn’t notice the time she floated inside the office.

Leslie also was staring at Calix. She briefly glanced at the back of Xander’s head before saying, "I’ll go inside the lounge."

Calix blinked, unable to reply to her verbally. Turning around, she moved toward his private lounge.

Calix’s eyes followed Leslie’s movement. Instead of hovering, she used her legs to walk on the floor. Still, she passed through the door without opening it.

Like a ghost.

"..."

Calix didn’t realize how weirdly Xander was looking at him now. The latter didn’t understand why his friend stared into the air before turning his neck to look at the opposite side of the office.

"Hey! What are you doing? Did you see a mosquito flying?"

Xander’s words instantly returned Calix’s attention to him.

"Haha... I thought I saw a ladybug," Calix laughed awkwardly.

How could he tell his friend that he was looking at his ghost wife passing through the solid wooden door?

While Calix was dealing with Xander, Leslie quietly stood near the door. The two men’s conversation was vaguely audible to her.

"Is that the male lead?" murmured Leslies, still in disbelief, "That Xander Qin?"

Leslie returned directly from the cafeteria as she stopped looking around the company. She didn’t expect that Calix was entertaining a guest.

The young man in the black trench coat was as devilishly handsome as Calix. But, he gave off a brooding vibe.

Like the domineering CEOs in dramas and inside romance novels.

Leslie shook her head, pushing her thoughts about Xander away. He most probably came here because he had certain business with Calix.

"Hurm... I’ll just stay inside."

Leslie threw her gaze around Calix’s private lounge. This place looked as comfortable as the bedroom at his mansion.

A queen-sized bed sat in the middle of the lounge, facing a huge smart TV. The sunlight was blocked by the thick curtain. The interior was brightened by the lights hanging on the ceiling.

"Oh, are those the novels?"

Leslie’s interest was piqued. She saw a stack of books and board games placed on a coffee table. She hurriedly went to sit there.

"...en?"

While Leslie was reading the titles, the corner of her eyes captured something familiar. She slowly turned her head to the right.

Leslie saw a five-tier bookshelf that was pushed close to the wall. She didn’t see it earlier due to the angle from the door.

"Mimo? What are you doing here? Did you just come?"

Leslie’s eyes were locked on the crochet red fox toy. Mimo was sitting on the second shelf from above.

"Mimo?"

Mimo replied nothing. Thinking how weird it was, Leslie reached out for the fox toy.

But...

Leslie’s brows furrowed once she realized the fox toy was simply an unmoving object.
