Chapter 357: Why Don’t You Change Your Career?
Frozen upon her realization, Leslie unconsciously hid her face in the crook of Calix’s neck. Her ears caught the faint murmurs of the water ripples and his chuckles, alongside something more profound.
Was it the echo of her erratic heartbeat? Or, did the pounding sound belong to him?
Leslie didn’t know the answer. She quietly perceived the warmth of Calix’s body despite being half-submerged in the cool pool water.
Did his body heat course through her veins with the sole purpose of keeping her warm?
With his right hand under her knees and his left one supporting her back, his posture didn’t falter under the additional weight. He remained standing straight on the pool floor, the water barely touched his chest.
The waves gently glided through them, forming ripples. The summer sun beamed through the clear water, casting shimmers and shadows at the same time.
Leslie still buried her face in the crook of Calix’s neck. Being this close to him allowed her to sense the faint vibrations coming from his chest as he continued to laugh softly.
"You... are you just going to hold me like this?"
Mustering up her courage, Leslie pulled away slightly from Calix. She almost stuttered. Her limpid eyes met his, seeing the mellowness in the way he smiled at her.
Calix raised one corner of his lips. Tilting his head, he raised his eyebrows. The shimmering droplets under his left eye made his two small moles more pronounced.
"Why? Can’t I? Does Mrs. Xu have something against her husband being romantic?"
"...is this romantic to you?" Leslie shot a question back to Calix, deliberately frowning at him, "Are you acting like... the male lead from a romance drama?"
"Hahaha! You’re right ah!"
Throwing his head back, Calix laughed out loud. A flustered Leslie looked at him in disbelief.
Somehow, the playful CEO Xu appeared more youthful than usual as his childlike innocence gushed out.
He chortled freely as if he was truly enjoying this little moment between them. The echoes of his laughter spread in the air, being dispersed by the passing breeze.
"What... what’s so funny?" Leslie smacked Calix’s back, "Why don’t you audition for a male lead’s role... in any drama? Seems like you wanna change... your career ah..."
The news of Calix Xu of Xu International letting go of his CEO role for the sake of being an actor would surely make headlines. Fans would easily fall for a devilishly handsome man with various good qualities like him.
"Nah, I’ll destroy others’ money pots ah," Calix shook his head, disagreeing with Leslie’s playful suggestion. Once again snickering, he said, "Plus, I only want to bridal carry my wife, not other women."
"..."
As if those words struck her heart just to melt it, Leslie buried her heated face in the juncture connecting Calix’s shoulder and neck. She smacked him again but, the force this time was very light.
"Hehe, are you touched, Mrs. Xu?"
Playfulness laced in Calix’s voice. Soft laughter slipped out of his mouth, unknowingly resonating with Leslie’s heart pounding.
"...a little bit."
Leslie replied quietly, her voice muffled by Calix’s chest. The man chuckled as he imagined her face being as red as a cooked shrimp now.
Calix caught movements from a corner of his eyes. Turning his head slightly in the direction, he saw Evelyn carrying Calliope in her arms. Both of them were already wrapped in thick towels.
Evelyn and Calliope also looked at Calix. The little one covered her small mouth with both hands as if afraid of slipping out even a word.
’Where are you going?’
Calix mouthed, knowing Evelyn could perfectly catch what he was trying to say.
Evelyn grinned, her eyes glinting with mischief. She pointed to Calliope before gesturing to the outside of the rooftop pool area.
’I’m going away with Poppy. Enjoy your sweet moment.’
Before Calix could reply, Evelyn stealthily headed toward the entrance. She and Calliope vanished from the pool area within seconds.
The incredulity in Calix’s eyes mellowed into helplessness. He held back from laughing out loud because of Evelyn’s antics.
Now, he was left alone with his wife.
Looking down, Calix laid his eyes on the side of Leslie’s head. His smile softened seeing her being all bashful.
The water continued to ripple on the surface. The soft breeze carried the distant murmurs of the leaves rustling in the yard below.
"Leslie, I want to ask."
Calix’s voice echoed above her head, pulling Leslie out of her trance. She also perceived faint tremors from his chest, most likely happened because of him talking.
"Yes?"
Despite knowing her cheeks were still red, Leslie slowly raised her forehead from Calix’s chest. She wanted to look at him, to see his mellow smile as he talked to her.
Calix didn’t realize relief imbued in his smile as Leslie finally stopped hiding her face. Her cheeks bloomed with a red color. Seeing her blush reminded him of the red roses he got for her the other day.
"...what do you wanna ask?"
Leslie’s voice sounded timid but, she kept her eyes locked into Calix’s. Somehow, she sensed something was different in his relaxed tone.
His gaze was soft like the spring breeze, the one she liked to see. Yet, there was a hint of something firm in the way he looked at her right now.
"I wonder how far..."
"A-achoo!"
"..."
Horrified, Leslie quickly covered her mouth. She didn’t expect to sneeze right before Calix finished his words.
"S-sorry... what did you wanna say? I... achoo!"
Leslie sneezed again. Her nose tip gradually became red.
"Let’s get you out."
Laughing helplessly, Calix knew he had no choice aside from bundling Leslie up with towels. Even though the weather was hot, she was still exposed to the wind. Her soaked dress couldn’t keep her warm.
"Sorry..."
"Hahaha, what are you sorry about? I shouldn’t keep you in the wind like that."
Calix sat Leslie on the edge before he quickly climbed out of the pool. Once again he carried Leslie, this time to put her on the sun lounge chair.
"Drink some water."
Calix handed Leslie a glass of mineral water after wrapping her in a huge and thick towel. He proceeded to sit behind her. Grabbing another towel, he started to dry her hair.
"Calix, what did you want to... ask just now?"
Leslie turned around slightly, watching Calix focus on drying her long hair.
A smirk was curled on Calix’s lips. Staring back at her, he replied, "Next time. I’ll ask you next time, en?"
"...okay."
Leslie was disappointed but, she couldn’t help but think if their current situation right now was no longer suitable. Still, she wondered what kind of question Calix wanted to ask.
