Chapter 343: Wanting to Know the Answer to His Nonsensical Theory
Calix swiftly treated Leslie’s injury. He got the first-air kit from the kitchen before proceeding with the treatment. He started by cleaning the wounds with antiseptic, preventing them from infection.
Fortunately, Leslie only had bruises from her calf bumping onto the coffee table. She was lucky the heavy furniture didn’t topple over.
Mrs. An and Aunt Wendy were there when the incident happened. The two older ladies’ quick reflexes saved both Leslie and Calliope.
"I think they’re just superficial but, we better get some professional advice," said Calix as he put the last tape over the gauze covering Leslie’s bruises.
"I’ll talk to Ms. Chen when she comes tomorrow..." Leslie brought up her physical therapist’s name, a helpless smile carving on her lips, "She can look into my... situation and advise according to it..."
"...alright."
Calix’s one-word agreement relieved Leslie.
"They’ll be gone soon... I don’t think my muscle tore..."
Calix was adamant about bringing Leslie to the hospital or calling the family doctor to check on her. Knowing he wouldn’t budge out of concern, she tried to get him to compromise.
"Avoid walking for now," Calix exhaled a sigh. Closing the lid of the first-air kit, he glanced at Leslie, "I’ll carry you. Get Mrs. An and Mrs. Su to help you in the bathroom."
"Okay..."
Leslie nodded once, understanding she shouldn’t be stubborn when Calix accepted the compromise.
Rising to his feet, Calix said while taking off his suit jacket, "Let’s go to the backyard. If not, Poppy will come looking for us."
"Hehehe, you’re right..."
Leslie grabbed the red roses bouquet and the chocolate box before Calix carried her to the wheelchair. She smelled the flowers again. The sweet scent deepened her smile.
Seeing Leslie’s action prompted Calix to smile. He bent down, placing one arm across the back of the wheelchair, "Do you like them?"
"Hehe, of course..." Leslie tilted up her chin, staring back at Calix with a pair of joyful eyes, "I love them. I might... dry the roses like the hyacinths and tulips..."
Aunt Wendy helped Leslie dry some of the tulip and hyacinth petals she received from Calix before[01]. The housekeeper was well-versed in resin art thus, she created a few coasters and bookmarks using the dried flowers.
"You better do that. Your husband ran a mile to get them."
Calix arched an eyebrow, pretending to look smug. Leslie burst out laughing, amused by his response.
"Oh? A mile? Nah... I don’t believe you..."
"Well, one-tenth of one mile?"
"Hahaha!"
The husband and wife shared some laughter between their jokes as they headed to the backyard.
Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An entertained Calliope, including Uncle Raymond who appeared out of nowhere. Once Calix and Leslie appeared, the three of them swiftly disappeared into the manor.
Calix, Leslie and Calliope spent some time together in the backyard. They admired the streaks of violet, amber and ruby dyeing the sunset sky. Before the sun completely set, they returned inside.
The evening went by smoothly even for the injured Leslie.
Mrs. Su arrived after sunset, replacing Mrs. An. Learning of Leslie’s injuries, the private nurse immediately examined them.
"They’re superficial wounds. Still, you need to be careful when moving, Mrs. Xu."
Mrs. Su’s words helped to appease Calix’s concern. Because of Leslie’s weak physical, he was afraid these injuries would set her back from her current progress.
Mrs. Su assisted Leslie when the latter took a bath. Calix went to shower before dinner while Calliope suddenly wanted to read a storybook with Mimo.
The husband and wife let their daughter be. They knew the little dumpling was fond of bathing after having dinner most of the time.
The family of three gathered in the dining room before eight. Mouth-watering dishes were already served on the table by Aunt Wendy.
During dinner, Calliope asked to sleep together in her mother’s bedroom, a request easily granted by Leslie.
"Papa, sleep with Poppy and Mama?"
Calliope shifted her eyes from Leslie to Calix once she received her mother’s approval. She left her favorite chicken wings unattended for a while.
"Alright," Calix nodded, showing no other thoughts on his face, "Poppy, shower after dinner, en?"
"Okay~"
The happy little dumpling continued eating her chicken wings. She didn’t notice her mama and papa exchanging words in a lower tone.
"Do you have work left? It’s fine if... you’re busy..."
Leslie knew sometimes Calix worked until past midnight, either completing some urgent tasks or having a conference call from abroad.
Now that he resumed working after one week of break, she couldn’t help but think he would be swamped with work.
"I’ll put you and Poppy to sleep first," replied Calix with a smirk. He picked Leslie’s favorite stir-fried kale with salted fish, "I’m a good husband and dad, no?"
Leslie stifled her laughter. Nodding, she earnestly said, "You are..."
Calix’s smile softened further. Beneath his smile, his mind was thinking of something else.
’Will I dream of them again if I sleep with Leslie and Poppy?’
The question sounded absurd but, Calix still hoped to know the answer to his nonsensical theory. After all, he had gone through several uncanny experiences until now.
Calliope took a bath in her bedroom, allowing Calix to tell Leslie about Evelyn visiting his office. He also showed her the information about Chase Yao.
The husband and wife simply sat on the bench by the window in their daughter’s room.
"I hope Eve will be on guard... around this man from now... Oh, does Miss Duan always come... to visit him?"
Leslie didn’t expect this was the backstory behind Evelyn and Chase’s secret romance. She carefully read everything before saying her piece to Calix.
"Around twice a year I believe," Calix shrugged, not sure about the information, "Sooner or later, Eve has to accept the truth."
’Even if it hurts.’
Leslie said nothing anymore, agreeing with Calix. She knew Evelyn was already being cheated on by Chase. Their relationship had been a lie from the start.
The younger lady just hadn’t known the truth – until now.
