Chapter 37: Our Maiden Hearts Need to Daydream
Calix led Leslie inside through the basement entrance lobby. They—actually only he—were welcomed by the bodyguards guarding the door separating the parking area and the lobby.
The two men dressed in black suits bowed at Calix. Their loud voice echoed heavily in the area as they unisonly greeted the young man.
"Good morning, CEO Xu! Have a good day!"
Calix casually waved one hand at them. His lips formed a lopsided grin, "Good work, you two. See you guys later."
"Yes, sir!"
Leslie silently watched Calix’s short interaction with the two bodyguards. With both hands inside the jacket pockets, the young CEO walked at a laid-back pace, assuming a lazy gait.
CEO Xu didn’t seem to be in a rush to get to his office at all. Being the big boss really had its advantage. He didn’t need to worry about time-stamping late.
Leslie unconsciously puckered her lips slightly. She couldn’t help but recall that one time she arrived late to work.
The particular memory remained bitter in Leslie’s mind.
That morning, the three-year-old Calliope had a bad fever. The little one contracted it due to the constant changes in weather.
Unsure of what should she do, the panic-stricken Leslie wanted to take emergency leave. She couldn’t bear leaving her sickly daughter under other people’s care.
But, Leslie’s request was ultimately denied. The vice principal also threatened to bring her to the disciplinary committee if she didn’t come.
"I don’t care about your sick child! Get your ass here!"
Having no choice, Leslie had to entrust Calliope to her next-door neighbor. Fortunately, the kindhearted auntie agreed to her last minute request.
Leslie reluctantly said goodbye to the crying Calliope. Because she arrived late at work, the vice principal viciously berated her. He even brought up her personal life.
Until now, his hurtful words stuck in her mind, piercing through her heart. Fortunately, the bleeding had long ceased.
"You’re a bad example! If you can’t take care of the child alone, don’t have one out of wedlock!"
"Do you think you’re the one with a family problem? Separate your private issues once you get to work!"
"Huh! Don’t influence our students with your terrible choices! Quit if you can’t commit!"
The vice principal would only show sympathy to people he found beneficial, the ones he could manipulate and use. Fortunately, Leslie still had a few colleagues who sided with her.
Sigh... Life as a single mother without support was difficult.
Leslie never regretted giving birth to Calliope even though she ended up being scorned by society. She also let her family heartlessly disown her.
Instead of focusing on pleasing the people who tended to negatively judge others, she better redirected it to the ones who cared for her.
’I wonder how this company treats its staff. Considering Calix’s character, it wouldn’t be bad, isn’t it?’
Sensing how quiet Leslie was, Calix subtly glanced at her. She didn’t look around the place as he expected. Her sullen countenance showed that she was thinking of something serious.
Eh? Did her mood change again?
Balling his hand into a fist, Calix covered his mouth. He pretended to cough before whispering, "Hey... are you okay?"
"...what?" Leslie stared at Calix back, resurfaced from her deep pool of thoughts, "Did you call me?"
Calix smiled in relief because Leslie was quick to answer him. He didn’t need to repeatedly try to get her attention.
Without responding to Leslie, Calix gestured at one of the elevators. The door was sliding open, showing an empty interior. Understanding what he meant, she swiftly stepped inside.
Leslie returned to her normal behavior. Looking around the elevator, she asked curiously, "Is this your private elevator?"
Calix grinned smugly, "Yes. No one else can use it besides me."
"Really?" Leslie raised her brows. She put both hands behind her back, "Only you and the people who follow you? How about your Chief Assistant Zhang?"
"My family members and anyone who gets my permission."
Leslie whistled softly. Her eyes shifted to the small screen showing the floor numbers. They were heading to the top.
"Your office on Floor 48, huh?"
"The one with the best view," replied Calix proudly.
Leslie chuckled softly, "I thought you’d enter through the main lobby. You know, walking inside with people waiting to greet you. Like the CEOs in the dramas."
"Hey, did you watch too many dramas?" Calix squinted his eyes. Crossing his arms over his broad chest, he said, "I don’t usually do that ah, too bothersome."
Laughter slipped out of Leslie’s mouth. Tilting up her head, she looked at Calix. Mischief swirled in her round eyes.
"Won’t you do that soon? I really wanna watch such a scene with my own eyes. Seeing it on TV isn’t good enough."
"Your mind gets corrupted ah," Calix let out a sigh. He answered impassively as if he was openly judging her, "Stop watching them too much. Do women really love those kinds of dramas?"
Most recently contracted young actors of XuGlam Entertainment started with domineering CEO dramas. They had a large market in the country.
Even though Calix knew of that fact, he sometimes still wondered about it.
Leslie clicked her tongue, giving Calix a side-eye, "CEO Xu, you know nothing. Our maiden hearts need to daydream. The real world is already so hard for us."
Calix snickered. He proudly exclaimed, "Hah! Okay, I’ll fulfill your daydream someday. You’ll see me, the real CEO walking down the lobby while looking so handsome and dignified."
Leslie’s eyes instantly brightened, showing her delight. Without saying anything, she kept nodding her head like a chicken pecking grains.
Calix laughed in helplessness. Before he was able to say anything further, a ding sound echoed inside the elevator.
"Oh, we’re here. Floor 48."
Once the door was opened, Calix strode out of the elevator. His appearance was welcomed with greetings from the staff of the secretarial department. They worked on the same floor as him.
"CEO Xu, good morning."
"Boss Xu, why don’t you wear a bold-colored suit like yesterday?"
"You smile so much more after getting married, Boss Xu."
"CEO Xu, where’s our wedding candies?"
Calix responded to each greeting with a huge smile plastered on his face. When he answered playfully, the staff burst into laughter before resuming their job.
Leslie was amazed to see that. Despite knowing how approachable Calix was, she thought he would be more formal with most of his employees.
Calix and Leslie walked past the open-office and private office areas. Further ahead was the former’s personal office.
Edward appeared as he walked out of the CEO’s office. He quickly spotted Calix.
"Boss Xu, you finally found your way here," Edward bowed at Calix. He kept a professional smile on his lips.
Tilting his head, Calix ignored Edward’s sarcasm, "Have you got everything I told you?"
"I have. But..." Edward’s face suddenly changed. He looked at Calix weirdly, "What do you wanna do with romance novels and..."
"Shut up. Follow me."
Calix deliberately widened his eyes, glaring at Edward. The latter sighed softly before heading back inside the office.
The excited Leslie didn’t think much about the two men’s conversation. Her focus was on stepping inside a CEO’s office for the very first time.
