Chapter 409: Her Gossip Partner from Now On
No one touched the dishes yet. Evelyn was engrossed in telling her story while Calix and Leslie intently listened to her. The young lady’s voice resonated below the canopy of the fluttering leaves.
"Bella told me she thought long and hard after my visit but, her mom discouraged her. Well, Mrs. Yao was worried about the repercussions on her daughter so, it’s understandable."
Evelyn was genuinely surprised when she received a phone call from Bella last night despite waiting for it. The teenager started by apologizing for disappointing the former during her previous visit.
Yet, Evelyn quickly dismissed it. There was nothing Bella should apologize about. She understood the reason behind the teenager’s refusal.
Then, Bella came clean about her intention to contact Evelyn. The teenager said she wanted to press charges on Chase. The clarity and firmness of her voice expressed her resolve.
"I’m still scared but, for how long? He has to pay for what he has done to me. I am the victim here, not him."
Bella’s fiery determination satisfied Evelyn. She was more than happy to assist the teenager during this long and challenging journey. Bella’s courage earned her admiration.
Smiling at the memory of last night, Evelyn explained further, "After seeing what happened to Chase now, Bella wanna step forward and press charges on him. Mrs. Yao wasn’t convinced but, Bella’s persistent."
Mrs. Yao couldn’t help but worry about what might happen to Bella once her eldest child faced Chase. But, the teenager insisted.
Bella emphasized how much she regretted not bringing the trashy man to justice earlier. Now that Evelyn extended an olive branch, she was determined to grab it.
Chase was still facing a huge backlash from the public. Most of his fans had already turned their backs against him despite some still remaining to support the actor.
The man’s agency tried everything they could to salvage the situation. Yet, the more they tried to fight, the fiercer Evelyn’s team opposed them while keeping their identities secret.
Evelyn let out satisfied laughter. She happily stated, "Bella and her mother wanna come here once the summer break starts. I told them our people will go and get them."
Evelyn had promised to cover every cost required in this matter, including bringing the Yao family to Silvercrest City and their accommodations during each of their stay. She wished they would only focus on the most important issue.
Calix and Leslie exchanged a look after Evelyn paused from talking. Both of them were happy upon hearing the change in Bella’s decision.
Peeling his eyes away from Leslie, Calix spoke for the first time, "The trials will surely take time. They really need all the support they can get. Do you have other plans for them, Eve?"
Drawing a huge grin on her lips, Evelyn chuckled. She extended a hand to lift the lid of the pot sitting in the middle of the foldable table. An alluring aroma wafted in the air once she put the cover away.
"I wanna have a private chat with Bella. She’s a top student at her school and her province. But, it seems like she’s still worried about not getting any scholarship for her uni years soon."
The Yao family survived through the small food stall operated by Mrs. Yao and the part-time jobs done by Bella and her younger brother. They barely had enough to keep the roof above their heads and feed themselves, let alone save money.
"You can recommend her to our foundation," replied Calix while taking one of the plates. He scooped some food from the pot to the silverware, "Put all those funds into good use ah."
"Hehe, that’s my plan. I’ll talk directly to Bella once we meet again."
Leslie asked nothing. She understood what Calix and Evelyn were referring to.
The Xu family had a long-standing foundation, established by Old Madam Xu right after her marriage to the deceased Old Master Xu. The organization mostly focused on single-parent families, assisting them in every way possible.
Aside from helping the families by providing funds, the foundation also trained the parents in gaining beneficial skills. These activities would allow them to stand on their own feet.
"I hope everything will go well for Bella," Leslie looked from Evelyn by her side to Calix in front of her. Her smile expressed her sincerity, "It’ll be a hard battle for her emotionally..."
Calix and Evelyn nodded, agreeing with Leslie. Bella fought against her dread to step up but, her action didn’t mean all her fears had vanished.
She experienced such tremendous pain at a young age. Fortunately, she didn’t drown herself in the sea of regrets and sorrow.
The three people began enjoying lunch by the lake. The little dumpling was still napping inside the tent. She occasionally slept talk while rubbing her tummy.
"Oh ya..." Leslie looked up from her plate of dishes, her eyes falling on Evelyn’s side profile, "Does that man try to contact you? He suspects you’re behind his downfall, isn’t it?"
Leslie didn’t regularly follow entertainment news but, she used to read a few articles about Chase getting caught up in trouble after trouble. She noticed there was no mention of Evelyn’s name, much to her relief.
Leslie asked Calix about the possibility of Chase exposing his secret relationship with Evelyn to the media. After all, such a man couldn’t be trusted.
Calix’s answer baffled Leslie.
"That moron tried that several times. Eve’s team ruined all of his attempts."
The Xu family’s people behind Evelyn swiftly destroyed each of Chase’s tries. Leslie silently applauded their efforts and efficiency in keeping the young lady from being dragged into this mess.
Evelyn didn’t immediately reply to Leslie’s inquiry. She swallowed her food before rinsing her mouth with a few sips of an iced cold drink.
"He has tried until now. Hahaha! He was mad because I ruined his apartment. He quickly changed his tune when he realized he’s doomed."
Evelyn’s laughter rang across the backyard. That particular moment of her decorating Chase’s apartment with glitters would forever remain a funny memory in her mind.
Leslie softened her smile. Despite already getting the answer from Calix, hearing it directly from Evelyn made her feel better.
This young lady was one of her family now. She didn’t want to let go of anyone who showed her genuine affection.
"Well, if you wanna gossip with someone, feel free to call me, en?"
Leslie’s suggestion made Evelyn guffaw louder.
"Hahaha! Sure! I’ll give you all the gossip I know in the industry!"
"Hehe~ Okay!"
The two ladies laughed together. The hearty echoes harmonized with the melody of the leaves rustling and the water lapping.
Calix chuckled in helplessness once he realized his wife and younger sister had formed some kind of uncanny partnership.
Hahaha... Their alliance would screw him up if he ever tried something foolish ah.
Bzzt!
Sensing the vibration from the pocket of his pants, Calix quietly slipped out the phone before tapping on the notifications. Logan had just sent several messages.
’Oh?’
Curling his lips into a sneer, mirth danced in Calix’s eyes as he read the texts. He almost laughed upon knowing the contents.
Seemed like some shameless people dared to make a fuss outside.
But, it was not his problem ah.
After sending a short reply to Logan, Calix continued eating. Leslie and Evelyn were too preoccupied in their conversation to notice the ridicule in his eyes.
