Chapter 345: Did Papa Forget Again?

Chapter 345: Did Papa Forget Again?

The dream was short.

Calix recalled himself buying yarn balls in the colors of reddish-orange, white and black. He also remembered the old lady telling him to craft something from the yarn.

"Young man, think of your loved ones when you do it."

The dream ended with him leaving the small craft store near the temple, intending to go back to the apartment. Anticipation bloomed in his heart as he was eager to show the yarn balls to the woman.

"...lix? Calix?"

The familiar voice slipped into Calix’s mind, bringing him out of his trance. Blinking, his eyes regained their clarity. Two faces entered his line of sight.

"Oh, did you say something?"

Calix looked at Leslie before his gaze went to Calliope. The mother and daughter were staring back at him. None of them focused on their breakfast.

"Are you still tired? When did you... go to bed last night?"

Leslie’s voice was imbued with concern. Tilting her head slightly, she carefully looked at Calix’s face. Somehow, he looked less energetic this morning.

The clock pointed to a quarter to eight. Calix was already in his office attire. He woke up for his morning run as usual around six. This time he didn’t take Calliope along.

"At one," Calix curled up his lips, trying not to look too distracted by something. He swiftly changed the subject, "Do you want seconds? How about you, Poppy?"

"I’m full already..."

Leslie shook her head, politely refusing Calix’s offer while Calliope had a different reaction altogether.

"Poppy want seconds!"

Calliope happily pushed her bowl to Calix. Despite eating two plump steamed buns, she wanted more of the delicious chicken and egg porridge Aunt Wendy made. Not to forget the yummy soy milk.

Laughing in helplessness, Calix took the bunny pink bowl. He scooped some of the porridge before returning it to the little dumpling.

The alluring scent of the porridge wafted in the air, easily luring one’s appetite.

"Thank you, Papa~"

Calliope sweetly thanked Calix, earning laughter from him.

"Eat slowly ah. Don’t choke on the porridge."

"Poppy know ah~"

Despite saying that to Calix, Calliope seemed to forget her words as soon as she ate a spoonful of the porridge. Her little mouth was smeared with the white gruel.

Calix grabbed one of the fried dough sticks. Pulling a small part of it, he dipped the dough stick into his cup of soy milk before starting to chew it.

Calix’s mind wandered to last night, thinking his theory was somewhat true. He dreamed again as he slept together with Leslie and Calliope.

But... why?

Why did he dream of the man and woman when his wife and daughter were present?

Inwardly shaking his head, Calix pushed the thoughts to the back of his mind. He better focus on Leslie and Calliope right now instead of entertaining his doubts.

"Have you changed the gauze?" Calix lifted his eyes from the cup of soy milk, looking at Leslie, "Do you feel more pain than yesterday?"

Calix still remembered the light injury on Leslie’s calf. Mrs. Su mentioned she would clean his wife’s wounds before leaving. It was Mrs. An’s shift next.

"I feel the same..." Leslie smiled, recalling the incident from yesterday, "Mrs. Su helped me to change it... Ms. Chen will look at them too..."

Leslie had already informed about the wounds to her physical therapist. Ms. Chen replied, saying they needed to check the said injuries before deciding on the changes to the future rehab sessions.

Calix nodded, satisfied with what he heard. He wanted to say more but, he didn’t want to be perceived as nagging Leslie so early in the morning.

Slightly over eight, Calix headed toward the main entrance. Leslie and Calliope tagged along, wanting to send him off to work.

"Papa will go now," Calix picked up the little Calliope. Letting out laughter, he smooched the little one’s chubby cheeks, "Listen to Mama well, en? Papa will return this evening."

"Hehehe, okay~" Calliope hugged Calix’s neck, patting her father’s back with her small palms, "Bye-bye, Papa."

"En, bye-bye."

Lowering Calliope to the floor, Calix looked at Leslie next. He coughed awkwardly at the sight of the lady’s meaningful smile.

"W-well, I’ll go now."

"Be careful when driving..."

Leslie chuckled, amused by the funny look on Calix’s face. She could tell what he was thinking.

Without a doubt, he remembered what happened before he went to work yesterday morning.

Calix grabbed the briefcase, stiffly waving at Leslie. He tried to overlook the way Calliope was gaping at him. Her round eyes stared at him without blinking.

"Papa."

Calix froze, halting his steps right before the open door. He could already imagine what the little dumpling wanted to say to him. Still, he didn’t have the heart to ignore her calling.

"...yes, Poppy?"

Frowning, Calliope put her hands on her hips. Raising her chin high, she stared at Calix who was way taller than her. The angry little dumpling seemed dissatisfied with her father.

"Where’s Mama’s kiss? Papa forget!"

"...I didn’t forget ah."

Leslie covered her mouth, almost laughing out loud. She couldn’t help but recall yesterday’s morning.

Calix kissed Calliope’s cheeks like just now, only to be reprimanded by the little munchkin because he didn’t do the same to Leslie.

"Papa, why no kiss Mama?"

Under Calliope’s expecting eyes, Calix had to relent. He simply brushed his lips on one side of Leslie’s face. She also returned the same gesture to appease the little one.

And... he had to do it again.

Bending down, Calix held his breath as he slowly got closer to Leslie in the wheelchair. Calliope kept looking at them as if she refused to do anything before seeing it with her own eyes.

Leslie’s sweet floral scent lured Calix in, much to his shame. He inched closer and closer before he finally left a light kiss on her right cheek.

"...I’ll go to work now."

Leslie nodded. Raising one hand, she touched Calix’s face before doing the same. Her fingertips lingered on his skin as her soft lips grazed his cheek.

"Be safe..."

"...yeah."

With his head in the clouds, Calix stiffly walked out of the door, heading to his car. He swore the warmth on his cheek where Leslie kissed him earlier remained until he reached the office.
