Win My Husband Over to Find My Child -
Chapter 35: Perhaps He’s Already Dead
Chapter 35: Perhaps He’s Already Dead
About him? The one related to the accident that led to him being in a coma?
Leslie unconsciously pressed harder on the unfinished bun. Blinking slowly, her mind began conjuring several possibilities.
What did Calix really experience during those hard times? Was this a setup by the author?
’No, I shouldn’t think like that.’
No matter what, the fact remained that Calix had been tormented. The jagged scar was a physical proof of his suffering.
’It’d be more than painful...’
As how Calliope felt before she breathed her last after being impaled by the broken steel rod.
Shaking her head, Leslie quickly chased the bloody image of her daughter dying from her mind. Shivers ghosted down her spine.
"Do you... remember everything?" lowering her voice, Leslie cautiously asked Calix, focusing again on him, "That accident... was there anything weird before it happened?"
Calix’s smile was imbued with helplessness. He admitted, "Actually, I don’t recall much. It was so chaotic. I just remember some of it."
While maneuvering the car on the expressway, Calix started telling his story from the beginning. The blurred images of his past memories resurfaced in his mind.
"Six years ago, I was on my way home after attending a banquet. The road was icy. It’s late January."
The banquet was held by another family intending to celebrate the arrival of the brand new year. Calix went there on behalf of his father Andrian. His friends, Xander and Davin also attended the event.
Leslie had forgotten about the bun in her hands. Her full attention was on Calix.
Realizing it, Calix jokingly said, "Hey, finish your bun ah. Drink the soy milk too. No need to forget about them."
"...okay. I’ll eat."
Putting the bun inside the box, Leslie grabbed the thermal flask. The soy milk retained its heat yet, the temperature was bearable for one to drink it.
Calix slowed down when two cars from the next lane entered his. He took a brief look at Leslie before continuing.
"En... I felt tired so, I rested in a room. I left the hotel before dawn. You know how slippery the roads could be, right? I lost control of my car. But, the real reason was the faulty brake."
"...what?"
Surprised, Leslie gasped. She thoughtlessly tightened her hands around the thermal flask. Her eyes didn’t move away from Calix’s side profile.
"The brake was faulty? How could it be? I mean... was it a coincidence, or..."
Leslie trailed off, unable to finish her words. She pursed her lips tight, waiting for Calix to reaffirm or deny her unspoken assumption.
"Earlier, you asked whether it’s pre-meditated or not, right?" Calix’s smile had a hint of a smirk, "Hurm, I was already so famous back then. So, some people tried to oust me. They almost succeeded tho."
Leslie frowned as she listened to how casually Calix spoke about the matter. No matter what, the accident still hurt him enough to be in a coma.
If things went according to the mastermind’s wish, Calix would have long been dead. Certainly, there was something important the perpetrator wanted to achieve.
"Did you..."
Calix abruptly cut off the rest of Leslie’s words.
"I woke up after six months. Many things had changed but, we hadn’t caught who caused my accident."
Leslie initially wanted to ask about the culprit’s identity. But, Calix beat her to it by bringing up the matter himself.
"Until now, you don’t know who was it?" Leslie lowered her tone, worries brimming in her voice, "Were there separate attempts after you woke up?"
Calix shook his head. Even though only his side profile was visible to Leslie, she perceived faint anger glowering in his eyes. His smile right now was not the usual friendly one she often saw.
"Perhaps he’s already dead since nothing happened."
Leslie pointed out nothing about Calix wishing for the mastermind’s demise. Perhaps because she had experienced death once, she understood why he thoroughly hated the one who almost caused his own end.
"Fortunately, you’re still alive," Leslie exhaled a sigh. Her downcast gaze fell on the thermal flask, "If not, your family might not be as happy as right now. Mia... the little one would only know her second uncle through other’s memories."
Leslie was unconsciously reminded of the day she and Calliope met their deaths. She couldn’t help but think what would happen if only one of them survived the wreckage.
If she died, Calliope had to mature earlier than her age in order to endure the harsh world without any family members left.
If Calliope was the one who died, Leslie knew that she would forever live plagued with the guilt of not being able to save her only child.
Both scenarios would unintentionally shove either of them into a long and dark tunnel. Perhaps, one with no exit.
If that were to happen...
"...ah! Sorry, I blindly assumed things."
Leslie belatedly realized that she was projecting her own situation onto Calix’s position. The man replied nothing until he stopped at the red lights.
"Leslie, there’s something I haven’t told anyone about. But, I think I’ve got to let you know."
Calix’s tone was firm, expressing how serious he was right now. After pulling the hand brake, he turned to look at Leslie’s confused gaze.
"Are you certain?" Leslie hesitated, asking Calix to rethink his decision, "You want me to know, are you sure?"
Their relationship was good despite only knowing each other in a few days. But, Leslie still thought Calix shouldn’t blindly trust her with something he deemed a personal secret.
"I won’t backtrack," Calix reassured Leslie. He glanced at the red light in front before once again staring at her, "Before I give you my answer about your request last night, I believe I need to tell you this first."
Leslie’s breath hitched. She unconsciously enlarged her eyes as curiosity and worry flickered in them. Countless thoughts laced with different emotions arose in her mind.
Why did he want her to know this secret before deciding on her plea?
What if she might use it against him someday?
Still, her desire to know about it overcame her hesitation.
"What... what is it?"
Calix tilted his head, pondering how to make it easy to understand. After a momentary silence, he finally let out the one thing he had been keeping to himself all this time.
"I don’t know whether you’ll go through this too or not later. But, after I woke up from the coma, sometimes I feel as if this body isn’t mine."
Leslie froze, unable to believe Calix’s words.
"W-why... why do you feel that way? You think... your body isn’t yours?"
"Sounds creepy, huh?" Calix shrugged, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, "But, it’s true. I wonder if something happened when I was unconscious."
Leslie bit her lower lip. She was afraid of saying something she would regret as soon as it came out of her mouth.
This...
If what Calix said was true, was this the aftereffect following his coma?
Did the author plan something for his character?
What if there were no intervention at all?
As Leslie was drowned in her own thoughts, she didn’t notice how intently Calix was looking at her.
’One more thing, I haven’t told her one more thing.’
Calix couldn’t bring himself yet to tell Leslie that before, he used to see her in his dreams.
