Chapter 342: The Little One’s Snotty Crying Face
Soon, CEO Xu learned the reason behind his little daughter’s snotty crying face.
Chuckling, Leslie waved at Calix to come closer. As the confused man did as he was told, she whispered the entire story into his right ear.
"I wanted to walk to the couch when... Poppy cheered and jumped around me... She tripped on her foot so I tried to... catch her..."
Leslie stopped the wheelchair quite a distance away from the couch. She wanted to practice her walking after seeing the satisfactory result during her rehab today.
As Leslie took slow steps, the happy Calliope clapped her small hands and hopped around her mother. The little one eagerly expressed her encouragement.
Unfortunately, Calliope stumbled. A panicked Leslie quickly grabbed the little one, exerting her body beyond her current physical ability.
Calliope didn’t get hurt even the slightest but, Leslie got bruised on the right calf as she tried to shield the little one.
"How’s your calf?"
Calix whispered back to Leslie once he understood what made Calliope upset. The little dumpling felt bad for the slight injury her mother got from saving her.
"I’m alright. It’ll be gone in two days, I think... Just on the surface..."
"I don’t think it’ll take two days to heal."
Calix smiled in helplessness. He wanted to check Leslie’s leg but, he better comforted the crying mess of a dumpling. Calliope continued to bury her face on the lady’s lap. Her small body trembled in sadness.
"Poppy~ Papa has a gift for Poppy and Mama."
Sitting on the couch, Calix put his hands under Calliope’s armpits before picking her up. He settled the sad little munchkin on his lap.
"Sob... a gift?"
Calliope rubbed her teary swollen eyes. A smiling Leslie passed some tissues to Calix, letting him wipe their daughter’s wet face.
Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An retreated from the lounge, leaving the family of three alone. The former didn’t forget to get three mugs of plain water before she vanished into the kitchen.
"Yes, a gift," Calix reiterated. Taking the tissues from Leslie, he started wiping Calliope’s cheeks before pinching her round nose, "Blow your nose. Papa will give it to Poppy after Poppy drinks some water, en?"
Calliope did as she was told. Her tiny heart was still hurting from causing her mama’s injury. Even the mention of getting a gift didn’t cheer the little dumpling.
"Here! Pink for Poppy and red for Mama~"
Calix presented the bouquet to Calliope first before handing the other to Leslie.
"...flowers?"
Calliope blinked. She stared at the pink roses through her blurry eyes, her favorite color. She also saw the small box nestled in the wrapper.
"Papa is so thoughtful..." Leslie smiled sweetly at Calix, thanking him for the gesture. She dipped her nose into the bouquet, taking in the scent of the roses, "Smells so good... Poppy, try it..."
Calliope rubbed her eyes again before smelling the roses. The sweet scent managed to draw a smile on her lips. Her gloomy countenance regained a little joy.
"Sweet roses... En..."
Looking at the pink roses sprung an idea in Calliope’s little mind. She grabbed the bouquet with both hands before turning to her mother.
Under Calix and Leslie’s amused eyes, Calliope gave the pink roses to the lady.
"Mama, Poppy is sorry... For Mama..."
"Hehe, thank you for the thought but... Papa got them for Poppy..." Leslie laughed softly, tracing one thumb under Calliope’s right eye, "Mama got flowers too... What should we tell Papa?"
Calliope stared at Leslie a moment longer, letting her mama’s words sink into her mind. Calix chuckled as he watched the mother and daughter looking at each other.
"Open the boxes too. You two will like them."
Leslie picked up the small box from her bouquet. Raising her brows, she guessed, "Are there chocolates inside?"
"Yes!"
Calliope perked up at the mention of chocolate. Peeling her small eyes away from Leslie, she took the box from the pink roses bouquet.
"Oh! Chocolates!"
Calliope exclaimed as soon as Calix opened the lid of the box. He tossed the ribbon on the coffee table. The little one’s reaction gained a smile from her parents.
"The chocolates are adorable... Hehe, reminds me of the ones... your papa got me before..."
Leslie’s words earned a chuckle from Calix. He recalled the time they were in Rome a few months back. He bought her some chocolate on the first night of their trip[01].
"Poppy, can Poppy go and play with Aunt Wendy?" Calix softened his voice as he caressed Calliope’s head, "Papa will bring Mama upstairs, en?"
"My darling is a good girl..." Leslie kissed one side of Calliope’s head. Smiling, she crooned, "Let’s play together... soon, en? Mama needs to go... to the toilet ah..."
Calliope nodded. Her parents’ constant reassurance helped to lessen the guilt tugging at her small heart.
"Okay. Poppy go and play with Granny Wendy."
Seeing Calliope’s mood improve relieved Calix and Leslie. The man called for Aunt Wendy. The housekeeper swiftly appeared
"Aunt Wendy, please look after Poppy for a while," Calix gestured at Leslie with his eyes, "I’ll take Leslie upstairs."
"Alright, Mr. Calix," Aunt Wendy understood what Calix meant. She approached the couch, smiling at Calliope, "Come, Miss Poppy. We have fresh strawberries in the kitchen. How about eating them in the backyard?"
"Okay~"
Calliope slid down from Calix’s lap. She looked at her parents while holding the flower bouquet and the chocolate box.
"Go, Poppy," Leslie waved one hand, urging the little one to follow Aunt Wendy, "Mama and Papa will go... there soon..."
Calix nodded, showing he agreed with Leslie. Finally, the little dumpling deng deng deng walked by Aunt Wendy’s side, heading to the kitchen.
"Show me your foot," said Calix as soon as Calliope and Aunt Wendy disappeared from the lounge, "How bad is it?"
"Just a little..." Leslie stifled her laughter.
"Better to be safe."
Calix carefully elevated Leslie’s left foot and placed it on his lap, afraid of causing her more pain. His brows furrowed at the sight of her bruised calf.
