Chapter 408: He Would Surely be Proud of His Sister
All four of them went to one of the annexes in the backyard to shower and change into dry clothes. None of them wanted to head inside the manor as they wished to continue staying by the lake.
"I’ll go and get lunch," said Calix as they walked out of the small annex. He glanced in the direction of the manor, "Aunt Wendy made a one-pot meal for us."
Calix requested Aunt Wendy to make a huge batch of lunch for all of them before telling her to take it easy today. He intended to handle dinner himself later. The housekeeper just needed to marinate some meat for the barbecue tonight.
Calix planned to fry some rice and grill the marinated meat by the glamping spot. Uncle Raymond had already prepared the necessary equipment.
Evelyn glanced from Calix to Leslie and Calliope before locking her eyes on her elder brother. Shrugging, she said, "Well, yours truly will help you. Let’s go inside together lest you have many things to bring alone."
Calix looked back at Evelyn in a deadpan manner. He deliberately sighed before responding, "For the record, we have a food trolley here."
"Urgh... Then, go by yourself ah," Evelyn rolled her eyes. She turned her attention to Leslie and Calliope, "Second Sister, Poppy, let’s go back to the tent. Let our new butler handle everything for us."
Leslie chuckled, followed by Calliope. Calix lightly kicked the back of Evelyn’s right leg in response, earning a glare from the young lady.
"Go and get our food ah, shoo."
"You go and eat grass. No food for you here."
"Blergh!"
Ignoring Evelyn who stuck her tongue out, Calix walked to the manor. Leslie and Calliope smilingly looked at the siblings’ banter.
"Second Sister, Poppy, come!"
"Yay!"
Evelyn held the wheelchair’s handles to push Leslie even after the latter said she could move it herself. Calliope followed by one side. The little one hummed to a song.
The blazing sun continued showering its bright light and intense heat all over the area. Fortunately, the breeze was cooler than usual.
Evelyn, Leslie and Calliope opted to head inside the tent instead of sitting on the picnic mat. The little dumpling threw herself on the soft mattress before letting out a long yawn.
"Poppy is sleepy..."
With her eyelids drooping, Calliope weakly rolled on the mattress. Exhaustion had just kicked in, most likely due to the little one draining her energy during swimming earlier. She played as if tomorrow wouldn’t come.
"You may take a nap first, Poppy. Mama will wake you up for lunch later..."
Leslie gently patted Calliope’s back once she sat on the mattress. The little dumpling was lying on one side, facing her mother. Evelyn was sitting cross-legged at the tent entrance.
"So sleepy ah... Poppy will dream of food first... Yummy..."
Calliope’s eyelids gradually shut as she murmured those words. She could no longer hold her sleepiness back.
"Hehe, sleep well, my darling."
Leslie smiled in helplessness. Thankfully her daughter had eaten some food in between swimming earlier. She wouldn’t be overly starving after waking up.
While patting Calliope’s back, Leslie quietly asked Evelyn, "Didn’t you say you have good news to share with... us? What is it?"
Unable to hold her curiosity back, Leslie couldn’t stop inquiring about the subject. She noticed a certain happy glow radiating from Evelyn’s face. The latter’s happiness didn’t simply stem from visiting her new young niece.
Bursting into laughing, Evelyn quickly covered her mouth, afraid of disturbing Calliope’s nap. She scooted closer to Leslie, her eyes glinting mischievously.
"Hehehe~ Second Brother isn’t here yet but, let me tell you."
Intrigued by the way Evelyn smiled, Leslie quickly nodded. She didn’t feel bad hearing gossip before Calix returned.
Evelyn leaned toward Leslie’s right ear. Holding one hand over her mouth, she whispered, "You knew that I..."
Leslie’s eyes widened in delight as soon as Evelyn gave out the key information within her news. She quickly bit her lower lip, being careful not to slip out any words of exclamation following her surprise.
"Eve... this is good," Leslie whispered after calming herself down. Joy flickered in her eyes, "You’ve done a good job, really."
"Hehe, thank you~ But, this isn’t up to me ah. You can say I’m simply a messenger."
Evelyn chuckled at the sight of Leslie’s satisfied look. She knew full well her sister-in-law would be as exhilarated as her. For sure, her second brother would feel the same.
"Still, you didn’t give up," Leslie smiled softly while patting Evelyn’s arm once, "Hehe~ Your brother will surely be so proud of you..."
Evelyn pretended to roll her eyes. Her action earned soft laughter from Leslie.
"I didn’t want to talk about this on the phone so, I came here. Isn’t this very good news?"
Leslie repeatedly nodded, "Yes! The best one!"
Evelyn’s smile deepened. She looked happier than before, something that delighted Leslie. She still remembered how devastated the former was a few weeks ago because of the trashy man’s actions.
Creak...
"Oh! That must be him!"
Evelyn quickly kneeled toward the entrance. She caught the sound of tires rolling on the grassy ground. A few dried leaves and twigs broke under the round rubbers.
Thinking the same as Evelyn, Leslie also scooted closer to the tent entrance. She poked her head out, looking in the direction of the manor.
"Food’s here!"
Calix’s voice rose above the peaceful silence around the lake. The man reappeared with a three-tier food trolley. A huge pot of food, empty plates and drinks occupied every level.
"Yes!"
Evelyn jumped out of the tent. She quickly helped Calix to place the dishes on the picnic mat.
Leslie glanced at the sleeping Calliope for one last time before slowly making her way to the two siblings. She simply walked due to the close distance.
"Second Sister, sit here!"
Evelyn giddily patted the space next to her. Calix glared at her but, getting ignored instead. Every dish had been served on the mat.
Letting out a chuckle, Leslie said while sitting, "Shouldn’t you tell your brother the thing... you’ve just mentioned?"
Calix raised his brows, "Oh? You’ve told your sister-in-law?"
The ladies exchanged a meaningful smile before they looked at the man.
Evelyn smiled smugly before saying, "You knew I met Bella before, right? She called me last night."
Calix blinked. His mind quickly recalled what Evelyn had informed him and Leslie before.
Under her brother’s curious gaze, Evelyn happily stated, "She agrees to face that scum in court!"
