Chapter 344: Shouldn’t He Have Already Died?
After taking off his reading glasses, Calix pinched the space between his eyebrows. He let out a deep sigh, driven by his exhaustion.
The clock pointed to a quarter before one in the morning. A comforting silence shrouded the entire manor as most people were already sleeping save for Calix. He stayed up to finish some of his work.
"Time for bed, I guess."
Calix stood up, pushing the swivel chair backward. He did a couple of stretches to alleviate the numbness after sitting for too long. The work desk was still messy from the laptop, piles of papers and pens.
’They should be sleeping already, en?’
Calix’s mind wandered to Leslie and Calliope. The little dumpling fell asleep not long after taking a bath. As requested, she slept in Leslie’s chamber instead of her own princess bedroom.
Calix stayed with Leslie for a while even after Calliope was already asleep. They shared a simple chat about their day. He left for his home office after checking her minor injuries once more.
Leslie hadn’t gone to sleep when Calix left. She wanted to listen to some audiobooks before bed.
Shrugging, Calix began to tidy up the mess scattering on the huge work desk. After grabbing his smartphone, he quietly walked out of the home office. A quiet hallway welcomed him on the outside.
Calix’s footfalls resounded faintly with each step landing on the marble floor. Warm white lights sprinkled on his back as he continued striding toward Leslie’s bedroom.
"Hello, Mrs. Su."
Calix saw Mrs. Su in the lounge on the second floor. The private nurse was reading a book while sitting comfortably on the couch. A pot of coffee and some snacks were served on the low table.
"Mr. Xu, going to bed now?"
Mrs. Su responded to Calix’s greeting. The man stopped him when she wanted to stand up.
"Yeah, just finished with my work," Calix smiled faintly. Lines of exhaustion marred his face, "Continue your reading."
"Yes. Good night, Mr. Xu. Rest easy."
Calix nodded once before resuming his steps. Mrs. Su picked up the book again. Her eyes lingered on the man’s back, seeing him disappear inside Leslie’s bedroom.
"They really look like a happy family now," uttered Mrs. Su. A smile was carved on her lips.
As Mrs. Su and Mrs. An spent more time working for the Xu husband and wife, they were somewhat aware of Calliope’s origin.
Like Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond, the two private nurses were pleased to see the good bond between the spouses and their newly-found daughter.
Smiling to herself, Mrs. Su’s eyes fell on the paragraph she hadn’t finished reading.
Calix didn’t know what was on Mrs. Su’s mind. Stepping inside Leslie’s bedroom, he saw her and Calliope snuggling on the bed.
"Haa... hope Poppy won’t kick her injured calf."
Standing opposite the huge bed, Calix stared at the sleeping mother and daughter in helplessness.
Even though Calliope was generally smaller than Leslie, the little one’s sleeping habit was kind of rough. She could even roll upside down instead of sleeping in a normal posture.
Calix went to wash his face and brush his teeth in the washroom. He quietly stepped on the floor, afraid of waking the mother and daughter up.
To save the hassle of him coming and going from Leslie’s bedroom to his, Calix had a spare toothbrush here. The same went for Calliope despite her bedroom being just across the hallway.
Calix glanced at the toothbrush holder. Seeing his blue toothbrush, Leslie’s light purple and Calliope’s pink ones cast a smile on his lips.
’A family of toothbrushes.’
Chuckling at himself, Calix walked out of the washroom. He was amused to see Calliope’s posture change within a span of a few minutes.
’Tsk, this one. I’m really tempted to wrap her into a burrito.’
With one hand holding the crochet fox toy, Calliope grabbed a corner of Leslie’s nightgown with the other. Her short legs splayed in unnatural angles, making Calix question the little one’s flexibility.
Calix lay on the bed, getting ready to sleep. He adjusted Calliope’s position before pulling the blanket to cover the little dumpling and Leslie. None of them seemed to be aware of his presence.
"Good night."
Calix’s whisper echoed softly in the quiet bedroom, harmonizing with the sound of Leslie and Calliope’s rhythmic breathing. Closing his eyes, he wished sleep would come easily to him.
’Will I dream of them again?’
The thought echoed in Calix’s mind as he gradually lost consciousness. He received the answer not long after he fell asleep.
Instead of the small apartment, Calix found himself standing on a temple ground this time.
’Why a temple? I’m sure this is one of those dreams?’
The surroundings were new to Calix but, he believed he was in those dreams again.
Calix’s looked from his left and right without turning his head. His eyes landed on the gigantic building of the temple, flaunting its rich architecture from the olden days.
Passersby walked past the elaborately decorated gates. Two similar-looking statues of guardian deities stood on both sides of the gates.
’Shouldn’t I have already died?’
Calix shuddered as the frightening memory of him dying before resurfaced in his mind. He couldn’t help but wonder if this dream showed the man’s memory long before his death.
’En?’
Calix’s body moved on its own as he walked in a direction. Knowing he couldn’t stop even if he wanted to, he admitted defeat. Each of his footsteps fell on the stone-paved pathways.
Calix walked down the high staircase, seemingly leaving the grand temple behind. He saw several rows of shops on both sides of the walkway near the temple staircase.
’...what? A craft store?’
Unable to believe his eyes, Calix’s body stopped opposite a small store selling craft items. Words flowed out of his mouth, sounding completely different from his actual voice.
"How much is this?"
Pointing to small stacks of yarn balls, he asked the old lady owning the shop. The shopkeeper stood on a stool, her back hunching.
"Young man, they’re cheap, very cheap," replied the old lady with a smile, "Make something out of them. They’ll grant your wish, you know?"
Shivers ghosted down Calix’s spine. He didn’t know why the old lady’s smile and words caused such a chilly sensation.
