Chapter 36: Welcome to Xu International, Mrs. Xu
When Calix began to drive again once the light turned green, he said, "Don’t fret too much over it, Leslie. It’s just one of my silly talking."
His voice broke the momentary silence, bringing her back to reality.
Pursing her lips, Leslie quietly looked at Calix’s side profile. His countenance had returned to normal, showing no hints of anger or frustration. His tone also was mellow like usual.
"For you to keep thinking about it... surely it’s not silly talking," Leslie replied weakly. She screwed the thermal flask lid before putting it back into the paper bag.
Calix’s lips curled up. He pulled the steering to the left, maneuvering his car to enter an intersection. His eyes remained on the road as he responded.
"I’ve come to terms with it. If I let it interfere with my life, wouldn’t it be a waste? Coming out of a coma means having a second chance to live, Leslie. No need to cut my joy away by overthinking."
Leslie let Calix’s thoughts sink into her mind. She found no fault in them. It was true that he wouldn’t miss the joy of feeling alive again by not probing more than necessary about the accident.
"I hope you’ll wake up soon, Leslie. I do."
Calix spoke again when Leslie was drowned in her own contemplations. The sincerity in his voice gently brushed a part of her heart.
Carving her lips into a beautiful arc, Leslie took the chance to tease Calix, "Really? If I wake up, you’ll have to find another wife in a coma."
Calix burst out laughing. Shaking his head a few times, he replied with laughter still bubbling from his lips.
"Haha, there’s no need ah. What if I get another ghost wife like you?"
Leslie blinked, amused by Calix’s response. In the next second, her giggles blended with his laughter, reverberating harmoniously inside the car.
Yet, Leslie’s laughter stopped short once she heard Calix’s next words.
"I’ll do what you requested last night."
"..."
Widening her eyes in surprise, Leslie stared unblinkingly at Calix. Her heart skipped a beat, unable to believe what he had just said.
Calix’s chuckle filled the momentary silence. He repeated while also explaining more.
"I’ll help you look for that child. Her name is Calliope, right? I’ll have my men find her among all the orphanages in the country. Tho, it’ll surely take time."
Leslie unconsciously grasped her knees. Her eyes were still locked onto Calix’s side profile. Tremors spread on her lips as she couldn’t utter coherent words.
This came out of nowhere.
No, she did foresee this. But... having an expectation was different than having her request actually granted.
Leslie coughed once, forcing her words out.
"C-Calix... you’re... is it true?"
Calix immediately perceived the doubt laced in Leslie’s trembling voice. She sounded so unsure. Softening his smile, he resumed speaking.
"I won’t ask you for details. At least, not for now. Let’s focus on looking for the child first."
Calix’s promise was slowly cemented into Leslie’s mind. Tears began pooling in her eyes without her realizing it, threatening to roll down her cheeks.
Leslie quickly withdrew her gaze from continuing to stare at Calix. She pretended to be interested in the view outside of the car.
Clasping her hands together, Leslie tried hard not to be too overwhelmed with the sprouting buds of happiness. She told herself that this was just the beginning of her journey.
Still...
"Calix, thank you."
Without looking at Calix, Leslie softly whispered her gratitude. In the enclosed space, her words gently reached him.
"I have my own army to mobilize, you know?" Calix’s tone had a hint of a teasing smile, "So, just sit back and relax. Let them do all the searching."
"...what? Haha! Hahaha!"
Unable to stop herself, Leslie broke into laughter. An image of Calix ordering his men around popped into her mind.
Haa... She felt so good knowing that CEO Xu agreed to help her.
For the rest of their journey, Leslie and Calix only shared random conversations. She mostly listened to his story regarding his work and the environment at the company.
"Edward gossiped with me the other day. Some employees said they heard weird noises on Floor 30 at midnight," Calix lowered his tone, pretending to be mysterious, "Do you think you can see the ghosts if there are any?"
Calix scoffed when Edward passed the stories to him. He simply told his chief personal assistant that such invisible entities didn’t exist.
Who knew that his own words slapped him hard on the face now?
Leslie laughed in disbelief. This man kept asking whether she could see ghosts or not. She held back the urge to smack the back of his head.
"If I can see ghosts, surely I’d see some last night, wouldn’t I? I slept in the garden."
"Haha... that’s true," Calix answered awkwardly, "You slept alone in the dark garden. Alone."
If the ancestral home had any ghosts lingering around...
Calix was unsure how would he pretend not to know about it. He was thankful to hear that from Leslie.
Perhaps the ghosts were frightened by his nagging iron lady of a grandmother ah. That could be the most plausible reason. Perhaps she scared all of their ancestors away.
Leslie had nothing to say. She would just accept that Calix’s thought process was simply incomprehensible to her most of the time.
"Oh, we’re here."
Calix’s announcement brought Leslie to focus back on her surroundings. She looked out of the front car window. They were approaching the huge compound of Xu International in the center of Silvercrest City.
The vast acres of Xu International had a high-rise building of forty-eight floors. A meticulously cared-for yard surrounded the office tower. Several smaller buildings were built in the yard.
Gasping, Leslie couldn’t believe how big this place was. Her eyes widened in doubt. She quietly watched the outside when Calix’s car speeding down the road within the compound.
"Y-you... Won’t you get lost? This is so huge ah!"
Leslie’s words tickled Calix’s heart, prompting him to guffaw. He glanced at her briefly.
"This is our new main headquarter. My father moved our operations here seven years ago. The old place couldn’t accommodate our growing business."
Constructing and perfecting such a gigantic place took years of effort. But, relocating here was the best decision.
Leslie let out a sigh, "I don’t think I can wander to every floor."
Calix burst out laughing again. Shaking his head in helplessness, he moved his car to the basement parking. The bodyguards had already recognized his vehicle.
After parking the car in his designated spot, Calix unbuckled the seatbelt. Grinning mischievously at Leslie, he gestured his palm to the outside.
"Welcome to Xu International, Mrs. Xu. As much as my employees wanna see you, they can’t do it yet."
Leslie shuddered. She sighed in relief, "I don’t need such an attention."
Despite saying so, Leslie couldn’t help but think of a familiar scene that often happened in the CEO novels.
Whenever the female lead came to visit the male lead at the office, especially if it was for the first time, her presence would attract everyone’s attention without fail.
Haha... One day, she wouldn’t experience that, right?
That kind of spectacle should only be reserved for the female lead of this world.
