Chapter 403: Consumed by the Fire of Anger

The hearty ambiance at Graceville Manor was a stark contrast to the grim atmosphere blanketing the Li family’s ancestral home.

As predicted, Old Madam Li and the others couldn’t sleep even a wink after what happened last night. Fights also ensued between them.

"The old madam hasn’t come out? She didn’t appear during breakfast either."

"She doesn’t want anyone to disturb her. Don’t you notice? They all looked so mad after coming back last night."

"Ah... yes, I realize it."

One of the maids whispered to her colleague after the latter came out of Old Madam Li’s room. Both of them stared at the closed wooden door with curiosity and concern plaguing their hearts.

Every staff at the ancestral home knew Old Madam Li, Geoffrey, Deena and Gladys went outside last night to have dinner with the Li family’s son-in-law, the heir of the Xu family.

The Li family’s matriarch seemed so happy to finally meet her grandson-in-law again after so long. Thus, everyone was caught off guard when Old Madam Li and the others returned in a bad mood.

Old Madam Li berated her favorite second son and daughter-in-law. She also did the same to her favored granddaughter. It was something none of the staff had ever heard or witnessed before.

"I wonder what happened last night," said the second maid. Crossing both arms over her chest, she whispered, "Did the Xu’s young master do something again?"

"Shh... Don’t stick your nose into their problem. Just act like usual. Have you forgotten what happened to Sarah?"

The first maid quickly stopped her colleague. The latter nodded as she shuddered in fright.

"En... you’re right."

Everyone in the ancestral home knew Calix teamed up with Irene to oust Sarah. The duo investigated the traitorous maid before finding out Sarah was responsible for Charlene’s staircase accident.

Sarah didn’t only commit that one crime. She also dared to steal precious jewelry and whatnot from her own young miss, resulting in her long stay in prison.

The solid evidence was all against her despite her continuously claiming her innocence.

Sarah was currently rotting behind prison bars. A few of them secretly visited the former for the sake of their old friendship. Witnessing Sarah’s haggard state terrified them.

"Well, let’s just inform Butler Yang about the old madam’s condition."

"Yes, we better do that."

The two maids quietly left the hallway, intending to seek for the butler. Eventually, the corridor was left empty.

Old Madam Li didn’t know her two maids sneakily talked about her and the others. Despite the clock closely approaching eleven o’clock, she was still dressed sloppily in her usual nightwear.

The elderly woman seemed to age ten tears overnight. A mixture of irritation, fear and anxiety took hold of her emotions. Bitterness seeped out from her glowering eyes.

Being alone in the vast bedroom, Old Madam Li sat in a bamboo chair. She bit her lower lip as the same thought was repeated in her chaotic mind. In her anxiousness, she continuously tapped her right hand on the armrest.

What had gone wrong?

What had gone wrong?!

"The baby you abandoned at the orphanage years ago is our biological child. For what you have done, the Xu family is now your archenemy."

Calix’s final words before leaving the room continued to haunt Old Madam Li. She was scared upon hearing it but, she still thought the young man was simply playing tricks on her.

But...

The Xu family’s attorney showed the concrete evidence in the form of DNA test reports. Every detail was printed on the papers, coming from the most reputable genome institute in the country.

Old Madam Li and Geoffrey were dumbstruck to know Calix and Charlene had located the child’s whereabouts.

"Miss Calliope is the biological child of Mr. Calix and Mrs. Charlene Xu. She is one of the treasured grandchildren of the Xu family."

When Old Madam Li and Geoffrey tried to protest by claiming the reports were fabricated, Mr. Wei quickly cut them off. His composure wasn’t shaken in front of the upset and enranged Li family.

"Old Madam Xu and Chairman Xu want me to express their disappointment in how the Li family mistreated Mrs. Charlene and Miss Calliope."

Mr. Wei relayed everything the Xu family wanted him to say. He didn’t give any of them a chance to speak until he was done.

"The Li family had committed child abandonment by forcibly taking the infant Miss Calliope from Mrs. Charlene. You deliberately left her at an orphanage and showed no signs of caring for her."

"Aside from that, what Miss Gladys Li has done is unforgivable. She purposely circulated rumors with the intention to smear Mrs. Charlene’s reputation. Her actions are akin to going against the entire Xu family."

"The Li family has to officially take Mrs. Charlene’s name off your registry. But, this issue won’t settle here. The Li family has a lot to answer to the Xu family from now on."

The longer the attorney conveyed the Xu family’s orders, the more terrified the Li family became. None of them expected this matter to escalate this quickly.

"Feel free to contact me directly through this number."

Mr. Wei left his business card before heading out of the private dining room. He acted as if he came here to deliver a billion-dollar will beneficial to the Li family instead.

Since then, Old Madam Li and Geoffrey had been blaming Rowan and Bianca for not knowing Calix was the father of Charlene’s child. They refused to believe when the husband and wife claimed they knew nothing.

"How could you not know? She’s your daughter!"

Rowan and Bianca had no answer. They simply thought they were not trustable enough for Charlene to reveal her secret romance with Calix Xu.

When Gladys finally returned to the dining room after being persuaded by Deena, Old Madam Li and Geoffrey lashed out at her next. The former’s irresponsible actions driven by jealousy only pour oil into the blazing fire.

Bam!

Grabbing the heavy book on the coffee table, Old Madam Li threw it to the floor. She abruptly rose to her feet, ferocity flashing in her eyes.

"This can’t do! I don’t believe them!"

Old Madam Li hastily called Geoffrey’s number using the landline. Before her son could say anything, she spat, "Find out the truth! Check if they did visit that orphanage or not!"

Old Madam Li had never cared about the orphanage where the baby was abandoned. She also didn’t remember many details about it.

"B-but, Mother, how about..."

"NOW!"

Old Madam Li slammed the phone to the receiver. Her chest heaved up and down as the fire of anger continued consuming her.
